I’m a store manager for a McDonald’s in New Jersey and as far as these Taylor ice cream machines go, the ones that Taylor supplies McDonald’s are a McDonald’s specific machine. They are rather complicated for an average crew member to understand, or even most shift managers if not all of them. But coming from someone who has been cleaning and replacing parts for them for about 10 years, the machine is very complicated. It’s required to be cleaned every 14 days, and once it has reached the 14th day on the digital count down, the machine will then completely lock itself, rendering it inoperable until it has fully been cleaned. But the problem with that is barely no one knows how to clean it. At most locations you’re lucky if more than one person knows how to clean it. But once the machine is cleaned (which if done correctly it takes about 4-6 hours to complete) the machine will turn back on, while it’s true that the ONLY company that can work on the machine is TAYLOR, i don’t know of any specific thing stating that a McDonald’s employee can’t clean it. But there’s still one more thing. How come the machine goes down more often than 14 days? Well that’s because every night (if the McDonald’s is not a 24 hour location) the machine has to be filled up with the ice cream mix at a very specific level because it goes through what’s called a “heat treat cycle” or heat mode. And in order for the machine to come out of heat mode, it must be at the right temperature within a certain time frame, and if the mix isn’t filled up properly, it will never come out of heat mode until that’s done properly. But the good thing is, the organization i work for is beginning to switch out machines to a new company (i don’t know it off the top of my head)

If the machines are like this, then surely the solution is simply for restaurants to have 2 or more of them, and just using them one at a time until they need cleaning and then switching to the next one? Each location should just have however many are needed to ensure there is usually a freshly cleaned spare one ready to go into action. Then when the maintenance engineer comes by he can just clean all the machines at once. Presumably the limiting factor in cleaning these machines efficiently is the travel time between locations, not so much the time it takes to actually clean an individual machine. Therefore, by having multiple machines at each location, each maintenance engineer can get much more done in a day, and icecream is actually available to customers. This really shouldn't be a difficult problem to correct, even if genuinely the machines cannot be made more reliable or easy to use (which I'm not sure I believe)... it's totally possible to work around this problem with a little bit of investment and organisation. The fact that McDonalds seem completely incapable of solving this for so long, does somewhat suggest that they either plain don't care, or worse are encouraging it for some reason.

McDonald's has no choice, there isn't a better machine built than the Taylor soft serve machines they have. The biggest problem McDonald's has with their machines is that their employees turn over so fast they can't keep people trained properly on machine operation, cleaning and maintenance so they break down.

Him saying that he could physically remove tyler is incorrect and can actually put him under disciplinary action as the only thing we are permitted to do is call the police upon trespassing, the reason a security guard is following you is to keep eyes on you. Bouncers ≠ Security That being said, the footage is heavily edited. Thus its difficult to tell what actually happened due to the cuts made, however our job is still to act cordial even under high stress situations. Its actually ironic, cops can speak and act as they want but us rent a cops are just eye candy, or outsourced desk jockeys that can be carted out to a new (often times lower pay) location when we speak an ounce of our mind or even act out of stress. There is a lot more to this story for what I've heard. The ice cream machine can "broke" down overnight bc something went wrong with the nightly "heat treat cycle" the problem is the machine don't tell what went wrong and the manual goes often inevitably to the "call the repair person" which is Taylors employee. There was a guy who invented an device which would tell what went wrong and could read the error codes but they (mcdonalds or taylor) made up some bad excuse about how the machine isn't acurate and they can't use it bc it is not approved by them or something.. Ultimatly the one who suffers most is are the owners of those mcdonald location restauraunts bc they have to pay for the repair guy to come and fix the machine.
@chilltarts
@chilltarts 6 ай бұрын
So now the question is why did McDonald’s choose to go with Taylor specifically to produce these ice cream machines and if they know about this problem why are they not doing anything to correct it? It seems like they simply don’t care because the extra expense is being passed off to the franchise owners. So was there a personal relationship between the person at McD’s HQ who coordinated the contracts saying franchises had to purchase icecream machines only from Taylor? 🤨 dum dum duuummmm 😂

I was one of 3 people who could clean the ice cream/Milkshake machine in a 24/7 McDonalds in Birmingham, uk (approx 20 years ago). The machine genuinely used to take me just over 7 hours to clean, disinfect and reassemble. I will me 4 12 hours hifts of shadowing another crew member and taking massive amount of notes/drawing parts associated with the process. To dismantle and reassemble the machine it had to be done in a very specific order and a diary few of the parts are of similar size and shape, so there was a moulded tray with each moulded space needing the specific pieces to be placed in it (a bit like a puzzle tbh). Kind of similar to that you would find in a school woodshop/jail woodshop or well organised joiner/machine based engineer so as to ensure no tools went missing. Having 3 of us most likely saved the franchise owner god knows how much as the others and I were on minimum wage (I was earning just under £5 per hour because I was 18). The only time I know engineers were called were annually for servicing and if the machine had fundamentally broken down and beyond a simple clean (well kinda for those who knew what we were doing cleaning wise😂). I had no idea that it was common for most McDonalds branches not to do this - though I suppose a high turnover of staff makes it difficult to continue as many are manned by younger crew members who moved on to better things. I worked there for almost 4 years for 30 hours per week in-between my studying at university because the hours were flexible and I liked the regular customers and fellow staff members (well mostly lol😂). It makes total sense though why Taylor's would want to make their venture as complex and profitable as they can possibly do by cornering the market.

