@duo293 Well, then I guess you don't work in a shop enough to use something twice. I buy a 300$ tool and use it once, 2 years later im using it at work every day. Or someone asks me to fix something where I absolutely need that tool. Or a friend needs that tool..... It's a long life. You don't know what shop or line of work you'll be in in the future, but you very well may need that useless tool you bought 5 years ago and used once.

After reading the comments, let me just say that HF was founded by a father. He has since passed the company down to his son which is now the CEO. Tons of changes have been made to the company by his son. Both good and bad but mostly good. Quality of products have gone up, but one thing that stuck with me is that his father would refurbish and donate all exchanged and returned tools. Donate to the less fortunate, struggling vets etc. He was very patriotic. His son, unfortunately, stopped that and just resells the refurbished tools back at the stores for a discount as “refurbished” or “open box”. Tons of great changes have been made to the quality of product and also livable wages to their employees. It’s his son that is making HF a staple.

@NotABot88 yeah cause back in his day harbor freight was the staple for bad tools. The founder of HF passed and his son has taken it and turned that place around. Tons of made in USA tools, better quality of tools. It's not the same shop your daddy went too. In his day the only place to get quality was tool trucks, now it's not they're a dying business model with the internet purchases, and tool quality just going up in general.

As a younger mechanic, I mocked them and people that shopped there. Jokes on me cause while I was getting what I asked for on the Rape Truck, HF quietly sold tools that got the job done that regular people could afford. Im now a fleet tech and nearly ALL of my tools are from HF. Beat on daily and they have yet to let me down. Some I've had for almost 5 years now. And my wallet is happy that I've gotten value for my money. I love made in USA when I can afford it, but if youve never been on a tool truck and had a truck guy tell you with a straight face a set of metric shallow 3/8ths sockets 8-19mm is over $400... then you dont know what getting ripped off really feels like.

The brothers had to start with something. In the 90s many US tool and die companies were shuttering. All new prototypes were being mfg in China from junk zinc...and those factories could copy anything with crap metal. 1993 when the firmer Gov of Arkansas became President, the chinese junk started flooding WM shelves. Eventually the US tool factories restarted, and HF has been sourcing more and more stuff from them since 2020. China shot themselves in the foot by accidentally infecting their customers and shutting down supply lines.

It was only 15 years ago I bought a set of screwdrivers because I was in a situation where I was driving without any tools at all (wife kept taking them out because they made noise) and I needed some things to make repairs while on the road. The screw drivers bent, a tooth snapped on a phillips, the handles slipped. However, I bought a set just 5 years ago for a similar situation (just purchased a car that needed the plugs and Coil Packs). Two of the packs went out on the way home. Used the screwdrivers and pic tools without a single problem. I have used them ever since nearly once a week without an issue whatsoever. I have purchased several tools from them since then and have been nothing but pleased. HF has finally stepped up there game! No wonder new stores are popping up! HF CEO and Your Team! GOOD JOB!

Lately they’ve been heavily shifting towards their new product lines that aren’t cheap while phasing out the old stuff that they’re known for. I moved to Arizona, left my rollaway in the state I moved from but still needed to work. I went and bought their biggest service cart and FILLED it to the brim with their tools. Got damn if I don’t notice a single difference between the shit I bought off the tool truck still 1,400 miles away and the stuff I bought when I got here. It’s wild how far they’ve come.

It’s a common misconception that USA made products necessarily cost more- after shipping Chinese products halfway around the world, the gap in labor prices closes some, but what really determines the price is the profit margin assigned to the product. I was at Walmart a couple of years ago looking for a reasonably priced trash can for the kitchen. They were selling a Chinese trash can with a step lid for over $70. There is no way a similar product can’t be made right here for the same or even less money. Only difference is Walmart won’t be able to quadruple their money on it. If I’m gonna pay $70 I’d rather buy an American made trash can straight from the manufacturer and let them triple or quadruple their money. Enough of strengthening China and disemploying Americans !
@ForeignMinds
@ForeignMinds 2 ай бұрын
well it also depends on what manufacturing facility they get and where there parts are sourced and quality of labor china has more people who know how to use precision manufacturing tool then the usa by huge margin(so they have a lot of qualified labor) A lot of part on where there sourced can also depend on the product like a made in usa drill can have a made in china electric motor as it only require 25% of the product to be made in the usa to have that label and manufacturing facility have varying quality of labor and good example of good manufacturing resourcing is apple they make sure there is no child exploitation for there product they have usa quality checking facilities but there product is able to be cheap because of where they source it If they sourced there cobalt from somewhere else it would be super expensive Like hypothetically if apple made a iphone where everything was sourced in usa manufactured in usa from american labor it would cost upwards to probably 10 grand as the labor for the silicon cobalt lithium, and etc. The pricing of the tool needed would be a lot would be a lot the labor for manufacturing would be a lot

Ive been working construction for 25 years now under my contractor as an apprentice... I don't think there is anything wrong with harbor freight. You buy stuff using an account and get double the return time. And unlike many chains being unsatisfied is reason enough for a valid return. Their floor jacks and more expensive welders are pretty good and most hand tools I've kept quite a while. Pittsburgh used to be a top brand... I found my Pittsburgh Framing hammer from harbor freight looks amd performs almost exactly as my brothers 400$ specialty one... JS.

I bought their $40 electric chainsaw to cut a tree up after it fell on my car during a storm. About half way thru, the chain did fall off but that was my angle and rush. I slowed down and stopped trying to cut crazy directions and it was good. That was 3 years ago. I have since used it to tear up any storm debris and even trusted it enough to loan it to a neighbor. It's still working great. I fully intended to just get the tree off my car and have to throw it away before finishing. Pretty surprised. My previous harbor freight tool experience was about 20 years back when we got a cherry picker (engine hoist), a breaker bar and a wire feed welder. All their cheapest offerings. The hoist actually lasted a decent time (2-3 summers) but eventually the hydraulic seals failed. The breaker bar and welder were both broken within a week 😂. Glad i tried them again so far

This is definitely the last place I’ll look for tools. A lot of years ago I wasted a lot of money on there then crap tools that it’s hard for me to give them a second chance

I don't know if it's true or not but I had a person one time who worked at Lowe's tell me that if a product doesn't say U.S.A with the periods in between the letters that it is not actually made in the USA
