I have the best Emmylou story. I ran into her at a 7/11 in West LA in 2000. (Her daughter was going to college and living in the area). We walk into the store at the same time so I opened the door. She walks by and I recognize her. I head up an aisle looking for something. Next thing I know she's standing next to me. I tell I know who she is and we start talking. I then tell her that I was just on the internet reading stories about Gram Parsons. (which I was) She says, "oh, I don't like the internet." I immediately go into proselytizing about the internet and said, "don't be a Luddite. The internet is going to change the world." She starts laughing. She then says she's in town to play a benefit concert in a couple of days for Fred Walecki of Westwood Music. I tell her I was going to the show as a guest of David Crosby and that I would see her there. Now, this was an amazing show. A night of a thousand stars - Croz/Nash, Zevon, Henley, Jackson Emmylou & Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder and many more. So, the show is over and I'm backstage surrounded by my musical heroes, when Emmylou walks in the room. She looks around the room and sees me. She immediately starts screaming my name as she moves across the room - VICTOR!!! The room stops. She runs across the room and gives me a big hug. While she's hugging me she whispers in my ear, "Do you know how I remembered your name?" I was like, "Uh, yeah?" She started laughing and said, "You're the only other person besides Linda to call me a Luddite." It was a moment and it was awesome. What a sweetheart.

Oh my! I know Fred Walecki . I always went to his store to hang out and play with his great selection of guitars, I purchased several from him and he always took care of my guitars. He Became a friend to me. I was at that very concert, ha! Still have the T-Shirt. And a live taping of it done by an friend. I also met Emmylou at the Sunset Tower Record store, she was performing a free live concert of her Wrecking Ball cd. I sat on floor in front of her, amazing band and music. Later she signed her CDs, and was so very nice to meet. I also saw her and this band play live at a festival up near Yosemite.

First time I ever saw Emmylou was in Greenwich Village when I was in high school (around 65) although I had no idea who she was at the time. I met her late 68 or early '69 at a bar in Norfolk VA - purely by coincidence . I was a Navy Aircrewman ferrying a rebuilt T-28 aircraft from Pensacola to NAS Norfolk. We were on a "remain-overnight" and I took a liberty bus down Hampton Blvd into Ghent to get something to eat - a girl about my age was playing at a little bar & grille on Colley Ave . I think it was either what's now called The Onion, or the place across the street from it. Ironically, over the past 30 years I have probably played a dozen gigs between the two of them. She had such a beautiful voice, and when she took a break, I told her she sounded like a girl I had heard in Greenwich Village when I was a budding high school folk performer in the 60s. She said she had played in a lot of clubs in GV, then kept on walking. Don't know - I may have been staring a bit too intently... I still had no idea who she was, but it wasn't long before she shot to fame with Parsons, her name and picture showed up on an album. and I knew exactly who she was.

Emmylou has been in my collection since 1976. Her band was indeed a list of stellar musicians. Interesting she mentions using those guitars for a slide. I have been Facebook friends with him for a decade or so. Loved BR5-49. Lord willing some day I'm gonna make the trip and check the museum out and say hi to Jay. Hope to get to meet you as well. I understand if you are busy with one of the awesome videos. Time passes and takes it's toll on all of us. It is good to get as many of these stories preserved as possible.

My hubby introduced me to Emmylou Harris when we began dating in 1977. My hubby, Jimmy has to be one of her biggest fans. When she performed at the Music Mill at Six Flags Over Texas, we chose our seats in the Texas heat with no shade, and stayed there for both shows (the power went out during one show). We were unable to see her again until a year ago, when she performed in Austin at the Paramount. She is still a wonderful performer, and we are so excited to be able to see her in Nashville at the Ryman, along with Rodney Crowell, in January. We traveled to New Braunfels to see Rodney Crowell within the past year, also. Retirement has its benefits! We will see you soon, Rodney and Emmylou! 😎

