I HAVEN'T WORKED ON ONE OF THESE BEFORE, ITS A ZV457MG9A NOT A ZV427MG9A POWER SUPPLY PROBLEM PART 1

On the bench today is a first, it's a ZV457MG9A, usually they are the ZV427MG9A's but this one is not much different, It's just a 427 with the addition of a digital ATSC tuner. Anyhow this one had a high ESR capacitor in the power supply and there will be a part 2 with the replacement of all of the DVD recorder capacitors. Don't forget to watch the bonus footage at the end.

The dreaded dirty mode switch. Once it gets dirty you got to take the VCR carriage off to get to it and clean the contacts. Seen this problem a lot .

I noticed when you clean the mode switch that you left some fibres behind you need to use lint free Q-Tips or cloth could be a problem in the future

It is a MUL3333. Got it from MAT electronics about 20 years ago. It is an Ebay find now.

Where did you get the schematic for this unit? I have one of these. It's a low hour unit with a damaged mechanical part in the VCR portion. Probably due to a mode switch that was dirty.

I have this unit too. The DVD would not load. I finally turned up the laser output and it loaded and played a disk but wont record. The caps you esr on the dvd board control that?

They can play a big part in it especially when recording. It has a higher current draw during recording and weak cap(s) could hinder it.

Your videos are excellent! You should be a teacher. Question: When you esr the surface caps you do not disconnect them from the circuit but with the power supply caps you do (at least that is what it looks like). Why is that?

The caps in the power supply are mostly configured in a pi network. Meaning there is an inductor between the 2 (or more) caps that will skew the results.

Google "analog ESR meter schematic" and you will find several diagrams.

The intended time use of these more modern electronics was estimated to be less than 10 years. So cheaper components were made to equal that time length. That is why stuff like , flat screen TV's VCR's and DVD players, are so damn cheap. Better to replace with a newer one and recycle the old one. That being said if you have a collection of personal stuff on VCR tapes you better keep that old VCR running in tip top shape! 👉🏻 They actually make cotton swabs with a 1/4 of the diameter of an ordinary Q tip.👈🏻 Very much recommend those for VCR repairs!👍🏻👍🏻

Instead Of Holding That Transport Tray Up With One Hand While You Try To Clean The Mode Switch With Only One Hand, Just Use A Tennis Ball To Hold It Open For You. The Tennis Ball Is Both Soft And Non Conductive.
