My friend Jay and I decided to see what was the deal with the Korean cult members that like to approach people. Here's the inside scoop of what happens when you go with them!

If you watch Korean contents and stuff, they do talk about this. They will warn you that if you go to Korea, you have to avoid these types of people. Near clubs also. Some clubs will try to force you into the club to attract more guys (not sure if this is still a thing). Same with Japan (especially in certain areas). Koreans are generally very reserved, they will almost never approach you first unless they want to practice their English or get you to join their cult (it’s usually the later). And this does not only apply to Korea. There are scams, cult, kidnapping group, etc. that target foreigners every where you go. I have seen people following and trying to sell me stuff when I traveled to a SEA country. My friend and brother got robbed in France. My auntie also got robbed in America that landed her in the hospital. The bottom line is be careful, do research, and try to blend in as much as possible.

In my experience, there are only three types of Koreans who will directly approach a foriegner: 1. Students (any age) wanting to practice English 2. Tipsy or drunk adults 3. Cult members wanting to "internationalize" their cult/religion. Koreans are generally reserved and won't talk to strangers unless the stranger approaches them. Then they will gladly help them, especially foriegners who are seen as guests in their country. I am an American who lived for 3 years in Daegu, South Korea.

My Korean ex was not into religion at all. Somehow this group got her to start bible studying which at first I thought was kinda cool because she had never done that before. She said they were super nice and seeing them was helping her a lot. Well she also had a trip to California coming up. The bible study members started begging her to not go on her trip. It would be like a 7 day trip so that was weird, but they probably didn’t want there to be a break in her “bible studies.” When she got off the bus one day, some random lady she had never met ran up to her and said she had a vision of a plane she was on crashing. It freaked my ex out at the time and she even questioned going to CA. We realized it had to be connected to the cult. She stopped seeing them and of course the plane ride to CA was fine.

I got approached by 2 male University students when I was staying at a hotel in Yeongdeungpo. It was back in 2018. They said they were doing a research with tourists. And they wanted to invite me to show me Korean culture. I was travelling solo. So I politely declined their invite despite them talking to me so long at Starbucks next to my hotel. They even showed me pictures of foreigners who were dressed in Korean costumes at their so called cultural event. The contents of the conversation was similar to what this girl said. Hahaha...

I travelled to Korea back in 2019 and got stopped in Hongdae on my way to a shop and started talking to these people for so long. Once they asked me to go back with them to dress in Hanbok, I immediately declined and said I had somewhere to be. Didn't take any notice in it until a couple minutes later when another couple approached me asking the same question "Do you know where Stylenanda is?" (ironically this was the shop I was going to hence why I fell for it the first time). I ignored them thinking "that's odd, I've been asked that twice.." but still brushed it off. Later that evening I was coming out of McDonalds and overheard the same conversation with another Korean couple and some tourists. It's only when I got back to my hotel I looked it up and came across all this information on the cults - not something people know about when travelling to Korea but definitely need to be cautious of.

I encountered the Shincheonji cult members here in Australia. They seem so friendly & welcoming which was so unusual as most Korean ppl tend to keep to themselves and aren't as friendly/warm/outgoing; so I should of took note of the overly inviting/welcoming attitude at first lol, but tbh I just wanted to make friends & met new people. This was all over 3 years ago. I still have mental PTSD/scarring from the experience lol. Turns out they are still operating/active today in 2023 as my friend got approached by them a few months ago.

In 2017 I was approached by people like this so often in Sinchon and Hongdae that one day I decided to find out what cultural event they were talking about. But first I had them pay for my coffee and cake at a coffee shop where we sit down and I had them tell me about the event before I said I’d go with them. I messaged a friend what I was doing but didn’t worry too much 😅 the event you describe sounds exactly like the one I attended though mine seemed to have involved a lot more bowing. I remember my legs hurting like hell on the following day 😂 after the ceremony we ate the food while sitting at those small tables and talking about fortune and how well I’m doing and how well I and my family could be doing. When they started to ask me about my job, income and my parents work, I said I need to go to work and they let me go without any issue, just asking to stay in touch for setting up a new meeting to improve my fortune and well being through idk payment or praying via kakaotalk. I just blocked them after a few days and never saw them again :)

I have met people in 신천지, the cult mentioned in this video at least 3 times. I am a christian to so when I met them at first o tell them that. And I also told them I am already attending a church here in South Korea. ( they usually get a little disappointed when I tell them I already attend a church) then they will say not to tell the people at my church about them and just listen to the service. I actually listened to them online for 3 sessions but they keep pushing to meet more often 3 days a week 4days a week. So I stopped listening. But in the end I just end up blocking them. (Also usually when they first meet you they keep saying they are not a bad person and like to show you a video. But do t worry if you know this it can be pretty obvious when it'd a cult