I don't know if you remember but when Emmylou Harris did an album with Mark many years ago the two were guest on The Don Imus Radio Show. I watched the interview on MSNBC many years ago. How fond is Emmylou Harris of Levon Helm? Also who should play Levon Helm in a movie about his life?
@Teachering
@Teachering 3 жыл бұрын
@@chaddawkins8525 I like your comment, Chad Dawkins, though I have never been a fan of Don Imus. I've listened to him but have generally kept my distance. As to Levon Helm, your question takes me by surprise. I am a Canadian living in Southern Ontario geographically close to where members of The Band: Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Levon Helm often moved about in the past. Of course, they were Ronnie Hawkins' band for some time in the Toronto area. You can visit Richard Manuel's grave in Stratford, ON. Rick Danko actually lived in my home town for a while. I understand Robbie Robertson has family in or near the Six Nations Indian Reserve near Brantford, ON. As to someone taking the role of Levon Helm in a movie about his life - personally, I prefer that Hollywood leave him alone and not taint his name and history. I've always enjoyed Levon Helm's musicianship. That voice! The way he sat behind his kit. He was unique. Funny, when I think back on my life The Band's music seems to have been pivotal. Their memory triggers the memory of old friends and acquaintances now relegated to my past. I'm sorry I was not able to answer your question as you perhaps would have liked, Chad Dawkins, but I am glad that you sent a comment my way. I'll bet you can tell that I'm an old guy.

Great interview of this incredible artist. I first saw her while watching David Frost show in 1970 as a folk singer. She was seven months pregnant with her first daughter. What an incredible journey after that !! Looking forward for the second part.

Really enjoyed This interview and how candid Emmy Lou is in it. I was a hot band fan when I was young, and Emmy Lou was amazing then. Later on I discovered GP and all the connections. I’ve been enchanted with all of it for 40 plus years, this music and the scene around Emmy Lou for all This time has helped shaped my love for music. Boulder to Birmingham has always been a favorite and early on I knew what it was about. I love all kinds of music and Emmy Lous career has been so special for me. Thanks for the interview to all of you.

I live near Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. The 1932 painting Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was by artist Jo Mora, who lived in Carmel. He spoke at my school once. That album cover was of a very famous painting.

Beautiful interview, with insights we have never heard before. Thanks so much. I do wish you had asked about "Boulder to Birmingham". If that was the only song she wrote in her life, she is an absolute genius. That's a song that feels like it comes from every heart that has been broken by losing a loved one.

I was waiting in this episode for Emylou to talk about the reason or why she has always played Gibson guitars. It's 'cause her playing the Super Jumbo 200 in the 70's that I got into playing Gibson guitars. Open and candid her story. Once again you let the subject narrate their own tale. Thank you Joe!

What a gracious woman, beauty through and through -- was never exposed to country music growing up but I somehow heard (and bought) Pieces of the Sky when it came out when I was in high school and her voice was from some archetypal dimension that transcended musical genre -- Elite Hotel is still a masterpiece -- thank you for putting this on film ♥️

What a humble person she is stating she first learned 3 chords on that $30 Guitar and then saying that's about all she knows now ... very cautious to not toot her own horn ... very humble! What I'm saying is ... she definitely knows more than 3 chords now ... you can't have Albert Lee as your lead guitar player in your band ... and not know bar chords and power chords. Albert Lee for those that don't know of him in one of the top guitarist in Country music. He's in the league of players like Vince Gill , Chet Atkins , Roy Clark and many others. I'm sure she learned quite a bit from Albert Lee and the other guitarist she's had in her band ... and she is still a very Beautiful woman with a fantastic voice! 👍👍😎

Seems like most people talk about how "tough" the music biz is - how it chews you up and spits you out. Emmy is saying quite the opposite - that everything about the biz ended up helping her along the way. Either she is leaving out the bad bits or possibly there is some karma at work and you get back what you put in. Maybe she was treated so well because of how she is.

There are many great singers out there, but VERY few like Emmylou. She has such a beautiful voice that whenever I hear it, I freeze and just listen to the end. With her harmonies, she raises the songs of others to another level. Truly a national treasure. I hope she knows how much she lifts the spirits of people like me and millions of others. I wish nothing but the best for this special lady.
