Hello! We are Mauro and Harriet and in 2021 we bought an abandoned smallholding in Castellón, Spain.
Somehow I've managed to live here for the whole winter without a hot, indoor shower, but hopefully that's about to change! I have no idea what I'm doing but I've got an IBC, I've got a pump, I've got a water heater, and a roll of piping... what could go wrong?

For someone who is self-admittedly inexperienced, your first step should always be READ THE MANUAL! Also, you should consider heating the water as close to the point of use as possible, not running heated water through pipes that are long runs outside. The sink looks great!

I have the same green generator (well his newer brother) and it works on my `Chinese` inverters. And your inverter is also `Chinese`, so it requires a pure sine wave generator. Better inverter chargers (like victron) will be able to take energy from any type of generator and convert into pure sine wave. You live and learn.

@LittleSpanishFarmstead
@LittleSpanishFarmstead 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I saw that tool, would have been handy but think it was like €50 so I said no 😂 I think a strong possibility for why it caught fire was because I had the unit at an angle while I was testing the connections, and the flame inside has to burn completely vertically. I think. Anyway, I had better luck in the 2nd attempt!

Hi Harriet, We are also doing a rebuild of a derelict cottage on a small farm in Alicante and are enjoying your vids, keep up the good work. We made the mistake of trying to charge our 3 panel solar system off the generator, if you have a 3k invertor you need a generator of at least 6k to charge it, now we just run the stuff directly off the generator until we get some sun back. Hope that helps. And keep up the good work.
@LittleSpanishFarmstead
@LittleSpanishFarmstead 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them. We have a 3k inverter and a 5k generator. Ideally it would be 6 but the next model up was 7k and significantly heavier, we really wanted something I'd be able to move around the finca to use in other places. Hopefully it's okay, although it might charge slower and cost more in petrol than a bigger model. Why do you say "mistake", out of curiosity?
@justinscottrand2827
@justinscottrand2827 2 жыл бұрын
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead Ah I meant mistake as in we should have bought a bigger generator, while it works plugged into the solar inverter it just doesn't seem to charge enough the batteries to make it worth leaving on overnight for example. I am presuming you will have solar heated water in your agenda! May i suggest that the solar hot water feeds the instant gas heater - as mine does - and it will reduce your gas comsumption😁. Thank you that is a great point, I did want to put some solar heated water on the roof of the shower when I know a bit more about what I'm doing lol, I didn't think of sending that water through the boiler too though. That's a good point. Of course it will use less gas if it registers the correct temperature is already reached. At least, I assume it does, and won't pointlessly try and heat it even more.

Did you have some sort of thread sealant on the gas line to water heater connection? I didn't see you attach it at 4:10 , which is why I ask. Metal threads won't stop flowing gas from escaping and you could have had a cloud of gas ignite everything.

Like Teflon? Not on the original attempt, which was just supposed to be a quick test. I have been told it's not necessary but since it can't hurt to use some, I actually have used some now.

I'm sorry to see you there on your own. I'd love to come on a Sunday to help. You should ask for help. 10 people in one day, imagine the work that could be done. I'll be in Valencia until the end of June,then I'm gone to the Canaries. Seriously, I'd love to help. Don't you think I want something back.

Hi Veronica! That's so kind of you! We do have a workshare group with some neighbours but that's just once a week. I'd love to have visitors over - I was hoping to finish the shower first as I felt like having a working shower was a basic necessity that I wanted to be able to offer, hopefully it'll be done soon though! If you want to drop me an email at harriethryder@gmail.com let's chat! 💚

Hi Harriet, I'm sorry for the problem with the instant water heater. The problem might have been that it was inclined, it has to be mounted vertically on a wall. The "llama" must burn vertically. 🔥 You're brave though, and i wish you good luck. Regards Rickard from Sweden 🇸🇪

Aw thanks Rickard! I think the inclination was the issue, yes. Instruction booklet sadly didn't draw attention to that very important fact - I guess it's just common knowledge which I lacked!

