I have to be induced at 39 weeks for my 1st baby. Will this increase my chances of a C-section?

You mentioned that you're going to be induced at 39 weeks for a medical reason, and this is your first baby. You have some concerns about whether or not this induction will increase your chances of C-section. Generally speaking, in the days to weeks leading up to delivery, if a woman goes into labor spontaneously, her body starts to do some prep work. So your body releases hormones called prostaglandins that act on the cervix and actually ripen it just like a fruit ripens. It softens in consistency, it moves forward in your pelvis, it begins to thin out, and then once your brain starts to release oxytocin, which is the hormone that makes your uterus contract, it will act on the cervix when you're having regular and intense contractions, and cause it to dilate.
First-time moms are in labor for, on average, 12 to 18 hours, and this is from the point your cervix starts actively changing from hour to hour. That doesn't include the prep work, it doesn't include irregular contractions you might have leading up to the contractions that are actually dilating your cervix. So really, for most moms, the first baby is just a long haul anyway. And at the end of it all, when you're 10 centimeters, you have to push for 1 to 2 hours. So it can be a long, grueling process, especially for first-time moms.
Basically, when you're induced, we have to mimic what your body would have been doing spontaneously, and just squish it into a day or two. So if your body hasn't already done that ripening, if you're cervix is far back in your pelvis, it's thick, it's hard in consistency and not dilated much, then we have to administer some ripening agents that will act on your cervix and ripen it, as I discussed before. And then after giving those ripening agents, they'll likely have to start pitocin, also known as oxytocin, which is the hormone that your brain would have released if you went into labor spontaneously, to give you contractions. Basically, we just make them start for you, and this is given through the IV. And again, regular and intense contractions will cause your cervix to dilate, and then you'll be in labor.
Now how does this all relate to your chances of C-section being higher or not? Our thought, for a long time, has been that if you induce a mom for fun at 39 weeks (but you mentioned you're being induced for medical reasons, so it's absolutely necessary - whether you end up with a vaginal delivery or a C-section, it needs to happen), our thought has been if you try to force a mom's body to do something that it's not ready to do on her first baby, then she may be less likely to progress, and a C-seciton might be slightly more likely. With that said, C-section rates are not astronomically high. There are plenty of women who still deliver vaginally that are induced.
And there have actually been studies done in other countries that have shown that C-section rates are lower at 39 weeks than they are at 41 weeks, which is a woman's ultimate due date. We won't let you go past that point, because the placenta has an expiration date. It stops feeding your baby like it should after about 40 weeks, and for sure after 41 weeks, and so at that point, they need to come out. And the reason why C-section rates are lower at 39 weeks than they are at 41 is because the placenta is healthier. We can be more patient, because your baby is better able to tolerate labor and contractions. So we can give you more time to let your body dilate than we might be able to when you're 41 weeks and the baby is experiencing lots of stress during labor because the placenta is old and not perfusing as well.
So overall, is your chance of C-section higher? It might be slightly, but if so, probably not much. I recommend talking with your doctor about the specifics of your situation, and based on their knowledge of your circumstances, they'll be able to give you the best information about what to expect. Good luck with everything, and congratulations ahead of time! And if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.

I was just recently induced at 39weeks and I had a wonderful healthy labor and vaginal delivery. This was my second baby, I had so many questions I was so scared as well but I pushed him out in under 5minutes. They did an external version because my little stubborn newborn turned head up at 39weeks but everything went well, Thanks to God and my wonderful doctors! (Nurses as well) my baby is 2days old

Thank you for making this video. I have told that I will need to be induced at 39 weeks. I am currently 33. And I really wanted to go to 40. But know that the placenta is healthier at 39 and it will be better for the baby gives me a lot of reassurance. Thank you.

This video needs to be updated - the chances of c-section after 39 weeks goes up, not down. This based on a huge study published in the NEJM.

The ‘New England Journal Of Medicine’ study states women induced at 39w have an 18% chance and women induced at 41w have a 22% chance for a c-section. I just went over the study with my doctor.

