I would like to see you do a restoration project with a group of veterans. A project like this could help vets deal with PDSD. There is a lot of talent and skill going to waste out there.
@bushranger51
@bushranger51 2 жыл бұрын
You're right about that, there's a lot of Vets with aircraft experience that would like to get their hands on projects like these, just for the thereputic value alone. The Aztec and 310 wouldn't take much to restore, while the Bonanza with it's issues should be saved for its historical value alone. These three aeroplanes deserve to fly again.

But at least 5 gallons of Greased Lightning degreaser. It won't damage the paint in any way and dirt will just flow off. Wet the birds down then pour the GL 25,% (or more) / 75% water mix into a pressure washer and spray them down. Restaurants use it to clean walls, ceilings and floors around deep fryers. I've used it for years cleaning pool table in bars and you wouldn't believe how filthy they get.

The thing I remember about the exhaust on that model of the 310 was that there was a corrosion issue on the spar that was created by that exhaust system. I don't know if there was an AD on it or not. I am no longer a pilot but I have held the controls on both an Aztec and a 310. My favorite was the 310 but the Aztec with turbos will probably perform better at altitude although be a little thirstier. The interior on the Aztec looked great!

I got my multi in a 310A. The over wing exhaust surprised me. On my first night flight I found out that sparks come flying out of the exhaust! I also found out that leaving the retractable landing lights down reduces cruise by about 25m.p.h.! Great flying airplane though. A friend ended up purchasing another 310A a few years later. I helped overhaul the right engine and installed some radios in it. For my help, he let me fly it for fuel. Even though gas was $1.50/gallon then, at 25 g.p.h., it was too expense to go very far. I already had my own Apache that burned less fuel and was STCed for auto fuel. I loved the way it flew. It took a few minutes to not over control in roll with all that fuel weight out in the tips.

I first fell in love with the 310 when Sky King replaced his original T-50 Bobcat (Songbird) with the 1957 310B (Songbird II). As a kid I thought the design was so neat, but the tip tanks really drove us all nuts. I have loved the 310 since those days. While flying various makes/models over the years, I have never had the opportunity to fly a 310. :(

I took my ATP ride in a '56 C-310 with the "tuna tanks". It was based at Titusville and Arthur Dunn for awhile. Thanks for the memories! It was a great bird but quite lackluster when compared to the R model which I flew about 1000 hours in, doing night freight in upstate NY. The R could really haul ass, it never had any CG issues and boy could it carry a load of ice. All the freighters would race into TEB around midnight and usually the 310R's would land first. You had to know just how far you could push it before pulling up to bleed off speed and slowly reducing power without cracking any jugs. I flew the 402 and 404 also but the 310R was always my favorite!!

Especially on a twin, always test the throttle, mixture and prop controls. The long control cable runs on a twin will often seize up, and replacing those cables is both expensive, and a huge amount of work! On the old 310's the exhaust augmenters are LOUD! I learned to fly before headsets were a thing and the old 310 was so loud it would make you physically ill. lol! The only AD I know of is 50 hours inspections of the exhaust system. So on oil changes check out the exhausts as well. There used to be an STC to change the nacelles/exhaust to be like the newer ones (wing lockers and bottom exhaust. ) I would never do it to get the wing lockers but to quiet the things down... Of course, we all wear headsets now and a good set of noise-canceling sets might not make it worth the effort anymore????
@therealjimmysworld
@therealjimmysworld 2 жыл бұрын
That STC was just for noise reduction? not anything to do with heat issues?
@robjohnson8522
@robjohnson8522 2 жыл бұрын
@@therealjimmysworld Well I am sure there are many benefits to that mod. I think the main appeal is actually the storage space. When I was flying one back in the early 80's the LOUD was the major problem we had with plane. We had no exhaust issues back then. So if *I* was to spend money on the STC it would be to solve the problem I actually had. ;) So 40 years later what I remember of that plane was that it was a sweet flying fast climbing bird that gave you a headache the rest of the day after flying it! lol With all that said I think the newer bottom exhaust 310's have a corrosion issue AD where the underwing exhaust let corrosive residue buildup and corrode the trailing edge spar... EDIT: Found this ... "(6) The 1965 J-models were the first with the under-wing exhaust. These planes are a little quieter than the over-wing exhaust. But… the placement of the exhaust pipes pumps a lot of exhaust gases into the wheel wells and flap area. You might want to spend a little time keeping those areas clean to avoid corrosion problems later."

