‘Those who don’t have the stomach to fight, they leave the Congress,’ says the Congress leader, in an exclusive interview with Sreenivasan Jain.
In her most extensive interview so far in the 2024 campaign, Priyanka opened up to Sreenivasan Jain about a range of issues and controversies defining this election.
Asked about voters suggesting they will vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi despite facing problems such as price rise and unemployment, due to the lack of an “alternative”, she says, “I don’t think the public trusts the media. So I don’t think the public is even going to tell you what they’re thinking.”
Asked about the PM’s divisive statements on Muslims and mangalsutra, the Congress leader says, “People don’t like it. It’s run its course.”
“If you ask people wherever I’m going, if I’m talking about the fact that he’s saying we’re going to steal their buffaloes, people are laughing…He’s telling lakhs and lakhs of people absolute lies that are not in our manifesto. I mean this is the prime minister of the country.”
When it comes to the PM’s allegation that the Congress has stopped speaking about Adani-Ambani because of “tempos of black money” being sent to the Congress, Priyanka points out - “He says my brother (Rahul Gandhi) doesn’t talk about Adani Ambani anymore. I mean I was with him in two meetings yesterday. He must have taken their name at least 12 times. So he is talking about them every day.”
Asked about chinks in the Congress’s armour and the exodus of several leaders, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra says, “This is the time to fight with everything we’ve got. And as we fight, we will build. Because when you fight what happens?...those who don’t have the stomach for the fight, those who are fearful, those who have cases and need to sort out their stuff, they leave.”
“As a sister, I would like my brother (Rahul Gandhi) to be a happy man”, she said. “I would like him to get married. I would like him to have kids. That's what I would like as a sister.”

*PLEASE READ VERY VERY CAREFULLY:* Quite a lively interview, at macro level of BJP workers 2 episodes ago.. ...She was quite bold, frank and very articulate. It's my standard-practice to not use "as a.." CARD anywhere in anything, but as somebody who's seen this side of the country's _de facto_ two-party system of the schemes' effectiveness given India's wafer-thin but communal deep State - I can't fault for her being great orator and all her restrained criticism against the BJP-dominated NDA regimes and the nEwS and other masscomm( Indian cinema and TV) propaganda ecosystem undergirding it are more than fair, in a silver-lining kind of way. And given so many innovations historically wrought under the UPA regimes in spite of aforementioned fundamental Achilles Heel of the deep State, which is more communal than capitalistically corrupt, contrary to the RW agitprop of "what the Congress has done all these decades" - is no small feat. However.. That also brings warts, and there are great ones. Kashmir; no penalty imposed for the terrorist destruction of Babri Mosque, consequent riots in then-Bombay; and the situation that wrought the 2nd travesty to its fore: The nationwide Emergency under Late Indira Gandhi, except for the Indian side of Kashmir because it was already under a martial rule and excluded because of Article 370.( This is briefly covered by special guest senior reporter Mr Jain in his miniseries `The India Report` where he exceptionally refers to Thatcher's bestie Indira as “autocrat” for it.) But at least, one could appreciate the honesty in it - as opposed to the worsened _de facto_ nationwide Emergency( except for Kashmir, again) situation steadily progressing from bad state-of-affairs by UPA since 2014. And at the very least, Congress did contest the elections after that _de jure_ Emergency wherever it was in force - the BJP-dominated coalition has fielded 0 candidates from the Indian side of Kashmir where there has been _de jure_ fluctuating Emergency mere weeks after the last elections at this scale in 2019, that's a big microcosm of Imperial( euphemised: colonial) attitude towards the region by the Indian State, be it UPA or NDA in power. This, *in spite of* the current Indian Leader's visit to the region mere weeks ago. And while BJP's aspirations are not as bad in other martial-law( AFSPA administered) regimes in the always-ignored Northeastern regions, it speaks volumes that the BJP has halved its chances in Manipur by sacking 3 faces and introducing only newbie Inner Manipur candidate, leaving its NEDA( Northeastern sub-coalition under NDA) member to fend for itself in the Christian-majority regions of Outer Manipur constituency. Overall.. I still think that BJP-dominated NDA coalitions shall emerge victorious because South Asians love being servile( like that survey about how many percentage of Indian citizens would be content bring ruled under an autocracy or Indian Armed Forces junta being a sheer microcosm), if they're getting their deep-seated stench of hatred fanned and manifested openly in the process - all the more merrier. And a century or so down the line, they'd use this a next historical-grievance against the perceived Other, refusing to concede their own ancestors' willingness for their own self-absorbed aka individualist priorities.

Given my young age, I wasn't familiar with Sreenivasan Jain's work at NDTV but his journalism is excellent, he clearly asked tough questions to Priyanka and thats how it should be from a journalist unlike godi media

This is how an interview is done. It's a road side interview and look how at ease the interviewee is and how she is responding clearly, firmly yet politely to each question. No drama, no script, no softball questions and yet she is not dodging a single one, not looking down at the journalist contemptuously with her nostrils flared, not making nasty, snarky whataboutery. Will the Shri Shri Adaraniya Maximum Authority Minimum Accountability Mahaparampratapi Mahapurush or any of his cardboard cutout minions be able to take even 1% of this sort of questions and follow-up questions?

Why is Congress against Secularism? To please its vote bank Secularism means that government policies do not prefer one religion over another. But RaGa policies suppress Hindus and give special treatment to Mu/$l!ms - 4% reservation - it is against our constitution. Different laws for its vote bank. Paying Maulvis salary from taxpayers money in Delhi. Priests are not getting paid.

For example the German State funds Churches, which is against their secular constitution. Now there is a growing demand to fund mosques and temples too. A truly secular state will stay away from religion. It's not about serving religion equally.

Also if I have to defend myself, my defence is that the person who is in power since 10 years hasn't given one single interview or press conference, always speaking whatever he wants and doesn't care to answer people's questions whereas both the brother and sister are atleast addressing the basic problems (solving those problems is a whole another debate) which are not related to religion at all!

I really like her. Intelligent, witty, smart , outspoken and can put people in their place. Graceful of her to admit her own flaw of interrupting n also telling the journalist . U hv the same habit , which is true cos i honestly thot her was interrupting her more as he just wanted to present his questions. And truer words werent spoken when she spoke about the loss of touch with reality and being cut off from people. Narcissists are always disconnected from their own n outer reality and often are pathological liars. This would be the most fantastic case study for a classic narc profile! All traits n more exhibited.... Last , but not the least, I do hope she is PM candidate in the future.

In the midst of a fairly challenging interview, she eased the tension with humour, very endearing. And great job, Srinivasan, your confidence in dealing with people with power (this also includes your splendid Brij Bhushan interview) is what we expect from a strong media, unlike the scaredy cats from the so called big media houses. People like you should become mainstream media again. The media has a huge role to play in a democracy, and like Priyanka said, it is far more a fault of a pliant media than a weak opposition that the country is in the state it is in.

I first remember Sreenivasan Jain during the 26/11 terrorist attack at Taj Mahal hotel standing and reporting from very near by the waterfront reporting continuously and fearlessly on the horrific incident.! The same commitment and fervour comes across with his most beautiful, non-stop interview with Madam Priyanka Gandhi now.
