I'm not a metal worker so the disaster is probably my fault. 3rd try's the charm right? Regardless, HUGE thanks to EFII ( @flyefii4022 ) for helping us out with this part of the project. Their boost pump worked perfectly for our application and fit exactly where I wanted it. Come along as we put the final touches on our Lycoming IO-320I conversion. make an exoskeleton cage to hold it, my fuel selector, filter, AND @beringeraero parking brake.

J3 Cub. A plane barely alive. Gentlemen, Carl can rebuild him. He has the technology. Carl has the capability to build... basically a new plane. This J3 Cub will be that plane. Carl can make him better than he was before. Better. Stronger. Faster.

Faster part I'm not so sure of. The airframe has it's limits....

You could reinforce the base and the legs of the thinner aluminum by backing it with the thicker aluminum. It would make the assembly more rigid, which was the original intent with the thicker metal.

It actually turned out ridged enough in the end. I think I was going overkill. I'm worried about cracking over time, but we'll see how things roll with the vibrations of the plane.

Great video Carl. I've been following your channel for a while, and I really enjoy your content. However, I had to cringe a little when I watched you create your bracket. I've been working in and on aircraft structures from 1983 to 2012 when I went into engineering. If I may I'd like to give you some pointers for the future. 1. Always bend aluminum against the grain, otherwise it will crack and break, like it did. 2. the thicker the metal the larger the bend radius you will need (for 2024-T3, which is very common for aircraft use) .063 THK minimum bend Radius is 0.22. For that bracket, you could probably get away with using 2024-T3 .050 THK which the bend radius will be somewhere around 0.18. if you want a tighter bend radius you could go with 304 Stainless Steel .040 THK which you could probably get away with a .09 bend radius. 3. when you make a cutout in a piece of metal you should always radius the corners .125 min for outside corners and .25 min for inside corners. When you are flying, that bracket will be subjected to vibration, the tighter the inside radius, the more likely a crack will form. 3. After you have made your cutouts, bends and holes, you should also smooth the edges it will also help to keep cracks from forming especially in an inside radius. It will also keep anyone from cutting themselves on a sharp edge. I hope that helps and that I'm not overstepping my bounds. Cheers from Texas

Thank you! Not overstepping your bounds at all. I’ve made it clear I have no idea what I’m doing, learning a bunch as I go. Your info will help for sure, but I did do some of your suggestions before painting, just off camera. Sorry to make you cringe. 😬

I'd love to find a J3 and follow your path. This brings me to a question for you. Being that the J3 is a "rear solo" plane and you have mentioned in the video about the fuel pump placement (between you feet in the Front Seat) in the ac, I was wondering how did you CG the plane for a front solo, or is it all due to the much larger engine that you have? Or is this a "Clipped Wing" thing or? Thanks!

I did it with math. I removed a lot of weight in the front end, switched to wing tanks, and moved my forward seat aft 2.5 inches. It moved my CG well into the limits, although more forward. When calculating it again adding aft weight didn't change the CG much, probably because the engine is so big.
