I have a slightly blocked car radiator to unblock, I try dishwasher tablets, Wynn's Radiator Flush and Bicarbonate of Soda. which one will be the best at getting the radiator spotlessly clean?!
This is a 2002 Toyota Colorado D4D Automatic.

Thermocure is the best product to clean out the entire cooling system.

After adding clean water with dish soap to wash as much imputities as you can in several runs, use comong white vinegar, wich is an acid and it eats corrosion. Let it run un til hot, then let it seat for 24 hour. Then flush and wash radiator. Baking soda helps to neutralize the acidity of vinegar. It is not just the radiator that is full of corrosion, but the whole system, and you must fight all the corrosion.

A few years ago, GM changed supplier of radiator flush for their diesel trucks, but there was a time when they did not have any radiator flush, so they recommended using Cascade Dishwasher Compound to the dealers. Just the granules in the green box. I never tried it. I have been having a difficult time cleaning the cooling system in my 1959 Ford Fairlane. The modern flush is made for radiators and engines that have aluminum in them, and it is milder than the old products that were made for cars like mine that have cast iron blocks and heads along with copper radiators.

I looked up a few things about cleaning the cooling system. I saw an assortment of sure cures for a rusty system. 1. White Vinegar: Acetic Acid is the active component. People said that it takes 6 weeks of driving to do a good job. I wonder if the car would smell like a pickle factory. 2. Citric Acid: Attacks rust, but not good iron. Used in wine making, and food preserving. 3. Oxalic Acid 1000 grams per 10 Liters of water. Then drive the car regularly for 3 months before flushing. Sold as wood bleach. 4. Motorcraft VC-9 for cast iron blocks, VC-1 for aluminum blocks. About $32 per quart. 5. Sulphamic (Sulphuric?) acid. Tile and grout cleaner, then follow up with Oxalic acid. Guaranteed to do the trick! @@mattsavage4x4

My 96 and 97 cougar both had clogged radiators and resivours. On my 96 I used tap to flush and it would only trickle out (was badly clogged) thew in some blue devil cleaner into the resivour after draining as much as i could from the clogged system. It knocked everything loose and the radiator was letting water fly out the bottom. 3-4 tap water flushes later most of the gunk was gone,

Hi, thanks for your enlightening comment. To conclude, it is the best thing to do, just buy a new radiator. I guess you have a vehicle with a blocked radiator? What vehicle is it?

Vinegar will unblock your radiator. It just takes a few days... after you another option is a strong water jet... all of these solutions can likely cause a leak. The best option is to replace it. If you can't afford it, or are in an emergency situation. The cheaper alternative is to go to a junk yard. I don't think the brits have those as they are an island nation lol

Exactly! My intention was to clean it, but after trying quite a few different ways I came to the conclusion It was just a waste of time and the only way to sort this problem out is to buy a new radiator. So that is kind of the message, if your radiator is as bad as this one was, it is a waste of time trying to clean it, just buy a new one!

Looks like you're looking to clean out the rust corrosion rather than unblocking. A chemical for drain cleaning like crc might do a better job. You also used different methods of application rather than a consistent comparison. Vinegar and citrus acid to take care of the rust.

Your conclusion are wrong on so many fronts for an average DIYer trying to save money.. 1. Even if you had used something to make the area you were looking at shiny, theres no guarantee it would have worked its way through the tubes, because there is no way of knowing how much of the tube length is clogged up with rust sludge. You will never chemically clear a fully blocked tube in a short time.. 2. Had you maintained proper anti freeze levels in the first place the cooling sysytem would never have gotten this dirty 3.CRC make a product called Evaporust. Expensive but does not harm metals. You could fill your cooling system with that for some days and get the surfaces fairly clean. It would not clean a fully blaocked tube though unless you left in there for a very long time. 4. As opposed to the amount of time you spent doing the tests, in 3-4 hours you could have taken off the tanks, rodded the tubes, and hot water pressure cleaned the lot, and re assembled. Cost: 20p vs your 150 pounds.

Shouldve poured CLR in and agitated for a few hours. Ive unclogged like 6 radiators with CLR and an agitation machine I custom built. The agitator i made vibrates the radiator with an electric motor. Works like a charm 👍.If you want a professional to unclog your radiator for an affordable price message me 👍.
