There was another US company that built & sold motor homes from their Detroit plant. They started in 1963 to 1985. It was the Dodge Travco Motor Home.

Not the same thing, tho, since it was a Travco body on a Dodge chassis. If the entire thing was built by Dodge, then it would be comparable.

would not expect the facts. Thanks for sharing. I have found you can transaxle the cadillac FWD diesel, and the 6.5 to the old 455 transaxle in this motorhome. Amazing history. I personally like the winnebago on the truck frames...gm/ford/dodge motors .they are not bankrupt or whatever it is that guy said. you can even rebuild an old travco with dodge etc etc. if it has the big 3, you can keep it going with ingenuity and lots of new parts.

I love this video. It is really nice to see people out there who are preserving and supporting a piece of automotive history for future generations. I also own a vintage RV; a 1984 Fleetwood Pace Arrow Eleganza, and I can appreciate the responsibilities which comes with owning and maintaining these classic machines. It is definitely not for everyone but for the people who do own them they are irreplaceable.

I agree. It's a shame that they were discontinued when they were.

@@jasoncarpp7742 I believe it all boiled down to GM's profitability in making turnkey motorhomes. The bean counters of the day determined pickup trucks were more profitable so GMC motorhome production was axed. How ironic that almost 50 years later during the current UAW strike the auto industry is still defending pickups as their most profitable products.

@@Dadcam_Can Typical bean counters. All they seem to care about is making money and controlling spending. They don't seem to care about how popular a vehicle is or how good the craftsmanship is.

either this, or a couple other models from other makers such as Dodge that are older than this one and actually GMC somehow 'borrowed' if not stole the same idea from them although GMC did a much better job especially because this one's smaller than the other two AND better too!

So you got to know that these things were built to last respective to the body. Most Motor homes of that era have had their roofs replaced by now, if they survived at all. I think the Travco, GMC and I think there was one other that had the fiberglass roof/body designs that seems to hold off the elements better than the others. My 72 Winnebago had an aluminum roof that pitted from the inside do to the glue they used....had pin holes everywhere...replaced in in the early 80's.

I had a couple come up to me at MGMGMC, a renowned GMC shop in SoCal, headed by Miguel Mendez, THE GMC guru. This couple came by looked at my coach and sniffed; "Well... it's not a GMC". I responded;" No, indeed. There can only be ONE #1''. You see, Revcon asked for 60 Toronado stub frames a month which stirred GMC to play catch up and start their motorhome project fully two years after John Hall began Revcon production. I own a very early Revcon (71-0004), designed by the stepson of Wally Byam (yes, that Wally Byam) and the very first to design and produce a Toronado FWD motorhome. Sorry, but Revcons while using the very same drive train, are more durable, aren't as susceptible to rot. GMCs can sag from wood structure getting wet, then entry doors get sticky. Just saying. Revcons are all aluminum, weigh less and just don't rot away They don't require many thousands of dollars to rehab basic structural components. Like GMC, all engine, trans, brake and other things are readily available.

If only there were places like this all over the USA, where owners could take their Motorhomes for service, maintenance, and possibly upgrades. I'm from Washington state, nowhere near Florida.
