Time to talk about my lack of confidence I know this might be funny to some, but to some people this is real thing, Shouldn't have to hide it and just need that right type of support to deal with it and try learn of it.
I almost feel like i should give up riding as its taking me longer than i taught to learn!

Try doing slow speed maneuvers or drills in a open parking lot like figure 8s. Motojitsu has videos on some of these. You got this man, practice is all you need.

Here's something: Not a lot of people are willing to admit they've had shortcomings. They want to wait until they've nailed down a skillset, and insist it was always like that for them. You're showing honesty with yourself. I started riding just a few months ago, and you're right: It takes some time and practice. Although we don't have tiered licensing here in the US, the need to practice and improve basic skills enough for great confidence on the bike makes me understand a bit why tiered licensing exists in some places. OK, so here's a thing: I started thinking I was getting it, my confidence was improving, and I tried to take a nice long ride with some tight road turns on it. I messed up, I nearly caused a big issue in one turn, and it sapped my confidence. But here's where it leaves you: a decision. You can stay at your current skillset and just keep riding, hoping it works its way out. You can give up completely. You can have focused sessions of practice. That practice will bring your confidence. It took me a few parking lot sessions to start responding correctly, releasing the clutch a bit when I felt unstable rather than throwing a foot out. I've been replicating trouble areas on the street, in parking lots, to improve the skills in a controlled environment. You'll get there. I'll get there. I believe in you, and I have confidence in you. So, deep breath, friend. You've got this.

Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and message me with such detail! Yeah it was hard for me to open up specially on camera infront of people watching on KZfaq but hey I want to be real not scripted and have people go through my journey with me. The videos might be a bit delayed as I don’t want to overwhelm and post 4 videos a week. But I have been practicing and along with my head placement while looking it may take me a little bit but I’ll learn eventually

It takes a while to learn but is very rewarding. Keep going bro. I remember buying my bike 2 years ago and really regretting it a week after cuz I felt I couldn't ride. I was worried. I alnost spent $1000 cuz of scraped fairings. Now my bike is all sorts of banged up and I only replace scratched metal parts, each scratch on the fairing is a lesson learned. Just keep practicing, don't get too in your head, get smooth with shifting, always be aware. Learning new stuff is also really rewarding. Learning to rev match was my first real step after getting confident in riding safely. Riding is amazing. Breaks from riding are great too, as absencd makes the heart grow fonder

really appreciate you taking time to send this comment! and your 100% right, I just think at the start the first 4 months I did nothing but ride straight and I just taught myself the wrong ways first when If i spent that time instead at a car park and just practiced atleast U turns (Which I have a video coming soon and i do get frustrated!) but I am posting my real experiences so nothing sugar coated here, I have dropped my bike couple of times but once i build my confidence back up I should be fine *fingers crossed*

Ive been riding a few years here in the US, but only just took my class and got my license this past October. One of the instructors showed us something that changed my uturns for the better. On top of looking all the way through the turn, also keep a small bit of throttle always on and use your clutch to control acceleration, plus hold the rear brake lightly. Its amazing how much control that adds to the u turn.

Yes you can do this yourself. I can see that you don't really turn your head too much when you're turning. By the time you turn your bike around, you should already be looking at where you're headed. The bike is only an extension of you. If you can see it, you can do it! Head up Bro, you're not done in yet! Where your eyes go, the bike will follow. Ride safe m8!

Yo! Keep practicing man! I'm a new rider myself (Licensed in December 2023) and I also suck at U-Turns. I don't know all of the rules where you live, but I've been using empty parking lots to just practice low speed manouvers. Typically law enforcement wont mind if you're just doing that and being safe about it.

