Man, that was a rough 2 weeks! Good news is I believe I should be all good to go minus the embarrassingly small tires I am running at the moment. I hope that I can finally get back out in the backcountry for some real flying!

Don't be apologetic about the videos while your plane is down. Most people that watch these videos want the aircraft owner's experience. Maintenance and repair is part of that, especially bush planes. Your videos add a level of realism when we see that it's not all edited fun stuff. Keep up the great work!

Trent, I really respect the way you "manned up" re: the prop strike. I had you figured for a stand up guy, I'm glad to see that I was right about you. Years ago, I worked for a mechanical engineer who had a favorite saying. "TreeTop", he would say, "problems are nothing more than opportunities". This video is a perfect example of that saying. IMO, your airplane still looks like a boss with those stock 8:00 inch tires. Semper Fi, TreeTop

Greetings from rural NE Calif., here. I don't fly but several of us in my family really like aviation. I had a young cousin who was a private pilot, but it was a horse that killed her. Go figure. I "discovered" STOL aircraft on KZfaq. So I have subscribed. I like vids with reports like this as well as actual flying. I like theory, clever ideas, and manning up, which you did. I appreciate explanations about Experimentals too. Oh, also, no bad language in the vid. Thanks. I look forward to more time with you and your plane. Hope your tires come in soon.

Genuinely one of my favourite videos you've made. It tells a great story but also shows some interesting flying. there's just something so funny to me that you can just land the plane 90° off the intended direction and roll off to th3 taxiway at slower speeds than some planes taxi normaly. Also very cool to see a Bonanza land off airport. Great work Trent.

I just recently got my tailwheel endorsement. Finished in a super decathlon. I have flown a super cub and a dehaviland chipmunk. The forward visibility on the decathlon is amazing. No zig zag required. I'll be purchasing a share of an aeronca champ soon. Hoping it has similar forward vis as the decathlon. If not I'll learn a lesson from this video. Read these notams carefully. I bought my 1978 T tail Lance and flew for 19 years. Only had one problem with a connector for the auto pilot that had to be replaced. No other problems, Great Plane. It was rated for 7 as it had a kiddie seat that I could put in the isle in the middle seat area for another passenger. The most I flew with was 6 passengers to New York, Kennedy Airport. I was at hold at the runway facing a Hugh Jumbo jet about 39 stories above me waiting for my turn to take off. I was flying instrument out to Stewart FBO a joint military airport with tail hook cables across the runway for Navy pilots to practice. I had to land long to miss the cables as it would have wrecked my landing gear. No problem, we had lunch at the airport cafeteria and flew back to Richmond, VA. I only flew a few uncrotled FBOs, mostly flew to class A and B airports. In the mountains of Colorado I rented a plane and my wife and I flew off a one way runway. Cliff at one end and mountains on the other, uphill to the mountains. I met a bush pilot that used his driveway as his private runway. Nice guy. I had a lot of fun. There was too much to remember when getting my Private license so I prayed to God to help me and I could remember everything and got my pilots license in 6 weeks (only 3 weeks of study). Later I had the same trouble with the Instrument rating. I prayed for help and God helped me remember everything and gave me good orientation in the clouds. I am a Christian and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which is the Restored Church of Jesus Christ, previously a Baptist minister. I know Jesus is the Christ and He will help you if you do what is right and ask Him. He saved my life several times with a vision of an upcoming accident and how to avoid it. It is True. God bless you brothers, take God with you.

Dang, that sucks man... Good on ya for not blaming the construction company! TBH, I probably would have... I mean, sure you have to be attentive out in the bush, but most aren't expecting to encounter obstacles on airport taxiways, so it's kind of understandable that you wouldn't be looking... Again though, I respect you for owning it. Brilliant mods BTW!

I kinda agree with you it's at least 50/50 because yeah he should have been looking but pilots already have enough stuff to worry about and anyone leaving or forgetting anything on an active run way without notifying all the pilots is pretty reckless. Glad that nobody was hurt and Trent definitely took the high road on this one because I guarantee there are people that would probably sue over this. So good on him for not making anyone potentially lose their job over this because we all make dumb mistakes sometimes. I hope his sponsors helped him out. Plus I noticed in my personal experience that letting someone slide usually comes back in a good way by people randomly letting me catch a break when I needed it the most even though that part was unbeknownst to them.

I like your innovative cam installation for seeing down in front of you. 41 years ago a bi-plane came down on top of our C172 at about 200' AGL, both planes attempting to land. tried it a couple times too.. what amazes me is that when you crash a mile away you can hear the impact and how it rew up from all the fuel getting forced tru in a sec when the fueltank is geting flattened.. only thing surviving this crash was the elevators and 2 of the wheels.. rest was totally destroyed..not even a single part of the engine survived.. well maybe the glowplug worked but it got trashed with the rest. it decided to "land" in a pile of rocks a farmer had removed from his fields.