@@therealjimmysworld It's more than just noise reduction. Over-the-wing exhaust encourages corrosion in the skins over which the exhaust flows. There was an STC to move the exhaust below the wing, moving some noise away from the cabin while preserving the aft top of the wing.

That Aztec was a nice aeroplane when it was parked. Stormscope, digital engine monitor, full panel... and Aztecs can lift a ton of weight - super useful, even if very agricultral with their exposed struts.

Wow, I used to see these planes at Rock 9G1 all the time. I even climbed inside that Bonanza once when it used to sit down closer to the runway. Last I know, and this was a couple years ago, there a few hulks sitting over at Pittsburgh-Monroeville 4G0. I believe the airport owner is trying to sell the land for housing development but is having trouble with zoning issues. Now would probably be the time to try to get in there before it's sold off and the planes are scrapped out.

The Bonanza was last run on the ramp in 2014. They asked drain and use some fuel from my plane. They put about three Gallons in and a fresh charged battery- it did start right up.

What I've been doing on 'found' planes, is to fix the obvious broken systems, rudder, pedal, flaps etc. on earth then have a friend up to a 'cloud port' of which I keep several in good weather at altitudes ranging from 1k to 3k in weather which is stable for a week or so. Then pilot the plane back to earth in glide mode. Once you are cmfortable with the glane and it doesn't 'fight' you (you know that when it might happen, add power. Engine work varies with each plane. Get your new friend up to 95 stable power. Depending on the plane, electronics may or may not work, you should establish how much but don't depend on it for early flights. Quickly you can resume your work and test flights on earth. Trust me, it's mush easier than trying to get a ride to the cloud where you airplane awaits. Keep up with the super videos!

Looking forward to seeing all the content. Kind of wonder when he found out the airport was going to be cut off why not fly the airplanes out while you could get them parked at a different location and then figure out what to do with them then rather than let them get trapped. Perhaps none of them we're really airworthy even then.

BY BROTHER FOUMD AN OLD NAVY TRAINER SITTING OUT DOORS FOR YEARS, IT WAS AN OLD CLOTH AND WOOD FRAME WITH A HUGE ENGINE. WE HAULED IT ON A HAY TRAILER HOME AND HE WORKED ON THAT PLANE FOR FIVE YEARS AND HE FLEW IT IN THE FRENCH BOTTOMS OF THE MISSOURI RIVER. HE SOLD IT TO A RANCHER MAKING A VERY HEALTHY PROFIT. HIS EXPERIENCE WAS A MODEL AIRPLANE BUILDER.

The 310 should fly again! My 40 year flying career included, after flying helicopters in the army, a lot of twin Cessna and Aztec time early on. Both are good multi-engine training birds among other service. Good luck with your projects. I am sure I crossed paths with those two as the majority of my flying was PA based east coast flying.

The augmentor tubes allowed condensation to form inside the trailing edges of the wing. The AD eliminates the tubes and a newer style 310 exhaust system is used. I have always loved flying the 310s, and the sound of the exhaust from the tubes is fantastic just like the early Commanders and T-34A. The wiring and fuel bladders have been a warranted concern for me while ferrying and flying these old birds. Looking forward to seeing this bird airborne. Best of luck.

Do it, would probably become my favorite story to follow. See of the engine can be salvaged on the third and sell it. Junk the rest unless you can sell some of the other parts. Then get the other two cleaned. Thoroughly. Pressure washer. Then buff. Probably hold off on the wax. That will give you a much better idea of what you are looking at. I personally would do the Aztec first. But I like those older Pipers more than the Cessnas so I'm biased. Subscribed!