I fully appreciate your desire to do as much as possible yourself... BUT... whether that's from pride, satisfaction or financial restraints, there does come a time when professional help is strongly advised. In doing something very similar to what you have embarked upon, I set myself a budget for those elements that I had no expertise in and which were potentially downright dangerous if I got wrong. I am happy to learn as I go about the elements which, if wrong, can be fixed fairly easily but, when it comes to most plumbing and ALL electrics, the consequences of getting it wrong can be disastrous and dangerous. Just my tuppence worth! Otherwise, keep up the amazing work you are doing but please recognise that there is no shame whatsoever in recognising what is safely outside you realm of competence.

Thank you! With electrics we have professions doing that. Note in the last video about our solar, a professional came to help us move the electric installation. A simple gas canister powered water heater is not supposed to need professional installation. I think I'm just an idiot. I have an experienced friend coming to help with attempt no. 2 though, so don't worry.

Sometimes life won't allow you to do it all on your own. You really need to get someone in to help you understand how these things work that has the knowledge they can pass on to you. I am sure you will have to pay them but in the long run it is for your own good. I really think you need to put something around your hoses that go through the shed for protection from chaffing against the sharp holes you drilled. Your still doing really well. please be careful.. Do you have a place undercover you can work in when it is raining.??

Oh you poor thing! What a loss with the water heater.. I've never installed one before, but we used to have one that needed a pilot light (a flamme) and for that reason, there was a always a little flamne on, and needed to be absolutely vertical and attached to a wall for security. So it could be the reason if it is the same type as yours(?), the flamme will be vertical no matter what and catch / burn the wrong thing if the unit is not vertical and yours was at a really low angle from the video.. Did it come with installation instructions? You can also get a yellow gas tape over the thread to tighten. It's not real tape, as it's not sticky, but it is super thin and stretchy. They do some in light blue for water connectors, and white as well but it is for placi g around the threads to help give it a grip.. And an extra tip to check for gas leaks, use a bit of dishsoap on the connectors, like one drop, and rub it over the connection, then with a spray bottle spray water on it, and if bubbles appear, you have a gas leak. But what a lovely job with the sink in the bathroom, this will be so good to have with the mirrors, what an improvement! Have you come across 12 volt camping showers? They can simply be a little pump with a nice shower head or o e that also heats up the water. That coukd be a back-up.. But I really hope you can get the hot water sorted though. As for the battery and electrical I don't know much.. But keep perservering. When it rains like that, you have to use the generator, not much else you can do. Best wishes!

Thank you so much, I didn't know that about the heater needing to be vertical - I mean, I read that it should be installed vertically but I didn't know why and assumed it would be OK to test it out quickly at an angle. In fact I didn't think about the angle at all! Glad I published this video and read this comment today, as I am gonna try again with the new heater tomorrow!

Hi Harriet, the instant water we had was a long time ago, but I always remembered the little pilot flamne from it. From your video, I just assumed it was a pilot flamme gone wrong accident..! But I'm no expert. Have you found any youtube videos installs of the water heater you've got or similar? Look for videos of mistakes to avoid, or what to look out for.. That's how we learned lots on our ends... many times, post doing the wrong things... ahahah Glad to know you've got a neighbour helping you out, that has got the same one. Hopefully you figure it out. If in doubt, take a breather, get a nice cuppa and reassess :) Good luck tomorrow!

Also I second having the hot water system as close to kitchen and bath, so that the hot water has less to travel and cool down before getting to the shower. Learned that the hard way too....

Ok love the way you are so handy. And attenpted everything win sum loose sum. Just a thaught though. Dont be a man. 😂😂read the instructions on the appliances. I think thats why you burnt your water heater out. There could have been plastic coverings on stuff that were supposed to be removed that caught alight. I had mine in a box for 4years and did ut myself. I do remember having to take some plastic covers off. Just a thaught. But others wise crack on love💪👍👍👌

what exactly are generators linked to? are they a pure backup on the AC side?
@LittleSpanishFarmstead
@LittleSpanishFarmstead 2 жыл бұрын
The inverter/charge controller has a AC cable coming out of it with a normal plug on the end. That plug goes into the generator. But you could plug anything you wanted into the generator. you just have to be careful with anything like a laptop or stuff with chips, sometimes the generator can fry them (apparently).
