Amazing that the studio fought against Pacino as Michael - they actually spent over $400,000.00 on screen tests (including testing James Caan for Michael!!!) before they realized that Coppola was right!

Regardless of the timestamp, you can watch The Godfather I and II and have your eyes glued to it until the credits roll. Those two films were crafted to perfection. For me and my dad, watching it was like a pilgrimage. I would watch it once every two years and whatever timestamp my dad would catch me in, he would sit down quietly and watch it with me. I lost him to COVID a year ago. Watching TGF I & II will always remind me of him.

Imagine the range of emotions in a short amount of time. At first you'd assume Michael has special plans for you and him because he's proud of you and he wants to show his appreciation, then the kiss -- confusion -- then the line, "I knew it was you..." Now you're thinking, "How does he mean that? What does he know? Is it good? Is it bad?" Michael: "...you broke my heart..." You: "Oh, that's not good." Michael: "...you broke my heart." You: "Oh, that's definitely not good. Wait... was that the kiss of death!? Oh, he knows everything... I better get the H outta here!"

It is easy to overlook John Cazale's performance in this scene, but that's because of how natural he makes it look, which is the sign of a great actor. The mix of emotions on his face and his instinctive reaction of fear and shame all at the same time. He was a great actor who rivalled Pacino in a lot of scenes.

He went behind Michael's Back and worked with Hyman Roth to try and get Michael killed. In GF 1 Fredo was angry that Michael was made The New Don and not him. He insisted that he didn't know Johnny Ola (Hyman's Errand Boy) or Hyman Roth but when they went to see a Sex Show in Cuba, Senator Patrick Geary asked Fredo how he knew about the place and Fredo said that Johnny Ola told him in which he pretty much gave himself away.

That's why these two films (I refuse to include the 3rd) is an epic tragedy. He starts off wanting nothing to do with the family 'business' and everything that entails... to get as far away as he can. That's why the ending scene is soo important. To show the difference between him and Sonny and their morals and values. Yet the end of the 2nd film he has become the very thing he despised most. To your point, he has crushed what remained of his soul by killing Fredo.