The c-section rate is so HIGH in America and a few other places. It's supposed to be between 10-15% but its getting closer and closer to 50%. I visited a doctor with a 42% c section rate and completely understood why his number is so high. By the time I left je had tried to force voluntary induction at 37 weeks on me atleast 4 or 5 times even though i was 0% effaced and 0 centimeters dilated. These doctors will pad your charts and make up all kinds of silly reasons for inductions even though their patients will suffer and its really just about their schedule. The doc i referred to above was the only doc in the clinic so he definitely preferred c section to keep his schedule in tact. NOT my concern . . . (shrugs).

sangay kiatamba Fight back! They will try to bully you with threats of a dead baby and so many other disgusting tactics. Always ask for facts and documentation. If they can't or won't provide it then find someone who will. The health care system is out of control. They are currently working to make automatic induction at 39 weeks standard protocol. We as people (especially moms) have to fight against these unethical and unconstitutional practices. I have literally had a doctor lie to me in order to try to force my hand. We should be able to trust these people, but unfortunately we can't. If you haven't already then you should definitely watch "the business of being born" Medical inyerventions are wonderful things as long as the benefits outweigh the risks. Unfortunately doctors are overusing them and patients are sufferring because of it. My doctor purposely broke my water prematurely to try to force my hand. They then attempted 32 hours worth of inductions which didn't work at all. When they then tried to force c section I simply gathered my things and walked out without a word. I chose to fight back against the downward spiral of unnecessary medical interventions. A c section is a big deal. Its a very invasive surgery. C sections shouldn't be normalized or elective. I wish you the best. Stay strong mama 😍

thank you so much for your encouragement it means a lot to me, i was so discourage yesterday hearing my doctor telling me that my child will die if i don't get induced, i came home crying and this is my first baby, I'M not over due, i have no medical situation, and my child is healthy why am I being pressured?? just to find out that he is traveling sometime this month that's why he's trying to force me to get induced. It's sad that they are just all about the money and don't care about the well being of the people that are trusted to their care.

sangay kiatamba I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. I have a background in the medical field and know better and the doctors saying stuff like that still makes me paranoid and immediately go into a pissed off/panic mode (mommy horomones). One time I stayed up all night crying and periodically eating bites of ice cream to keep baby moving because I was so stressed and terrified by the doctors threats of a dead baby even though nothing was actually wrong. My doctor said that to me because I refused a pelvic exam at 37 weeks (due to me being prone to infections and the exam really being unnecessary). When he said that to me I almost jumped out of my skin with rage and distrust. Instead of acting on those feelings I simply made him aware that I know pelvics have nothing to do with fetal health and that if he was ginuinely concerned that I was open to a biophysical ultrasound and weekly stress tests. He frowned and walked out saying that he doesnt need me and that I should be grateful to have such a "great doctor." 😔🙊😋😂 I'm no doctor, but I definitely believe between true facts and a mommy's intuition we can't go wrong. Mind you true facts don't include a doctor's "medical opinion" because you're so right . . . these days their medical opinions seem to only benefit their time and their pockets 😔 I always try my best to support other mommy's because between pregnancy discrimination and abusive doctors we need a safe place. Please feel free to comment here anytime!

My doc told me my baby will die if don’t get induced I felt like crying I feel like she wanted to scare me into signing the papers she this without even knowing how big my baby was because I have gestaional diabetes she said i basically have to even though my blood sugar is under control from diet and exercise I feel so conflicted about it but now I’m scared if I don’t and scared if I do but I would hate to do that to my body if it wasn’t necessary

I mean sometimes it’s medically indicated. I’m having an induction because my baby as IUGR ( growth restriction of abdominal area under 10th percentile) im already 40 w 3 days today so it’s know. The placenta isn’t that bible anyways towards the end this in addition to my baby that is already skinny it’s preferable to get him out.

She is clearly working on big pharmas behalf. The short answer is YES! Being induced period increases a womans chance of getting a c section greatly. NO medical intervention comes without risk. Interventions are good only when the benefits of getting them outweigh the risks of getting them. Make sure to weigh the risks yourself because a doctor (especially one that performs abortions) wont value your child's life the same way you do.