Don't understand the prop strike. I soloed in a Cub at age 16* and we were taught to weave back and forth while taxing because we couldn't see over the gas tank, especially from the back seat, the solo position. *Well, that was 70 years ago so maybe things have changed since then. Just to expand that a bit, I took lessons from Burrell Tibbs and Cal Appleby. Look up Tibbs and you will see some comments posted by me. Tibbs hired Wiley Post and taught him to fly in the long-ago. www.earlyaviators.com/etibbs.htm

Too many people in this world refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and are always looking to place the blame for what they have done on someone else. So I think that your "Manning Up" and taking responsibility for the tripod says more for your character than anything else could. I think you are correct in saying that the tripod should have been better marked, or, from my point of view, perhaps even should not have been where it was at all. But I've got to tell you that I truthfully truly admire the position that you have taken, in taking responsibility for the tripod and not harassing the company that owns it. I think you have a right to be proud of yourself, and I think you deserve to hear that from other people.

Man, I hope the luck gets better! I think the thing I loved most about not owning the shop was that I wasn't the person who had to tell the aircraft owner how much it would cost to fix everything. I did eat the cost of parts on one repair, but it was fun to keep the receipt so I could prove that there was a part with all paperwork, that you could buy for less than $1. If it makes you feel any better, the corporate flight dept I worked for had to spend $95/nut for an overhaul on one of our Hawkers.

Hi Trent, I too am a fan. I have just started with KZfaq videos of my RV-12 adventures and am attempting to emulate your level of professionalism. Back in the 80s I had a prop strike in a Piper Cheyenne on the Boise ID Forest Service ramp in the dark of the night. I hit a metal milk carton of all things with the right prop. Because I was taxiing for take off with the intention of flight, it was counted as an accident on my permanent records. My bad. Thanks again for the great entertainment. Oh, my RV-12 has itty bitty tires. I can taxi over grass if it isn't cut too high. :)

Hi Trent. I just learned to keep the S-Turns going even when I think the taxi-way is clear. I'm a 20% owner of a Piper Cub still working on my tail dragger log entry. I have 5 logged takeoff and landings and the insurance company wants 8 more dual hours before I get to fly by myself. I don't think I'll be installing a video monitor even though our Cub does have a battery and electric starting. I truly love the Kit Fox but am much too old to consider building something. Your "little tires" are what cub owners call the "big tires" 8". I can relate to the towered airport thing. about 97% of my 280 hours in tricycle gear aircraft have been in Class E airspace. We have a Class-D airport near us and a Class-C a little further away. The Class D used to be more friendly but had less traffic. Now the contract controllers at the Class D seem to be doing a screen-test for FAA employment. Our Cub has a metal prop. A prop strike would be pretty expensive for us so I think I'll have to keep up my S-Turn taxing. I enjoyed the video. I uploaded one on my main channel yesterday and only have around 600 views. You upload a video and have more than 14K views. Your my hero.

Man, maintenance is really the huge downside of aircraft ownership (good thing the upside is soo cool). I love that after you crashed you didn't just get everything fixed again but also went pro-active and installed those windows, and the backup cam : so cool! Love your videos!

Cool idea with the forward-looking camera. I was thinking you could mount a mirror at a 45-degree angle overhead (where the windshield meets the top of the cabin) to get a peek forward, but the cam must work much better.

Great job on getting her flying again! Maybe you could put an ND filter over the front facing camera to get rid of the rolling shutter effect.

Sorry to hear about all the crap that hit you Trent but loved the video and thanks for keeping us up to date. To be honest, if it were me I'd edit out the "my fault" part and ding them for the prop. They should have their equipment better marked, I'm sure you're not the only tail dragger around and if you hadn't have hit it some else would have. I'm not a pilot but have worked construction jobs at small airports and know how equipment and work areas have to be marked. If that were my work here I would have been fined and would have to pay for repairs. Thank God you didn't fling something into another plane or worse...... person. Keep the videos coming and as always...... *Dance the Skies*

It's rather common knowledge with a tail dragger that visibility over the cowl is non existent. SOP is to zig zag left and right while taxiing down the runway, for visibility purposes. See how a P-51 taxis down a runway, sometime. That's how we did it during WWII

Trent: I came across this video by chance, thought the video looked interesting, so I watched it and then, impressed by your attitude, commented on it below. Live your life the way I speak of below, and you'll wind up at the end of your life with nothing but a tremendous pile of regrets. But you have obviously chosen to make the moral choice and live your life the way you should, by doing the RIGHT thing in ALL circumstances ... so I believe you'll avoid that. Congratulations on being one of those that are part of the solution and not part of the problem... One of those that makes a contribution to society and not one of those that preys on it. You're a rare type.

Dang, sorry man. I had a prop strike also. Airport was mowing the runway and moved a runway side marker onto the grass runway. I will giving someone dual instruction and wasn't fully paying attention. fortunately for the damage was minimal. I know how you feel.

The term is a retread. I think they would be the perfect answer to guys who spend a lot of time on rough surfaces. Of course, the particular retread vs longevity vs price will provide the final answer.
