Anjali Menon -- director of Koode, Bangalore Days and Manjadikkuru, and writer of Ustad Hotel -- talks about what Bangalore means to Malayalis, and explains the new-gen phase of Malayalam cinema. (She singles out Ranjith's Kaiyoppu and Sameer Thahir's Chaappa Kurishu.) She talks about Padmarajan, Bharathan, Fasil, MT Vasudevan Nair, KG George, about the improved technique in Malayalam cinema. She discusses being a "woman filmmaker" and the Women in Cinema Collective. She talks about how she directs actors like Fahadh Faasil and Dulquer Salmaan, and her sensibility (she's also a dancer, and she says it helps her work in cinema). She talks about collaborating with technicians, making rooted cinema and being an outsider, and, lastly, about Mammooty and Mohanlal.

the luckiest part of Malayalam film industry is that they have got such wonderful mature audiences that they are able to understand and appreciate all sort of stories and all other aspects of film making that exists in this world and by audience I mean the most ground level of people, may be an auto wala or vegetable vendor or housemaker alongwith the youth which is the new generation. And with that the best aspect of film industry is that they have excellent producers who is ready to put money on any good project irrespective of stars and the industry has excellent intelligent writers and directors who think and are willing to tackle any subject. Ofcourse finally the industry has such great and talented stars be it hero, heroine, character artistes, villains all of whom just want to make a good movie and hence ready to take any risk and challenges and not at all worried only about remuneration or their image.

Love love love this interview. One of the best interviews I've ever seen. The interviewer-interviewee chemistry was spot on. Thank you Mr. Baradwaj for asking such good questions that facilitated such wonderful answers. What a pleasure it was to hear Ms. Anjali Menon articulate her process and talk about film-making. I especially loved all the little anecdotes and examples from her film-making experience that brought us that much closer to some of our favorite Malayalam movies.

The younger crop of actors are doing very differebt and unique films now which is true. At the same time, mammootty and mohanlal did the same while they started out in the 80's and 90's. Their body of work is applaudable considering the massive range of films and very unique characters these two actors have played in the past 25 to 30 years. Like Anjali rightly said, mammootty's ponthanmada and vidheyan and add to it mrugaya...wow!! Thumbs up to these two versatile actors. Nammal malayalikaludey abhimaanam
