Fun fact: British monarchs hardly if ever abdicate the throne (I think less than five have ever done so), so when George says that he didn’t know that was a thing, he was probably genuinely perplexed.
@ndemers3 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, abdications have to be approved by Parliament. Edward VIII in 1936 was the only one who voluntarily gave up the throne, all others were pressured to quit or even flee the country. So George's puzzlement was extremely valid :)
@rachelfox81083 жыл бұрын
@@ndemers Voluntarily, yes and no. He gave it up voluntarily, but it was because he was pressured into only one of two options laid out because of the constitutional laws the crown is bound by as both the reigning monarch and the head of the Church of England, not least of which is that a monarch must never divorce, and much never marry someone who is divorced or Catholic. (Lesser members of the Royal family can, but only in Scotland and with the monarch's permission). The two options were: leave Wallace Simpson and rule as a single man, or marry her and step down. If he could have had both Wallace and the throne, he would have, but it would have caused major disillusionments with the monarchy and no doubt brought it to an end much sooner. It was a choice, technically, but his Sophie's Choice.
@PONR20062 жыл бұрын
@@rachelfox8108 the option of a morganatic marriage was considered, I believe, but ultimately rejected by all parties involved. There were other major religious and legal problems regarding the marriage, though, far beyond “a king cannot marry a divorced woman whose former husband was still alive” (had Wallis been divorced but with no living exes she would’ve been legally and religiously cleared to marry Edward, at least in theory).
@rachelfox81082 жыл бұрын
@@PONR2006 Ah yes, I forgot the "former spouse must have passed away" detail -- it's important as then it would be the same as the person in question being a widow(er), who are technically allowed to marry into the royal family. Of course, technicalities are just the lowest bar for prospective spouses into the royal family, as even now there are rules of decorum that have to be met to maintain their reputation. I think a part of them believes that if you do away with some of the rules, it somehow disqualifies the importance of following them before, makes them fallible, and if they're fallible, then so is the royal family, and that makes them seem pointless. Part of me wonders if they permitted Harry to marry Meghan because of the pressure of the public to conform to modern, more progressive ideals, but the double-crossing from Kensington Palace, the media and other members of the family show that the marriage was never supposed to last and was supposed to be blamed entirely on Meghan. Please only take these as speculations, though, I would only claim something to be true if I could provide evidence to confirm it.
@PONR20062 жыл бұрын
@@rachelfox8108 most rules bend to the pressure of changing times. In this particular case it was a rule of the Anglican Church meant for ALL followers of the religion. As king Edward could not be seen breaking a rule meant to apply to all Anglicans. As times changed and divorce became more prevalent I imagine there was pressure by the general Anglican population to change the rule (or just lots of anglicans disregarding it) to the point where the church itself changed it. As for Meghan, I do believe the support for the marriage from inside the royal sphere came from how it would make them look, or how it would be an inevitable step towards more progress, but that doesn’t mean it was personally well-received. We will never know, of course, unless there’s some sort of leak of personal documentation to tell us either way.

I think I know why he thought of John Adams like that. I read into the claim this play made that King George III met John Adams in 1785 and it's absolutely true but that's not the point. See, John seemed kind of nervous about talking to King George III as did the King, himself about talking to John Adams. The US won it's first war (which was against England) and now they're supposed to have diplomatic relations?? I think the word "awkward" would be an apt descriptor for the entire thing. As a result of that (as far as I know) one-and-only meeting between John Adams, who was the United States Minister to Great Britain before he was ever the second President of the United States and George III, the King of England who oppressed and subjugated the people who settled in America, I can only speculate that the King didn't have a very high opinion of Adams. I mean, it's clearly stated what he thought of Adams in this song but that might not be true because Lin-Manuel likes to add creative liberties like most people who write stories like these do.