Something thats helped me has been letting go of worrying about dropping the bike. Now with the mindset if i drop it i drop it, suddenly turning etc is way better :) saying that my bike is definitely lighter than yours which would make a difference while learning

Drops will happen, and the first hurts the most. I've learned from a few mistakes, and my bike getting banged up a little has made me so comfortable doing my own work on it, which is not something I would say 2 years ago about my car before owning a bike. These machines are phenomenal and can help you learn about yourself and grow as a person. If you're out riding on the street and not being irresponsible, riding is for you. You've made it past where most people stop. Own that shit
@raimee81

As you said you can't blame the bike. HOWEVER. The type of bike you are on will definitely affect how you feel on it, especially when we're learning. I can bet if you were on an even smaller, lighter, upright seating bike where your feet are comfortably on the ground, your confidence to practice will be higher. When you get on another bike, there will be an adjustment period but hopefully by then you've ingrained fundamentals that will translate to any 2 wheeler. I started on a 500CC scrambler. High and wide handlebars and upright seating. The bike was a little heavy for it's class, but controlling that bike was much easier, than a lean forward sporty bike with narrower handles. I am now on a Suzuki GSX-R 600. Even with 6 months of riding under my belt, I was quite nervous riding it from the dealer. The ergonomics was very foreign to me. You can learn on any bike. But clearly some bikes are just easier to deal with than others. Cheers mate.

For me its all about where you are looking when doing u turns you want to be looking as far left or right as possible and trying to turn the bars as far as possible aswell. I was afraid of reving the bike to hard but my instructor told me its just noise and ignore it and keep a steady throttle. If you feel like you are going to slow and are going to drop the bike let the clutch out more. I was the same starting out but after about five months of riding it all suddenly clicked and now i find it easy. For you it might just be the case of needing more experience and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I’ve also started on a R3. The low speed tight turns I also found were quite tricky because of the clip on handles. Try lookup counter-steering videos and try it out in an empty carpark. When u understand how your bike reacts, you should be more comfortable leaning the bike. Would hate to see you give up bro, you got this.

I failed my first test back in 1999 it destroyed me for a few weeks but the next time I took my test, I literally thought "fuck it....they are just people too, and we all make mistakes" the next test I just rode well, like I knew I could and stopped feeling 'judged' , i passed with no faults. I do think the system of 'testing' is obsolete and should be changed now, we have the technology for it.

you're a good lad, you'll do it. Just stop believing that other people can hold the key to you doing this. Be confident, but not arrogant, be cheerful, be nice, make them like you. I'm sure you can do this matey, and if if goes tits up again, you dust yourself off, learn from it and try again. you've obviously ridden on the road for a while, just think "omg that twat should never have passed their test" when looking at the idiot which tried to kill you....then do better, make sure you are better than cagers 🙂 @@BroHypno

when it comes to you turns, you need to find a car park, and plenty of space, then push the bike away from you as you turn, it's a weird feeling t first, but you almost stay upright as you push the bike away. It's only something you can learn whilst doing it for yourself. But just keep going around in circles, both ways, until it clicks. Remember... "fuck it!" you will get this matey 🙂@@BroHypno

You are going wide because you seem to be looking at the ground in front of you and around your dash, keep your head up and look through the turn to where you want to be and not where you are. The bike will follow where you are looking. Target fixation is very common with newer riders. I've owned my 2021 R3 for three years now. Fantastic bike! did my Restricted and my Full on it and now take it to the track to get advanced training. Just keep practicing mate, things I practiced and kept conscious of was. Head Checks, My position on the road, slow speed maneuvers like U-turns and emergency breaking. Make sure you use your ABS from time to time, so you know how it feels, to get used to it. Also good progressive braking. You'll get there, it takes time and a lot of practice and patience. Have a look at some of MotoJitsu's Drills to get an idea for slow speed maneuvers. For Motorcycle Safety have a look at DanDanTheFireman. What area of NZ are you in?

Hey man, if you see this don’t sweat it unless you are going out and practicing u turns normal riding will never make you better at them. Get some frame sliders and drop your bike on them so you don’t freak out about it then go to an empty lot and just do it a hundred times. Most riders can’t do a good u turn after years so really don’t overthink it

I think you're too stiff on the bike, especially when you get nervous or insecure. On a cruiser you're lower to the ground and your body position makes it harder to tense up. On a sport bike you're higher up and it's much easier to stiffen your body. Your legs should be hugging the bike, your core should be stable, but your arms, shoulders, chest and neck should all be pretty relaxed when you're riding. Especially at slow speeds. I think you're awesome for showing your journey! Oh, and pretty handsome as well 😉
