I found possibly the most valuable rock of my life so far. I shouldn't really call it a rock. "Gemstone" is more appropriate, and I almost never use that word. If you'd like to visit Hogg Mine, here's their website for more information: hoggmine.com
- MERCH -
michigan-rocks.myspreadshop.com
- FACEBOOK -

- INSTAGRAM -
/ michiganrocksrob
- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

This is the cabbing machine I use:
kingsleynorth.com/kingsley-no...
- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.
rockshed.com
- AMAZON STOREFRONT -
I also have an Amazon storefront. This is where you can find other products you may have seen in my videos. As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn't cost you extra.

On Michigan Rocks you can join me on relaxing rock hunts in picturesque Michigan. I'll also show you how to polish rocks and teach you other lapidary techniques. New videos are posted every Friday and some Tuesdays. Subscribe now so you don't miss any upcoming videos!

Wow, great job! When they mined during WWII, they only wanted the large crystals to refine for metal. The grate they used was 6” x 6” square, and the tailings were everything that fell through that! I suggest you put it back in water for a few days to nullify that acid. The clear rose Quartz will star! I was there for a $200 Machine Dig and my 32’ RV got stuck! Chris pulled it out backwards with his truck! Glad you had such good luck!

I soaked it for a day in baking soda water after soaking it in acid. I think it's pretty clean now. I forgot about the star thing with the rose quartz. I have to read up on how to cut it properly. Thanks for the reminder.

You should be right at home with 18 degree weather Rob. Ha Ha. The needle frost frost was really unique. I wonder what phenomenon causes that. Congratulations on that monumental aquamarine find that’s wonderful. It’s about time you got a reward for all your efforts. I think I would have a blast at that place. Super video !!! 1:44

It hasn't been that cold in Michigan this winter! I was pretty cold in the morning but I warmed up after finding that monster aquamarine. I don't know if it's called hoarfrost, but we get frost that covers the trees here sometimes too. A couple weeks ago, my drive to church was absolutely amazing. There was thick, white frost on all the trees. When the sun hit it the right way, it just shone.

Great find, Rob! I love exploring and poking around pegmatites because they are so unique; no two are the same. I'll be visiting a few in June when I'm in New Hampshire. I had to grit my teeth a little though at Courtney's explanation of the pegmatite and beryl (aquamarine and beryl are the SAME mineral!) 🙄 Also, some of what you're calling quartz with the white lines "might" be feldspar (very common mineral in a pegmatite) with what are called exsolution lamellae. Easy way to check is their hardness is different; feldspar is softer than quartz.

I filled a twelve pound tumbler with some of this and opened it tonight. It was very fractured, so I didn't know what to expect. The tumbler starts 3/4 full and was barely 1/2 full when I opened it. Lots of little pieces that crumbled off the bigger stuff, and the more solid stuff was very worn down for only a week of tumbling.

Non fractured rose quartz from hog mine is known to star. Haven't heard mention of that on the video.

Ann mentioned that on our drive there. I guess I never mentioned it. There's some complicated way to cut it in order to show the star, but I haven't tried that yet. I don't think it all has stars though.

Hey Rob, I hope you and Nancy are out living your best life healthy and happy. Im loving my new hobby and enjoying all your video's.😎 I was wondering if you ever worked with moonstone or selenite? They are my favorite. I dont know if selenite can be tumbled?im pretty sure moonstone can. Anyways if you have any tips, I'd sure appreciate it.😊✌️💞

Nice I went to Hogg mine a few months ago. It’s only 2 hours away for me. Probably going back soon. Nice finds. 👍

If you ever visit Southern California, you should plan a visit to the Oceanview Mine in Pala, Indian reservation, northern San Diego Co. Great History with the mine. With your luck, who knows?

My 11 year old son's birthstone is aquamarine. I bought a rock about 1/4 the size of the big one you found. It's kinda the shape of a football. I cleaned it real good and put it in a vibratory tumbler with polish for about 10 days. I didn't want the shape to change so I didn't put in a rotary. It turned out aqua blue and shiny. He loves it.
