Well the cats out of the bag, I have a new duck hunting kayak! Old Town Canoe & Kayak were kind enough to send me one of their new Discovery 119 kayak/canoe hybrids for me to try out. In this video I give an overview of the boat and talk about my first impressions and expectations for it moving forward. I'm really looking forward to getting the solo sportsman out on the water for duck season so stay tuned for those videos very soon! Another very informative video, Thomas. I don't know what career path you may follow but your professional, organized, and detailed descriptions and delivery suite you well for "sales". In my time on the Louisiana bayous the individual duck hunting transport was, is the pirogue. (a wooden flat bottom canoe) Looking forward to seeing your duck hunting videos this season.

I’m a fan of your channel. Keep up the good work. I’ve taken a different approach when selecting a yak platform. I went high end and opted for a Hobie on account of a needing a boat that can serve both hunting and fishing. I use this platform year around and feel confident with the ability to cover long stretches of water, skinny water and the extra bonus of getting to a destination efficiently with a pedal drive. I realize this is significantly more costly; however, I’m convinced the benefits outweigh the cost.

Thanks Chris! It all comes down to what you need for your situation. I paddle through tight water and have to portage a lot so a light kayak is pretty essential for me. If I hunted a lot of open marshes I would definitely improve my hide and probably get a bigger kayak. I also don't fish out of my kayak much either so that isn't a factor for me.

Very good detailed video of this yak. I would really like to see a video of your burlap setup for the blind. The more I think about it the more I don’t wanna by a blind that I have to take the seat out in which is what most require on the market. We have long paddles into where we go and I want that seat to stay in.

Thanks Titus! I'm planning on making a full setup video once I get this kayak figured out a little more. It's perfect for long paddles, the material weighs next to nothing and you can have the kayak hidden in just a couple minutes.

I have a 15+ft Old Town that works well with a kayak paddle. It will also hold a tremendous amount of stuff (translated means I take too much). I have set it up to use a electric trolling motor as my shoulders do not work well anymore. I also have used burlap to camo my canoe. Take camo para cord and stretch it along outside of canoe and paint some wood clothespins and use that to fasten burlap to boat. I sewed ends together and just snug it up. Rolls up tight and throw it into decoy bag to transport it Take a machete and cut local material and here in Iowa, cut some willow trees to jam into the mud to help break your outline up. Very nice review.

Ive got this boat and while it is a little heavy and awkward to lift solo(Im 43), it paddles very well and I love its open layout for hauling lots of larger gear. I’ve even mounted an electric troller on it

Yes I want to get this exact canoe and I too am from here in ole southern VA. !!! Can you just bungee cord down the seat for when roof topping to your destination (river) ?

Have the Front face toward the rear so the wind always pushes it down.

Yea I'm really trying to decide between this a bonafide rs117, or the Crescent lite tackle. Although I'm not a duck hunter just want something for river camping and fishing on the river...

@@cameisnor6444 lol 👍 So I went with the Crescent Ck1 as they were released around this time last year. The ck1 and the lite tackle are both awesome though. I decided to get the ck1 because it's geared more towards rivers and is a foot shorter while also lighter. Crescent is also going to announce a new fishing kayak here in a couple weeks 🤙

Thanks man. Most the places I hunt nowadays are super secret public land or private land permissions. If you message me on Instagram or Facebook I can point you in the direction of some decent public ground

Is a blind a necessity or a luxury if the boat is already camo?

Some sort of hide will probably be a necessity, especially for big ducks. Even in a camo kayak you want to break up your outline at least a little bit.

I just ratchet strap it to the top of my car using the rails I have, if I had a truck I'd ratchet strap it into the bed

I have an Old Town Canoe love it, but the problems I see with the 119 is I hear they don't track the best and they don't have a large weight capacity. There's very little room for decoys and a dog.

I've actually been pretty impressed with the tracking for how light of a boat it is. It definitely does track better with more weight in it though. For me 354 lbs is enough, I don't take a dog in my kayak so all I have to worry about is gear. This kayak fits my situation very well, for guys who want to bring a dog and a lot of gear routinely a bigger kayak would probably fit better for them

You don't have all the tie downs of a kayak because it's a canoe hybrid - more canoe than kayak.

I’m really not a fan of this “kayak”. To be completely honest, the stability of this thing is nothing compared to the Ascend H12. I rather have a stable rig while paddling in the dark than something that tracks well. Just seems scary to me. Plus, the lack of storage for gear is a big negative for me.

I've found it to be plenty stable for what I need, yeah it's not rock solid but I feel completely safe shooting out of and paddling this boat. I think the 119 will excel in certain situations and fall short in others, the H12 is no different in that respect. A NuCanoe Frontier 12 for example completely outclasses the 119 and H12 in terms of stability but if you're doing a lot of paddling you'll get tired quick in one of those. For what I do the 119 fits what I want pretty well.