Sad to say that there are still some people who are susceptible to this kind of manipulation and persuasion. if you're depress, going thru something and need comfort yeah I would you say are vulnerable. But it's 2023, people should be smarter now...
@vixxcelacea2778
@vixxcelacea2778 Жыл бұрын
It's not about intelligence. It's that it's preditization. They seek people out in financial issues, emotional issues, vulnerable ages. It's a head hunt, just (usually) with out physical death, though that happens too. All cults operate that way. And they rely on the "easier to tell a lie if there is a little truth to it." We're not good at reading people. People say "follow your gut" but we're easily over ridden as a species by emotional manipulation. Advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry. It's easy to manipulate people. Often the ones who think they are immune are even more likely to be manipulated. You can be educated to look for red flags, but you can still fall for them. Humans aren't very logical creatures, even though we take great pride and comfort in it, it's only a small weak part of our brains. This particular cult is a doomsday one that believes the founder is the new messiah. It's pretty standard and a common thread in many cults.

I look like I dine with Satan, so no one has bothered with nicely inviting me while I was studying/visiting in Korea (but I got harassed and insulted by the freaks alright). It happened to me outside of Korea though, by a Korean person I knew from my university. On the other hand, my classmate from my school in Korea is one of those people who went to the "cultural event" with two guys who did chat her up and upon realising it's a cult meeting, she tried to leave but they locked the place and didn't let her until few hours later. Btw. I have a degree in Krn studies, did a lot of research on old religions in Korea, esp. Korean shamanism, wrote a thesis about it and that ritual you went through has absolutely no historical basis. The cults just take a lot of inspiration from all religions and then they create a chimera.

This happened to me so often.. One time in Incheon I was outside a convenient store and two old ladies ran up to me. Complimenting me, the worker came out and scolded them and told them to F off. Another time in hongdae. My friends mom came to Korea so we were looking for hotels. We talked about it to someone who worked in the convenient store. He called someone he knew. His pastor. I kept telling my friend and her mom it wasn’t safe and it was a cult and we shouldn’t. So when the paster came in a large black car. We knew then and said no. He was so pushy and said he owned an Airbnb. We ran away. Another time in hongdae I got asked to do a normal survey. I did it and she gave me some snacks and I walked away. She wanted to talk more or she seemed upset but I ignored.. I just thanked her and said I did the survey and was busy. Another time in the subway station two people approached me. Complimenting me and telling me they worked for a clinic and wanted me to go visit. Sat beside me on the subway. Gave a business card not related to a clinic. Followed me when I got off and asked to eat dinner together. I refused and the whole walk home kept looking behind me. There’s been soo many more crazy situations but they will do and say anything to you

@@OliverNorth9729 You give it anyway because cults are designed so that they become your family, friends even lovers. They foster intense emotion bonds through abuse tactics (honey moon phasing, love bombing, ostracizing, withholding of affirmation and affection) and encourage you to give to their "good" cause and help those who are all in this together. It totally messes with the persons head. Some who have gotten out have talked about how a cult financially ruined them into extreme debt, some committing suicide or homeless. The cult will usually encourage you to take loans and/or borrow from family. Eventually the person in a cult loses their actual family and becomes with out money. Depending on the cults aims, they might take you in and take care of you, if you follow their rules, or drop you like a moldy hot potato.

I knew it was dangerous but like, I had nothing better to do. I did the drawing thing and the reading was actually really accurate. Their belief was about the energy you put out into the world, they said a pile of shit will attract flies but a flower attracts butterflies. If you put out negative energy you will have bad experience, but if you put out positive energy, good things will happen. They told me a way to bring positive was this ritual to honor your ancestors They asked for money to buy food, I came them 10,000 won ( like 9 USD) They then gave me a Hanbokand taught me the ceremony. They has a special room just for it. Everyone in the house were wearing Hanbok and preparing the food together. Then we did the ritual. It was late at night so they walked me to the train station. Gave me the food. And yeah

I got approached twice in one day back in 2019. I was alone in Hongdae. They said the same thing, they have an event and it's about Korean culture. I usually don't trust strangers no matter how nice they are, so on those meetings I just wanted to escape right away. I declined repeatedly no matter how much they were persuading me. Really interesting and bit scary.

