The drive wasn't meant for in-system use, only interplanetary. It uses ion drives to get far enough out of the sun's gravity well. Sam Neil's character did a great job explaining how space folds work in the beginning with the magazine page. And, importantly, poking a hole through the paper. There's your Warp. And Lawrence Fishburne's Capt. Miller is a rare breed in horror movies - someone with sense: "I have no intention of leaving her, Doctor. I will take the Lewis and Clark to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the Event Horizon until I'm satisfied she's vaporized. Fuck this ship!" Your usual horror movie captain would be like, "Sure, it's been to hell and is trying to flay us and play the Happy Snake Game with our intestines, but I still want to stick my tongue to its Lament Configuration Drive's housing."

Way off topic: but _black holes and huge ships with a lot of exposed superstructure…?_ Maybe add the *U.S.S Cygnus* from (Disney's) *The Black Hole* to your to do list [at least the film and the ship have different names]. It's a wonderfully baroque and totally impractical ship that seemed to be made in tribute to ornate train stations and crystal palaces. The other ships in the film can be done as an aside, but really that ship is art - *delicate* art _in space …_ And the best part is since The Black Hole was _a kids film by Disney,_ you don't have to slap a rating warning on it as you discuss a ship going into a black hole where there's a literal representation of hell - and where a homicidal robot with power tools for arms that it used to drill through the guts of Anthony Perkins, somehow became a composite being with its creator (a megalomaniac who _lobotomized his whole crew_ and turned them into servitor drones) and together they become the Devil and oversee the damned. It was perfectly appropriate for a eight year old to see in the cinema, although I was upset about B.O.B.

I think it was a David Weber book that had black holes as a drive system, which I think seemed well done. The system worked by essentially having the controlled black hole "pull" the ship in the desired direction. It also worked as essentially a shield cause it would basically absorb whatever would cross its event horizon. There may have been a gravity well limitation of some sort a bit fuzzy on that bit.

Well, the black hole butt probably couldn't be smaller due to all the necessary equipment, that needed engines with enough of trust, those needing power source with enough of output and not knowing if it's gonna work could easily led to situation, when you have this experimental, complex and awfully expensive system on the edge of solar system and no one to check out why it does nothing. Or replace the fuses. Sure, you could send another ship altogether with this one, carrying necessary technicians, but it's easier and cheaper to put them directly on the experimental ship. Given the Gothic architecture and the cathedral-like design of the Event Horizon, Doctor Weir had to have some kind of fore-shadowed knowledge as to how the ship would end up. The only re-decorating that got done was all the bodily fluids, after all.

Fun fact about black holes; they aren’t as immortal as we think they are. Black holes evaporate. Through a mechanism called Hawking radiation. Simplified version is that quantum level shit happens near the event horizon, and normally particles will materialize and immediately annihilate, like if you did 0 +1 -1 on a calculator. Stuff happened but nothing changed. But at the event horizon, one of these particles will get pulled in, and the other will go free, meaning that the black hole looses a minuscule amount of mass every time this happens. It happens faster for small black holes because their surface area as a proportion of their mass is way higher, which might accidentally explain why the black holes in the 2009 Star Trek didn’t keep growing, they evaporated due to their inherently artificial and probably unstable nature.

There is a potentially accidental nod to other things in this movie. Such as the UAC (from Doom, which is also an aerospace company) and some other stuff. Also, if you haven't you should check out the ship in Pandorum (also arguably a sequel in the same universe as this made by the same people) As well the Cygnus from the Black Hole is a nice albeit creepy ship. Haha

Tidal forces are not that big outside of the event horizon, especially far from it. Remember that this thing's black hole must have had a mass of tons at best, meaning its gravitational field outside of its event horizon would be negligible. For some reason people think that black holes somehow 'gain' more gravitational power when they collapse, but this is not the case - a black hole the mass of earth would have -exactly- earth's gravitational field - and it doesnt rip anybody. And EH's BH must have been orders of magnitude weaker.

@@empireempire3545: I am aware of how gravity works. For a black hole to be capable of doing anything useful in terms of bending spacetime on a scale that would matter to a starship, it would need to have a macroscopic event horizon. A black hole that weighs a few tons would have an event horizon about the size of a proton, and would be useless for anything other than confusing your bathroom scale momentarily as the black hole fell straight through your body without touching a single atom within it. Furthermore, the movie shows one of the rescue crew _reaching into the event horizon,_ which blows away any arguments about tidal effects being insignificant at a reasonable distance.

I finally watched this movie because of your review. What a disappointing movie. They had a ship powered by a tiny black hole that could travel to a dimension of chaos, and the best they could come up with was too many cheap jump-scares, scary-looking disfigured people, and a silly amount of fake blood? Basically it was a haunted house in space, based on the premise that if the unknown is scary, it must definitely be malevolent. What a complete waste of whatever budget that movie had.

I have designed a ship. That is your job, Jeremy. The problem is that you are a sadist who likes watching people burn. This one is different. This one is powered by a black hole! Powered by? How? ...um...because they are very powerful? Yes they are but...okay, so you have a ship with artifical gravity and materials so strong that it can capture a black hole... No, this is this species' first spaceship. ...oh god. Keep going. A lot of people can be crammed on this one. It's huge, long and easily broken in two. Right. What do they want this for, anyway? To get around the solar system. Bit overkill, I guess, but they seem fairly stupid, since they came to us. Nobody else can make FTL ships. For obvious reasons. What happens when they turn it on? The ship explodes and vanishes. Then it gets spit out again, having gone through the hell dimension. I made allowances for this however, and made the ship very easy to be possessed.

I think there's an opportunity here for a discussion about how to design the interior of vessels that people will be living in for extended/unknown periods of time. Especially when wealth/technology/resources allow a lot of freedom, like in ST: NG (Beige! Everything should be beige!). I'm pretty sure that if you want any kind of psychological health in your crew, you shouldn't have your vessel interior look like a 𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘦.
