Hello Everyone,
Ollie here and back with another Starcarft 2 1v1. This time Terran vs Zerg.
Another game of Silver League!
So i had a lot of grand plans for this game, but ultimately i just ended up defending myself on an early push until the opponent eventually GG'd
Hope you enjoy :D
What I'd love to know is where you think I can improve.
As always, I'd love your feedback and comments, I'm enjoying getting better with your help!
Look forward to chatting next time.

This was a classic case of what I think of as the “slow death animation of failed cheese.” He meant to hit you hard early and made a lot of sacrifices to do it, but his all-in stumbled into your army in a terrible engagement (for him) at the watch tower. Attacking your tank around the corner from the low ground was the worst available choice and cost him his all-in. If instead he pulled back, surrounded your army and waited for you to unseige, he could’ve had a much better fight and with 3-4 ravagers and the reinforcing roaches, it would’ve hit your base much harder. His second mistake was sitting in tank range while attacking your natural. If he had pulled back to the outside of your natural he could’ve forced you to lift off and gotten your supply depots without losing any army, then pull back, check for (and then destroy) the third, and pinned you on 1 base. That would be a position he could transition out of, even with only 22 workers. Once the initial push was held, he was simply behind in all metrics (smaller army, poorer tech, less workers). Very hard to come back from that position, but sometimes they drag it out. I don’t think you will see the level of control and decision making I just described in silver, I just mention it to illustrate how what he was doing wasn’t totally foolish.

15:06 Work to make hotkeying your production buildings an immediate reflex. Box worker -> B -> B -> Click where to put it -> Box Building -> Ctrl+2 Then as you cycle through you production buildings (I saw you start working that in earlier) you'll be able to constantly monitor their status like you already do your CC's.

Good job defending here! Continuing unit production is the most important thing, which you did well. If you get distracted with the fighting and go 1-2 minutes without making new units, it will cost you, but you had a decent flow of new units popping out to defend. Nice! As you noticed, you were accumulating resources faster than you could spend them, even after maxing out your barracks and factory queues. When you do this, it means it's time for more barracks (it's also a good time to make sure you've started stim and combat shield). At the point in the game where you can afford 10 marines at once, you need more production. You'll be amazed how quickly you can build a scary army with just a few more production buildings. Harassing with the vikings has been serving you well - at this level, it's common to be able to wipe a whole mineral line if your opponent is distracted, and you're generally doing a good job at choosing your moments. That said, you probably had too many vikings here. A squad of 3-4 for mineral line harassment and to pick off overlords is good, and besides that I think medivacs will strengthen your army much more than extra vikings (unless you see them making lots of air units of course). Your build and basic economy skills are getting a lot better, so push yourself to use those available resources! Keep it up!

Hey Tacco, thanks for the kind words, im really glad my build process in improving, i am loving getting slicker at it, and who knows, maybe soon ill be able to actually do my build and talk at the same time :p yeah, i know i need medivacs, i dont know why i always end up prefering Vikings in the moment, i think ive had a few games where im worreid about being pushed by air and i had no defence, regardless, one thing im going to try and do better is once i start researching STIM, start building a few medivacs.

@@Voidspacealpha vs. zerg, vikings won't help you. They are "better" than mutas 1-for-1, but at the speed zerg can produce mutas, the vikings don't really amount to much more than a speed bump. Your time, money, and resources can be better spent in other things than Vikings until the Zerg is on Brood Lords. 1 Viking is good to clean up Overlords, but after that either get some liberators to seige the mineral lines with or get right into your medivac production for your main army. Obviously we aren't talking about this game, but you seem to have some trauma over them Obviously we aren't talking about this game, but you seem to have some trauma over Mutas, so here are some hints: stim helps a lot against mutas. Without it, you can't chase them away fast enough and they'll just stay right ahead of your dudes while wrecking whatever they can get their snakes on. Otherwise, a big key is to see them coming-usually this looks like a reaper scout or a scan around 4:30 or 5:00, you're looking for the spire. Other tells are a complete Lair (upgraded hatchery) and lots of gases, although this can be other sorts of aggression as well. When zerg aren't building a tech army, they take 1 gas to get ling speed and lair, and don't take more gasses for several minutes. The quickest I seem to be able to hit with a reasonable force of mutas is ~7 minutes. If you see them in your base earlier, it's a huge commitment by the Zerg and literally your only task is to survive the wave. By 7 minutes, once you work out the kinks in your build, you will have stim and 3-5 barracks pumping out marines. This is enough to defend the first punch, the most important thing is to split some marines off to the next base the mutas are going to bounce to. Then, a couple of missile turrets and keep macroing toward your goal. If Zerg leans into the Mutas, you respond hard. A trick I like to play with Terrans is to make it feel like I'm going hard with Mutas as I prepare a tech switch in the background. As soon as I see 3-10 turrets, Thors, Liberators, Vikings, etc. I max on Roach Hydra and go win the game. If they don't respond hard, I keep pressing with Mutas until they crumble, counterattack or do react hard enough. At your level you're probably just safe to make a hard reaction to the Mutas then get back to your gameplan. Mutas are 100 minerals and 100 gas each and almost 0 hit points. They are an arctypical glass cannon. They literally evaporate under almost any amount of damage and they cost more than 4 marines worth of units (on the theory that gas is more valuable than minerals). They can't go toe-to-toe with hardly anything of even close to equal supply that can shoot air. Finally, keep in mind that it is perfectly fine and expected to lose some games. You might just want to say to yourself "for now, I am just going to do my best if someone opens Mutas but I am perfectly ok with the fact that my build is not well suited to handling them. There are so many varieties of games that you will encounter, if you try to prepare for all possibilities, you end up with a plan that doesn't have any sharp edges, sure you're "safe" but you don't have any ability to get out there and impact your opponent until much later than you otherwise might. If you are getting whipped by Mutas repeatedly, maybe a turret in each mineral line at 5:00 as a safety precaution, just don't rearrange your whole gameplan against a strategy you encounter 1 in 3, 1 in 10, or 1 in 100 games.

