Preserving the legacy of a father she never knew. In his latest feature Greg McQuade introduces us to the Mechanicsville woman who is dedicating her life to sharing the story of one of the most infamous events during WWII. She doesn’t want people to forget her father and his fellow soldiers who never made it home. Mary Ann Smith’s father - James Coates - died during the Battle of the Bulge 80 year ago. He and 85 of his fellow soldiers surrendered to the Germans but were executed in a field during what is known as the Malmedy Massacre. Mary Ann was only two years old when her Dad died. For decades Mary Ann has been sharing the story. She even carries her father’s personal belongings to schools, museums and exhibits. Mary Ann says she missed out on so much not having her father. She says by talking about him a small part of father remains alive. Mary Ann says she wants people to always remember what happened that dreadful day.
