I have so many good memories at this camp site! Surfing all day. Campfire at night. Wake up and do it again.

Maybe my expectations are too low but I've camped in dirt with squirrels and ants and I just figured, "that's camping." I guess for me, roughing it is just part of the experience.

I've stayed here twice, and I had a great experience both times. No issues, quiet, the beach was just a short walk down the path, spots were spacious and separated by bushes and trees. Sleeping in typically isn't a thing to expect if you're at a developed campground in an urban area.

We love the San Clemente campgrounds! Ants, rabbits and of course the USMC bugles playing revile and taps are a part of our local culture. Just crack an icy cold beverage from your ICECO fridge and sit back in that comfy ICECO chair and you’re ready for the beach. Try Sonny’s Pizza next time. It’s a great local spot.

The things that people complain about when they are in NATURE...complaining about things that live in NATURE. Bees and squires??? Well...they can be annoying, but if you don't want to be around them, don't go outside in areas where they may be. lol

Stayed there last year with the Fam and friends after a day of surfing at Sano. I have been camping for decades and everywhere. This one broke me. I have no desire to ever go camping again. No bees, some squirls, and a bunch of people partying until 2am and urinating in a bush 8 feet from my tent. My 15 year old daughter's tent was next to us. I was up early the next day and made sure we made enough noise to wake those clowns up too. Forget that, I am staying in Marriott from here on out.

I camped there with my sons when they were young. I quickly filled up with Orange county teenagers who partied until there was a fight and the park ranger came and kicked them out. Besides that, it is so close to I-5 at times it sounded like every semi was driving through my tent. One star is generous if you are in a tent.

I've had some decent experiences at San Mateo, but I was in High School the first time so we probably were the problem but came back 20 years later with an RV and loved it, the atmosphere and weather. Signal sucks though and I like to edit and upload media while camping hahaha I know, doesn't happen often without starlink.

These are always so much fun to watch. That's like fifteen miles from my house and the wife and I always talk about heading there for a weekend. I used to surf at trails back in the day, and it really is a lovely stretch of coastline. Ah, the good old days. Thank you for the review!

It was quiet because of the Marines Ron at 96 for Fourth of July weekend. We go there sometimes it can get pretty loud between the helos and the artillery.

I live in San Clemente and my son works at the state park .Hapa J's is great hope you enjoyed our town .and surfing at trestels is a great surf spot I jus got out of the water .we do hear lots of big booms and guns in town here .fun vid thanks

Camped there off season with the family and it was the sketchiest anywhere we stayed in the country. Also served in the USMC and was stationed right next to those sites in the late 90’s.

The prices at CA State Beaches are ridiculous and the Reserve California website is infuriating. That said, the staff at the parks in this district have gotten SO much better in the last couple years or so.

We were there at the exact same time as you. That was my White Ram by the showers! 😆 Camp Cite 83. We brought our 4 teenager boys- don’t worry they sleep until noon if you let them. But they took off early in the morning to go surf. They were in a tent and we were in our trailer. One of my boys found like 20 shower tokens! We go every year I love the sound of freedom from Camp Pendleton! The price is steep I agree.

It’s even more expensive in nearby Dana Point Doheny Beach where everyone is on top of each other. May be in front of the beach but far from ideal if you want a relaxing campsite!

Hapa J's used to be better when it originally opened. Now, it's on 3rd owner 😂! The only safe bet there to eat is the Kahlua Pork Nachos and any type of alcohol!

So glad I just found your channel! I don’t get people bitching about the critters , we put up trail cams around our site just to enjoy the wildlife that comes out while we are asleep. Give Half Moon Bay a shot if you enjoy beaches, just know their are 0 barriers between you and your neighbors not even a single tree 😂 Henry Cowell is pretty good if you want the surrounded by tree experience with large sites.

Bought an ICECO refrigerator for future car camping. Love it. Would not mind having a free chair. San Onofre State Beach is further south past the nuclear power plant. Use to camp there in my youth. Hikes to the beach is more challenging. Did you mean “Trestles” instead “Trenches”?

We were there a couple of weeks ago, had a great, we liked the campground, but my glass is half full,,not half empty

I really enjoy your 1 star campground reviews !! I've stayed at this campground MANY times & I absolutely love it. It just blows my mind how critical people are when reviewing these campgrounds. From complaints of ants & bees to roaming thieves stealing electronics. 2 pro tips for the ones who are slow on the uptake... #1 - when you are camping, expect to see & hear things often seen outside; insects & rodents to name two. duh..... #2 - do not leave any belongings unattended that you don't want taken. If you wouldn't leave an item out on the sidewalk in front of your house bc someone might take it, then don't leave it out at your campsite. again, duh..... Now about the unflushed toilets...... I recently was camping with a friend of mine who has school aged kids & my friend asked the kids when they came from the bathroom if they had flushed then she would go check the bathroom herself to make sure they flushed. So I was like "hey, what's with the flushing?" and she informed me that kids often don't flush toilets in public bc the sound is too loud & scary to them. I was satisfied with that answer bc it seems logical to me. In that scenario, hopefully parents will be more proactive & confirm the flush actually occurred. Problem solved. Question....were you able to get a cell signal at that campground? The last time I visited I couldn't get a signal on Verizon nor AT&T so i'm curious if you had better luck. THANKS!

I’ve camped at San Mateo twice - both times were awesome - Campsite 141 and then 135 - anywhere along the East side (spots 123 to 139 (outside spots only) are the best in the park The only animals I saw were a few birds, rabbits and a scorpion crawled right through the middle of my site

Just was there 2 weeks ago. Not a really nice camp site but wasn’t nasty. Saw mice saw rabbits a few ants but not horrible. IT’s camping!. Cool beach walk. Left wood speaker out at night nothing stolen

Glad you reviewed this place, I've driven past it on the drive out to Anza Borrego before and was wondering if it was nice or not. Side note about the bees, they do tend to be seasonal. It's like the peak of summer that they become a problem in general so I'm wondering if the reviews you read were for a specific time of year. Like as of mid July the bees are pretty active and desperate for water now but I'm not sure how early July was there. Honestly bees suck but they mostly leave you alone if you leave them alone. They can crowd you for water sometimes.

We stayed here 3 weeks ago. We liked it overall, but did hear lots of machine guns from the base nearby! You had to really consider what you were hearing to realize it was machine guns though. It really wasn’t that loud to us. We left lots of stuff out and none were stolen. It was nice enough honestly! Had to pay 10 bucks to use the dump station, that was annoying. And they sold diatomaceous earth at the camp host, I am assuming to help with the bugs… I had never seen that before! I agree with 4 stars.

This place did not have grass 10 years ago. The military does not always have war simulation, but when it does. The percussion noises are very noticeable. I hope you visited San Clemente State Beach Campground, above where you parked.

San Clemente State park campground has far fewer rabbits but you can't hear the trumpets FYI, both campgrounds do have solid ground with which to plant your ICECO chair on.
