i think most of the representation in hollywood is like "diversity hire." It feels like they just have these poc characters so they can classify themselves as "woke" and avoid being cancelled which i think results in these awful stereotypes and representation.

i agree, which is so disheartening because why are we a diversity hire 🤨 instead of whole characters who are integral to the story. thank you for watching cutie

having south asian women and their plots/character revolving around sex (& often intertwined with marriage + familial/cultural oppression) is a common theme in the west to the point of having these stereotypes bleed into my childhood conversations with people who were not south asians. we are simultaneously made to be oversexualized, sexless, or oppressed/victims/trauma of s. violence. examples from the top of my head of this include esmerelda, devi, inej ghafa, jasmine, karen shetty. not saying these narratives can’t exist or even that some in isolation are bad, but they shouldn’t be the only ones for brown women and should be handled with care. we deserve to see ourselves as more, and any cultural aspects of our backgrounds not constantly defined by sexual undertones. our gender based oppression is used as characterization when deemed of use, but we are nearly always left out of mainstream western conversations surrounding feminism.

you touched a point i didn't even think of. You're absolutely right, our sexuality is stereotyped and pushes us into a box, yet we are forgotten about in mainstream feminist conversations. I do agree these stories CAN exist, but we need more then just this one narrative that has been repeated so many times. Thank you for watching and for your detailed analysis!

Heyy I agree with your comment but idk which Esmeralda you're talking about? If you're refering to the Disney one, she is actually Romani!

@@yasminechoerryscherry3701 romani are of south asian descent and often many south asian and romani stereotypes are intertwined! basically not all south asians are romani but romanis are still south asian (culturally and ethnically). i mentioned inej ghafa too and she's romani and indian coded while being played by a nepali actress which all full under the broader category of south asian

@@yaarvekho now that you say it it does make sense! I know that Romanis are from south Asian descent but I thought they would be considered very different nowadays after centuries living in Europe and around the world, since their cultures are very mixed. However yes you're totally right

as a native indian, i feel excited whenever there is a story portraying a south asian character, doesnt matter in what light the movies/series shows them. Here we enjoy the "indian nerd with a thick accent who works at microsoft tech support" character as much as we would enjoy a "strong indian jock with a 6 pack" character(this character doesnt exist btw lol). this is because we are not the ones directly facing the consequences of this blatant stereotyping. i can only imagine how hard it is for 1st and 2nd gen south asian immigrants. and can someone please tell hollywood that no south asian who knows english speaks in that thick of an accent!!!! love the hijab(khimar?) look btw.

your perspective is so interesting, it does get tough when one trope becomes the mainstream trope of south asians, when we have so many experiences. which u mentioned, the "strong indian jock with a 6 pack" doesn't even exist 😂 which it should. But we'll get there! thank you for your kind words, and for watching!

I think an underrated part of media is UK tv shows - they usually have fairly representative cast and their entire identity isn’t about their race or ethnicity or religion, and even then if it is the main plot point it’s usually done pretty well imo

I actually noticed this, UK media includes a lot of representation without making a point about it. UK dramas are elite. thanks for watchig mondol

I agree, and I think there needs to be more stories that don't revolve around trauma for POC main characters. It creates this stereotype that POC are damaged by default.

originally (not what Disney did) Little Mermaid was about Christianity and girl sacrificing her sisters and herself for "soul" and "love", so I'm really intrigued now what's new version telling.

a lot of the Disney stories and folk tales are originally very gruesome 😂 I didn't know that was the case about the Little Mermaid as well 😔

ngl but i acc agree with you! i think the representation that is being put in place is just further going along with stereotypes at least in western media as well, there's been so many shows i've seen with south asian, east asian, black etc. main characters with them being stereotyped heavily. there's always exceptions to the rule ofc but the majority is just crazy i feel like i think this is also why treasuring shows from fellow poc is also very important as you're less likely to find stereotypes then in comparison to yt run shows and also treasuring media from a person of country origin like bollywood or nollywood for an example! i am mentioning nollywood here bc idk if is a big deal over in north america but over here in the uk bc there are so many recent african immigrants have come over it is somewhat of a big deal to ppl of the african community also hope your fasting is going very well and you're having a good ramadan too alhamdulilah!

also idk about ms marvel as i have not rlly watched it but i have a smiliar affinity towards the show man like mobeen. just bc i'm from the uk and a lot of us uk pakistant/kashmiri guys out here even more so if you go to places like birmingham, bradford, manchester etc. aren't really like the south asian characters you see on tv as they defo are not like nerdy and are more have a street/gangster persona also so it was refreshing to see a character on tv that i had sort of grown up with which was nice and refreshing and it's characters like this we need to see more often as they are more relatable

I love Man like Mobeen! It's actually one of my comfort shows too! definitely gives south asians a narrative more accurate to many of our personalities growing up in a major city. we absoulty need to treasure show and films made by POC ppl, because thats where we'll find narratives that aren't centred around stereotypes (minus Mindy Kaling lol), and watching International television also does this and helps grow perspective, thats why i love watching films on criterion channel, they're curated from all over the world. love your perspective, thank you for watching!

@@sarahshhb yh absolutely you see i'm from the uk and maybe it's different in the states and canada but in the uk the perception towards asians is extremely different and i do hate american televison bc it has bogged asians into one stereotype sadly where as asians in the uk television scene are widely different and aren't bogged down as being nerdy losers so that is one thing i do appreciate as well! we just need less mindy kayling stereotype tv lmao but yh glad to watch and yh hope the channel grows!
