I'm assuming it was like many of the videos, where they're off in the distance, and from our perspective, we don't know what you are shooting at. Possibly there was a lot of that, but possibly you also weren't sure, because the enemy were far enough away, that it's hard to tell anything other than people are shooting at you. I can't imagine what it's like to have a bullet buzz by my area, or ear. Glad you made it home safe.

First time someone shot at me was in Mississippi... Some grumpy farmer didn't like me exploring the woods. I guess they must have belonged to him, because there was no warning other than the near misses. He was so far off it took me a while of staring at him, and wondering what I was hearing before I realized what was happening. Executed my first and finest combat role straight into a washout ditch, and promptly conducted my first "tactical retreat". He pursued me and another teenager for a while, and we hid under some forest matting until he left the area. May have even beaten some speed records on the way out for all I know. 😅 Ironically, I was grateful later on when I deployed to Iraq, because I thought he missed me intentionally and he may have saved my life by allowing me to learn some combat awareness before my life was actually on the line (such as the sound made by passing bullets that are near vs those so close the snap loudly as they pass by).

Either kamikaze or dishonour your family’s name forever. Japanese soldiers were drilled into their minds that to be taken prisoner was worse than death in the eyes of the emperor. Many Japanese soldiers went to war with the mindset that it was either death or eternal punishment in life and the afterlife. Pretty fucked up but insanely dedicated to the cause. They didn’t fear death, that’s what made the pacific theatre so different to any other battlefield during WWII.

My father was in the Pacific, but he didn't have to shoot anyone, but they did hand him a surrendered last ditch Arisaka type 99 with the chrysanthemum ground off, when his ship reached China for the occupation and getting the Japanese out of there. You sir have seen things that no one should have to see. Thank you for your service.

America dropped bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and killed millions of innocent people as well. It's the war that's bad. Not all japanese were bad people (like my great grandpa kazuyoshi 和義) but i understand your grandpa's feeling. RIP for your grandpa.