i usually never stop when ppl, especially young ppl in the day time come up to me when I'm in Korea. Back in 2018 when I was killing time before my flight home, I was shopping in Hongdae and a guy and girl came up asking directions to the One Piece cafe. tbh I only stopped to help them because I thought they were tourists too, they didn't have the typical "Korean" look, if that makes sense. Since I had a few hours, I offered to take them there, but they were so adamant that I don't lol They tried to get me to go with them for at least 20 minutes, just talking in the middle of the street. I offered to go to a coffee shop to talk coz it was hot af but they just kept trying to get me to go with them. Said the same stuff, like I would do some cultural Korean stuff, learn manners etc. Knew it was a cult when they started asking me to go to their 'traditional culture' thing, instead of me taking them to the cafe they first asked directions for. I've had a friend blindly go with ppl who approached her , she wanted to make Korean friends and was excited about it, only for her to end up paying like 50,000won after the whole thing, they pretty much forced her to pay "for respect" or some shit.

Yeah they catch people with 'cultural events' or normal looking 'bible studies' and after some time they start telling you about how God talked to their leader directly and made him the new messiah

It's so weird too, because that's what a LOT of cults do. There sure are a lot of messiah's in seems. But of course, this one, this one is the real one, not the others. Just like this god is the right god, but not that one.

I apologize beforehand for the huge post, but I just wanted to share my experience regarding cult approaches. A few months ago and was approached by 2 korean girls that asked me if I wanted to hear the word of Jesus... I had time and thought it was just going to be the usual preaching and blessing yadda yadda yadda so I said sure, why not. After they read some bible verses and pretty much quizzed me to know if I was understanding what they were telling me, one of the girls told me I was ready to be reborn and get rid of my all of my sins through baptism and they had the exact same method as the people in the video, they want you to go with them at that exact moment and tell you they will give you food, and for the baptism you'll change your clothes into a robe, probably like a hanbok, and get baptized in a pool. Of course I wasn't buying any of that and they were super pushy, so I said I had a medical appointment at 1pm (it was around 12pm), and I told them I couldn't be late for it, so I couldn't go with them. They tried to convince me saying it would be easy and quick and it wouldn't take much of my time if I decided to go at that moment, then when they realized I really wasn't budging, they said let me get your number and call you after your appointment so we can take you to our church... I was way too nice back then and couldn't exactly walk away of that situation, but I also wasn't that dumb to give them my number, so I started saying the numbers and inverted the order on the last three... after typing all the numbers, this girl CALLED THE NUMBER AND LOOKED AT MY PHONE TO SEE IF IT WOULD RING💀💀. I swear I didn't breathe for a good 30 seconds and I said "Oh! That's my mom's number!". I look fairly young, so it's very believable that I'm still underage. They asked me if I was underage and I said "Yes, I'm 16" lol. Then they asked for my actual number, called it, saw it ring on my phone and sent me a text message to confirm again that it was my number. At that point all I wanted to do was escape from them, so I said "I'm sorry, I have to go! See you guys later haha" and I fled from that area as fast as I could. Don't worry, I blocked the number from my phone and I never heard from them ever again. They also gave me a card with their church's name and address so I could go there after my "medical appointment" and when I googled the location it genuinely looked like a warehouse, but their website was all targeted towards foreigners. Anyways, it was an L and I shouldn't have paid attention to them in the first place, good thing is that I didn't go with them but props to Jackson for having the balls to go, I would be terrified lol. It's a really good video to bring awareness to the cult groups that are everywhere, not just in Korea... My experience was in Brazil, but they had the same approach. Be careful everyone!

More importantly y’all both should of shared y’all location on the phone to be safe. 2 you should of not gone for their ritual in their cult because they probably using you as a sacrifice or doing some kind of summoning that something (unknown being like demon or monster) is following now…. I’m just saying….

Cults work through emotional manipulation. They target people who are desperate, alone, feel disenfranchised or otherwise out of place. They offer love, affection, validation and praise (so long as you follow their rules, which are usually bizarre, specific and involve losing everyone in your life not correlated to the cult directly) which is highly potent for people that come from a culture in which often familial structure is highly critical and self-serving. It's truly awful. It's such a perversion of having friends and family that actually care about you and want what's best and don't limit your experiences and sense of self. I think if you used them and weren't in a position in which the abuse tactics worked on you, they'd seek retribution and go after you, depending on if your using them was damaging to image, finances or personal feelings to you. I wouldn't fuck with cults. The main game players (leaders and top followers) are usually pretty damn unhinged and lacking morals.
