This song is a masterpiece on many levels. Dire Straits is incredible, Mark Knopfler is a treasure. I hope you spend some time exploring more of both. It will be time well-spent.

Prince was once asked by a journalist “what’s it like being the greatest guitarist ever? “ and he replied back I don’t know why don’t you go ask Mark Knopfler. That tells you what a brilliant musician he is and so respected among his peers. His guitar playing is just crying along with the soldiers on the battlefield. Incredibly beautiful and majestic.

Simply one of the best war protest songs ever written. Told as the final words of a mortally wounded soldier. Mark Knopfler is a special talent.

Marks was inspired to write this song because of the Falklands War was that was going on at the time; he actually lost a friend of his in the conflict. The song is from the viewpoint of a dying soldier who is realizing that he will not make it home, and who is bidding his fellow soldiers and brother's in arms 'farewell'. When Mark performed this song live for Nelson Mandela's birthday at Wembley, he was visibly emotional, and his closing solo was awe-inspiring. More broadly, it is a warning about armed conflicts ('we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms'). In addition to being a one of kind musician, he is a masterful story teller.

The term “brothers in arms” is used to describe the bond that grows between the troops during the devastation of war. It describes the camaraderie that forms not only among British soldiers, but also among members of the Armed Forces of all nationalities. Brothers in Arms was written during the conflict between Britain and Argentina, who fought over the Falkland Islands off the coast of Argentina. The war continued from 2nd April 1982 until 14th June 1982, beginning with Argentina invading the islands, and ending in British victory. There were 907 military and civilian deaths during the conflict, from both sides, including 255 British servicemen and three Falkland Island civilians.