I've been in refrigeration Sales and Service for 20 years. Taylor is the best soft serve machine made and they still break down all the time for many reasons, the number one reason is because you have a very sensitive $35k-$45k machine run by $10/hr employees who abuse it by not cleaning it properly, not drying parts properly after sanitizing, not changing the product when it has been in the machine too long, not lubricating the o-rings, not putting the machine back together properly after cleaning etc. I've worked on every model and every major manufacturer...Taylor, Electro Freeze, Stoelting, SaniServ, you name it I've worked on it or sold it. The machines work in a hot environment trying to get various product with varying amounts of butter fat to freeze to a very specific temp and then try to hold it at that temp for extended periods of time while not over folding the product or adding too much air. They require a lot of maintenance to stay in operation.

I worked at A&W for years. We also were supplied Taylor ice cream machines. Ours would have problems too. What would happens is you fill the machine with liquid ice cream and then the internals will spin slowly and freeze the ice cream as it comes out. We ran into various problems. Sometimes mid summer when we’d be really busy our icecream machine couldn’t keep up and we were selling more icecream faster than our machine could freeze it. Other times the freezing mechanism would stop working and it would only mix around the liquid for hours without freezing it. Then we have the good ol cleaning cycle. Ours was weekly. I was actually part of the maintenance with that and every Friday night after closing we’d shut down the machines and allow them to defrost so Saturday mornings two hours before we opened the machine would be broken down into its pieces, cleaned and sanitized and put back together. It took about an hour to clean the machine, sometimes longer if there was a ton of ice buildup and it would take even longer to re freeze the ice cream. Specially if it was a hot day and our kitchen was exceptionally hot that day. Then the machines daily would shut down, and cycle themselves to prevent severe ice build up so the machines wouldn’t seize. But this was programmed to happen after closing/in the middle of the night. We run into issues too. My McDonald’s always has there icecream machine working. So I’m not speaking for McDonald’s but the ice cream machines are quite efficient overall but we were a smaller restaurant that got most of our business in the summer months when we’d get travelers and sometimes our machine couldn’t keep up, now imagine a McDonald’s who gets thousands of customers per day?

I work at McDonald’s myself and honestly are machines are just constantly down because of lots of reasons. The main one for our place is that when we start serving too much ice cream (which we do) it heats up too much and stops coming out. I don’t really think there’s much more behind it.

I was a tech who worked on these machines . The reason is actually explained pretty well in a managers comment that appears at the top. I'm not a fan of Mcdonalds or Taylor (as in I was not skilled enough and fired). But Taylor does actually make great machines. (the best slushies at circle K, frostys at wendy's...mcdonalds ice cream, tim hortons ice caps etc.) The reason Mcdonalds has issues and wendy's, circle k (ok they do lol) and others doesn't? They don't try to run a machine for 14 or 28 days and do a nightly heat cycle to try to kill bacteria. It's really that simple. A machine can fail a heat treatment cycle (it takes hours) for a wide variety of simple operator errors which then for health safety reasons locks the machine out. Even if Taylor makes money from service....Trust me, coming from a man who has seen behind the scenes and doesn't even like these companies. There is no intentional conspiracy here to inflate costs, if that were true..i'd be gladly uncovering that truth. But it is not true. Taylor is a good company blessing us with our favorite frozen beverages lol. Mcdonalds is meh.

My brother works as a repairman for McDonald ice cream machines. He says 99% of the time the machine breaks is because employees don't clean the machine properly. Most of employees are young, haven't been given any instruction how to clean the machine, don't care or don't feel like cleaning it. See the guy at the beginning of the video saying he just doesn't want to bother with making an ice cream order?! That's why the machine doesn't work half the time, they don't care. Fact of the matter is, Most places that serve soft served ice cream use the same machines as McDonald, and their machines work just fine. Reason being that it's a lot less expansive for someone working for himself to just clean and maintain his machine rather than cough up 500$ for an 1 hour repair job.

So essentially, there are intervals on how much Mcdonald's is allowed to sell ice cream without cleaning the machine, so they have to wait for the machine to be cleaned by a specific employee. It usually takes time for said employee to arrive, and label the machine as useable. The reason this rule is in place is because mcdonald's used to never clean their machines, and it would be a health code violation.

Yeah, this was garbage. Making personal jabs at people, yelling at them calling them killers, a coward and telling the guy "you can try" when he was asked to leave quite nicely? No investigating here. Just a kid getting into unnecessary confrontations and blaming a business for something he heard on TikTok and some kids? Hell, one employee said they just don't want to do it, but that was ignored because it didn't fit the agenda.
