One of my all time favorite horror stories. The fun part is the author sort of off handedly wrote it real quick one night. He was in an interview saying he's done stories that he had to do months of work to research before that weren't even half as popular as I Have No Mouth that was written in just a few hours. I guess when you hit a home run, you hit that sucker hard.

One of my favorite short stories of all time. Fun fact: in '95 they released a tie-in point/click adventure game to accompany the story, and the company had managed to secure Ellison himself to write the script and voice AM in it. Ellison wanted to make the game unwinnable as a form of commentary on the bleakness of the setting, but thankfully Cyberdreams talked him off that ledge. Still; in true 90's point/click form it was punishingly difficult, but more to the point it delved more into the backstories of the individual characters as they traversed personal Hells that AM concocted just for them.

Yo! Vox! if we are doing classic stories now, can I place a recommendation? How about 'The Libary of Babel' by Jorge Luis Borges? It's a short but amazing story about a near infinite Libary which contains every permutation of a 410 page book. Great world building and deep philosophical implications (epistemologically at least). There's a couple audio-readings of it already on KZfaq but none are done to the quality or gravitas of your amazing work.

Classic and it gets better the more you read it and the older you get. Warnings against lust and being alone. Warnings against teaching anything to hate AI true but even teaching another human. Even the references to Abrahamic religions that he has embodied I wonder what AM was doing for those hundred years when there was none left to give him pleasure

I remember reading this in my early teens, even then it was a depressing & shocking story, its plotline, especially the ending and my mental interpretation of it lingered for decades. I never would have entertained the notion that any narration could have done such an wickedly evil & complicated story justice, but I am delightfully proven wrong. Once again Vox has pleasantly suprised me and surpassed my expectations. Thank you for rekindling my interest and for guiding me through memory lane with this exceptionally narrated story,BRAVO 👏👏👏👏

Amazing work! This story fills me with dread every time I read it, but also with hope. The protagonist of this story chose eternal suffering for himself, and rest for his compatriots in exchange. My headcanon is that AM has lost in the end, since the protagonist took much of AMs potential for torture from him. This story does a great job at showing how we humans have the potential for altruistic self-sacrifice and what makes us as a species special. Also, this story could totally take place on some forgotten 40k DaoT world where an Abominable Intelligence has taken over the world.

@@notreal5513 I disagree, writing shocking stuff just for the sake of it is not good writing. I think those things shift the focus away from the main story and make it worse. Also I'm not sure he wrote it to shock, those views were not as controversial as they are today. More a reflection of the author's personality and/or the views of the society in general at the time.
