Although it’s a fun lil nod to their relationship in the novel it was based on, Emma by Jane Austen from 1815. Emma’s (aka Cher) sister was married to Mr Knightley’s (aka Josh) brother. They took the word family-in-law much more seriously back then, so Emma would have considered Mr Knightley’s brother as her brother, and Mr Knightley would have considered Emma’s sister as his sister. That makes their relationship the sort of sibling-adjacent-but-not-really that ex step siblings does a good job of conveying in a more modern context. To say that Josh was just a family friend wouldn’t quite have cut it.

My take on the step sibling thing: it’s not nearly as weird as people make it out to be. Her dad and his mum were married for less than a year, several years ago, so Cher and Josh would have seen each other as friends much more than siblings. And anyone who thinks it’s “creepy” or “grooming” for an 18/19-year-old to date a 16/17-year-old needs a reality check. There’s a reason most countries have Romeo and Juliet laws-it would be unreasonable to say that someone who just turned 18 couldn’t date someone a couple of years younger than them. If you want to react to a period romcom, they recently did an adaption of the novel that this was based on, Emma by Jane Austen. Emma from 2020 is great, and since it’s based on the same source material, there are a lots of fun parallels :)

As Gen Z, this movie still holds. Just a few tweaks with technology and some plot points, it would still be cool. Also, can we talk about the fashion which is still relevant. Also, this movie predicted we’d be addicted to our phones 😂
@ilanakarp
@ilanakarp 2 жыл бұрын
This movie didn’t predict we would be addicted to our phones, we were addicted to our phones in 1995 lol. My senior year I got my first cell phone and we were all addicted, my parents had car phones before then but being able to take our phone with us everywhere was amazing, we no longer needed our pagers. I graduated high school in 1995.

The whole "is this incest?" thing is up for debate I guess, personally I find the entire romance plot to be uncomfortable, but regardless of the familiarity aspect, Josh is also 18-19 in this. He counts as one of the college aged boys they talk about. Cher is only 16, and I think a lot of people overlook the fact that Josh is an *adult* in this because it's Paul Rudd. Cher having a one sided crush would be one thing, but the second he didn't shut it down, it became a problem. The ball was in his count and he didn't do his due diligence as the adult in that situation to put a line down n seperate himself from the environment and *not* kiss the *underage* girl.

But then again you would say the same with a 17 year old and a 18 year old. They only have 2 years of separation wich isn’t much. So i personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
@LadyGreensleeves33
@LadyGreensleeves33 2 жыл бұрын
I've never seen like two years of separation as a big deal at all. Like they are both teenagers, regardless. Maybe it's weirder now, but in the 90s and early 2000s it was very common, even expected for girls to try the date up a bit, by a year or two. Ergo Cher's whole "ew high school boys" thing. Most states have laws that make it not a legal issue if they're close in age.
@sudsysoap
@sudsysoap 2 жыл бұрын
it isn't really incest since they aren't blood related, they have only been step siblings for a very short time like around 6 months only I think? and they didn't grow up together and they don't live together either. it is weird but it shouldn't really be considered incest unless they are either blood related or they grew up together and considered each other as siblings. I agree tho the actual "problem" is the age difference so I agree on that part. it doesn't matter if she took the first step or if she liked him first, cause he is older and should have known better

I was a teen when this movie came out. Loved it then, love it now. They were step-siblings for a brief time, the implication was less than a year but because he was already heading to college to be a lawyer, keeping touch would help his career and the dad/step-dad saw he was a good kid and wanted to help. So they met as older kids, lived together for some months, and then the parents split so they never really formed a familial bond. Definitely not incest literally (they are not related) nor figuratively/in the spirit (they were not raised together as siblings). This was before step-porn was "mainstream", so wasn't trying to bank off that, either. Brown-noser = ass-kisser (got brown on your nose) Space-cadet= head in the clouds/spacy/airhead Vegging out= slang from "vegetable" so being a potato, which is what I call it now, or "couch potato"/sitting around watching TV. Yes, you should see Forest Gump, so I'll have to see if you got to it after this.
