Jose is, like Makarov, A Wizard Saint. That's a title given to the 10 strongest guild wizards in the Fiore Kingdom. Lucy bests him by tricking him then kicking him in the nuts. Thats why we love her.

Lucy showing her love for Fairy Tail after getting saved by Natsu was what made me finally fall in love for the show. I liked it before but this scene and especially this arc started my passion completely.

The Strauss Siblings specializes transformation magic (Takeover Magic Specifically). I think Takeover isn't just a simple form of transformation. As the name suggests, theyre taking over their targets. Like absorbing them. This magic requires a lot of magic power as maintaining the form and using its abilities consumes magical energy. This is also dangerous type of magic. Cause they need to be stronger than the target or else the target will takeover the user instead, losing their self control. As you have saw in the flashback episode for Lisanna, Lisanna uses Animal Soul, which gives her ability to takeover the form of any Animal she had "defeated". Elfman uses Beast Soul that lets him takeover Mythical Beasts. But at the moment he can only use partial takeover or taking over only on a specific body part (which is his arm) Mirajane's is yet to be revealed. As of now, she can only use some basics. She couldn't use her magic to fight.

Maybe you've already noticed it, but I can't help to make it clear that in FT the boys are really strong of course, but the girls are literally beasts and you have seen nothing yet. FT is one of the few animes (if not the only one) that from the very start has given equal treatment to boys and girls in terms of strenght, bravery and battle strategy.