well done on holding that :D Defending to victory is actually a major part of starcraft. And a big part of scouting is figuring out that you have to defend in a particular game. In a higher level game there would be massive alarm bells ringing when the scout at 5:55 sees only two drones at the opponents natural. At that point you would know, all you have to do to win is defend and moving out on the map is actually a really big mistake. Realistically this is not high level though and what you did was completely fine :) It is actually very easy to get caught up in microing for the defense and forgetting to produce more units. That did not happen to you so props for that.

Lots of potential to use command queuing. I saw you queue workers back to mining which was great, but this has tons more potential! For example, you can queue tanks to siege. You can queue attack moves if you want units to take a certain route across the map. You can give vikings a move command to a mineral line, the queue them to land. You can click a structure than queue a move command back toward your side of the map if you want your army to retreat after killing the structure. This is the gist of the next level of multitasking. Give a series of orders and then do your chores (make workers, units, mules, production structures and upgrades) while they implement the orders.

12:44 zerg need to expand faster than T or P. They feel equal when they are 1 base ahead. This is because all of their production comes from Hatcheries and they have cheap, inferior units so they have to be able to produce at a much higher rate. So while you have to build barracks and Factories to produce more, Zerg only needs the tech structure and larva from more hatcheries. Even when they are playing a “2-base play” they’re probably going to have three hatcheries. They just wont drone the third. I play a ling-bane all-in in ZvZ. I build three hatcheries even though droning stops at 25 workers (just over 1 base of workers) solely because I need the larva.

Nice game, i really like your thinking and analyzing. A couple of things i noticed: 5:02 One of the mules you said you misclicked sat there and did nothing, you prolly shoudl ahve ordered it to mine again. So in future maybe its worth it to doublecheck if mules are mining ok after dropping, its alot of minerals i think (i dont play terran, im protoss:) ). Second thing your oppoenet was allining you and ideally you would have realized it earlier. Im only Dia2 myself, so im not as good as pros at noticing all the telltales, but your marine at 5:56 has seen the natural with only 2 drones mining at this point of the game. It means all his recources must have gone somewhere else not in economy, it should sound the alert in your brain, i at this point would have dropped shield batteries en masse:).Overall I dont know TvZ , but there are earlier telltales in each matchup. In PvZ if there is no Zerg 3rd base by 3:30, i know something is up. A good trick is to send a modest harass force early, you might do some dmg, but the main benefit is scouting. if you sent 2 reapers or hellions at 3 minute and saw the roach warren or he defended with roaches, you would know something is up. I usually send my first adept across the map, then not long after i got my first oracle harrasing, so i got eyes on my oponent all the time. gl hf:)

1:54 👍 4:45 Well, you boxed him, but too early. You're trying to be too accurate in clicking a lot of units individually, work on just boxing them like that. Haha. Roach all-in, either it works right then or its GG. Lots of down time on your production still, but could have been worse. This plan of his was to essentially punish players who are worst at maintaining their production and expanding. If he is going to Roach All-in past 7 mins, he might as well have just maxed out on roaches, totally doable at this level.

That was a failed 2 base Ravager all-in by your opponent there he probably thought you would give up after doing high damage to your natural. he was way behind and probably surrendered assuming you were multiple bases over him instead of one. your one big mistake was when you do have a lot in the bank you tend to over-respond by producing many of one thing. You did it with a bunch of scvs and supply depots. Try to vary how you spend your bank when you save minerals. Your tank placements were really great this game they were sieged in perfect spots to defend.

Roaches are hot garbage in tvz against bio. Straight up marine medivac will win but marauders will obliterate them. Nothing much to say here besides macro more, get stim, shield, medivac and marauders for roaches. Also Vikings aren’t the best unit against Zerg. They’re good at fighting late game flyers but on the ground they’re good against nothing. Medivac harass is always better so I recommend practicing that but Vikings are actually a decent crutch to learn multipronging and harassment. Try to attack another base while you land the Vikings to cause a bigger headache. I also recommend liberator harass. They’re pretty easy to use and you don’t need to control them too much. Just fly them behind mineral line and siege the edge. Worker pathing makes it so a few will walk into their shots and makes it hard for ground units to kill tjem. Your opponent did a terrible roach rush im guessing. Usually it hits earlier with a few ravager too. For this, make a bunker and mass repair it. Make a tank or cyclones and sit it behind the bunker to help. Build up to a banshee and chase the roaches home. You’re ahead if you don’t lose too many scvs.

Roaches are good early against Terran but they drop off as the Terran gets up around 160 supply because they are supply expensive. Roach can become Roach Hydra which keeps up with Terran until they have 4 bases and transitions well into lurkers which are very viable mid-late. Also, they tech switch nicely with Mutas. They succeed against everything that are good against mutas and mutas are good against everything that are good against roaches.

@@MrDenniy Yeah that's true. I mostly play mech TVZ so my bio knowledge is lacking. I think the main weakness of roach hydra is that they're slower than ling bane so more vulnerable to multiprong. Also bio tank should be better against them too because tanks splatter roach hydra and counter lurkers. Here, mutas are a threat because they can jump the tanks while the bio is distracted by roach hydra though the tanks would get a few hits off here and thors would be good here because they have a higher target priority to air units.
