Previously chemical engineer and now a stay-at-home mom, my recommendation is talk to your company and see if they would create a part time job for you. Use that money and hire a nanny to help you around the house. This will allow you to have both worlds. Being an engineer and being a SAHM are two different breeds with different pace, mentality, skill sets, and temperament. Good engineers do not equate to good SAHM. In the competitive field of engineering, you will not be able to perform and compete with new engineers if you are out of workforce for more than a year.

As a Computational Neuroscientist, I agree with this. Try to see if your company will let you work part-time. Life changes all the time & it’s challenging for SAHM to re-enter the work force when it does, even with degree & previous experience.

@@msi8311 That's reality. From the company’s point of view, the most economic choice is a new engineer, who will dedicate all his/her time to their multimillion dollars project, rather than a mother engineer who can't work overtime and can quit anytime.

I’ve been blessed to be home with my kids for five years now, and was feeling so depressed about feeling like I wasn’t contributing enough financially and like I wasted my degree. All of my other parent friends work and make so much money and have beautiful homes and cars and I was starting to feel jealous and unimportant. But it’s true, I will probably never regret choosing to stay home with my kids now that I have the choice. I’ve been a single working parent having to work and I remember the struggle in that as well. I also remember being scared having a baby at 17, and then being scared that I couldn’t have another baby at 27. Every area in life has its challenges and blessings. The hard part is remaining grateful no matter what.

We both worked with two kids with no problems. They're in school all day anyway starting at five years old, so why not work?? By both of us working, we could go on vacations, cash flow two kids in private college, buy good vehicles with cash, etc. You could even work opposite shifts, if you wanted. We didn't, but you could. And WE raised our kids, not daycare. We don't regret our 712-251-0925 at all. My parents both worked, and the three of us kids did just fine.

My wife decided to stay at home after our second little girl. Let me encourage you the same way I do her. Your are a contributor to your families success just as much as your husband. Your little one is fortunate to be raised by you in her tender years. I absolutely hated putting my first in daycare 40 hours a week and having someone else raise my child. My wife had the same feelings, she started teaching online part time and makes really good money per hour. I noticed her demeanor is a bit happier now that she’s been teaching. Her role is just as important as mine and we both share a bank account and view the money that comes in as a joint success.

Enjoy your stay at home life for a while. I’ve been doing it for seven years now and it has been amazing for our family. We schedule things around my husband’s schedule so he can see every sports game, and be there for every academic achievement, and since I don’t work it’s easy to plan it this way! I’m always here when our children have a need, and don’t have to worry about shaken baby syndrome, or hidden abuses. It's not about whether she can keep her skills and knowledge up to date while being out of the workforce; the trouble is that employers will view her as obsolete after she spends years away from engineering, and it will be extremely difficult to get a job interview. If she doesn't get back into an engineering job within a couple years, her career as an engineer will probably be over and done with.

@msi8311
@msi8311 3 жыл бұрын
@HelenaJ Working remotely can make you more available, but it’s not the same as giving children full attention, which they deserve. Men and women aren’t equal in biology, we are equal in modern society. I am personally not attracted to men who don’t strive to be the breadwinner, I don’t want to feel like the man, I want to feel like a protected woman (I have lived the career life, I know how it feels to be “independent”). I will always contribute, invest and be frugal, but I love children more than any man I know, will be happy to change diapers and clean puke, can be patient with screaming crying and kicking, am okay with telling people I don’t have some job title that feeds my ego and impresses people. I’m happy to clean and cook so my man can study harder or relax from work and not deal with menial tasks. Most men I know would prefer to go to work than stay home, and by stay home I mean raise children not live a life of early retirement. Society outpaces biology, if people want to switch the roles and men stay home and women work that’s fine, whatever gives kids the best environment, but men and women being “equal” is a social construct and not a biological fact.

"software will have completely changed in seven years, agreed?" Respectfully Dave I disagree. The fundamentals of computer science, algorithms, data structures and writing clean code don't change much. The basic operations most applications perform (Create, Update, Read and Delete data) don't change much either. Even programming languages like C# and Java will still be around and in use. A new programming language may appear, but learning the syntax of a new programming language is typically not a big deal.

In 1970 we lived on second lieutenant's pay of $234 deposited twice a month. All the other families living in the building were new second lieutenants too and four of the six families had first babies in the same two or three months. Ruth's mama came to help us out and became gramma to all four babies. The poor young women didn't know much about new babies. Even my wife didn't; I did, being a big brother and former baby sitter. but I was with the other guys off on field training. Gramma was great! Dave's right--you can't get the baby years back and they're an adventure too! In our seventies we don't regret a minute of those years. Even the shortage of money was educational.

I think she and her husband should both work part time if she wants to stay in her career. It is unlikely she will be able to find a job after being out for 5+ years. She needs to work at least some if she wants to maintain her career. If it’s more important to be at home full time with her kids, then she should do that. It’s ultimately not a math problem in this context. It’s a matter of what she and her husband want to prioritize.

Why isn't there a conversation about the father staying home, or sharing the stay home role? And staying home doesn't have to be 10+ years, a year or two might be reasonable based on the children's ages & needs (personally I think teens need more parental interaction than a 9-10 yr old!).

This is good advice as long as the husband keeps job and income AND/OR until they don’t have a second child. With another kid, those 5-7 years of no work will become 10-14 years of no income for her. And if the marriage goes down... This is why I think women need to keep working, even if it’s just a small-stay-at-home-mom kind of job. This is my opinion, don’t come for me :)

Quitting work is a major financial decision. According to YOU such a decision should ALWAYS be made together, even when the wifey poo, like your wifey poo, does not work and contribute to the home. Yet here, you don't ask her what her husband thinks, you don't ask her what the family's financial goals are - you just up and tell her "quit." Your advices is, once again, exposed to be inconsistent and not rooted in objectivity or logic, but subjectively based upon your values. Overall, bad advice.

That’s radical feminism which is a whole other territory. Feminism according to the definitions is about choices for both men and women.
