Also WOODPECKERS. those are some crazy weird birds that I think look really cool. With most media coming from America or Europe, you grow up with a set of cultural traits and regional animals that you feel like you should consider normal and mundane because of how everyone on tv treats them, but really seem rare and special because they don’t even exist where you live. Like you can go walking in the woods and get attacked by a bear or mountain lion or rabid animal or god forbid a MOOSE? America has some really scary animals.

I grew up in So Cal and my dad loved tortoises. For about 8 years we owned a young female galapagos (with permit of course). She was such a sweetheart and my dad was a very knowledgeable tortoise owner and would go down to the tortoise clubs xD. We were going to keep her forever but he met another man who lived in Nor Cal who had a bit of a ranch for galapagos and was trying to breed them for conservation. Our young female (like already 18 years, but breeding can be as old as 30 depending on the individual) was really just coming into her breeding age and over long discussions we decided to give her to him. She'd be with other galapagos and have the best chance for conservation breeding. A very good girl and tortoises are amazing. They have a lot of soft personality. We've also had salcatas which are also big tortoises and those guys are little rammers. Always ramming into shit and doors. Our galapagos girl was such a polite and gentle tortoise though. Great childhood memories.

Would love to see Connor's reaction to seeing fairy wrens. They're basically winged mice and the males are fabulously bright blue (there is one oddball species that's red and black). They are also an urban species. I have spotted them de-bugging my plants on the balcony, super cute. And side note, the noisy minor, the random bird you were gushing over can swoop in nesting season. Not as bad as magpies. But it just proves that it's an Australian bird.

Used to volunteer here many moons ago and was a demonstrator for the Galapagos tortoise. I took him out of the enclosure one day for his usual walk and as i was feeding him and dealing with the kids annoying him i was distracted and he bit down on my left finger. Tried to put my right finger in to try and pull the mouth open with which he just bit down harder and realising he was gonna bite through i ripped them out taking my left fingernail with it. Then the doctors weren't any better as they had to scrub the injury as it had the food and shit that the tortoise had been eating within the wound. Fun day.
