Regardless of the timestamp, you can watch The Godfather I and II and have your eyes glued to it until the credits roll. Those two films were crafted to perfection. For me and my dad, watching it was like a pilgrimage. I would watch it once every two years and whatever timestamp my dad would catch me in, he would sit down quietly and watch it with me. I lost him to COVID a year ago. Watching TGF I & II will always remind me of him.

Imagine the range of emotions in a short amount of time. At first you'd assume Michael has special plans for you and him because he's proud of you and he wants to show his appreciation, then the kiss -- confusion -- then the line, "I knew it was you..." Now you're thinking, "How does he mean that? What does he know? Is it good? Is it bad?" Michael: "...you broke my heart..." You: "Oh, that's not good." Michael: "...you broke my heart." You: "Oh, that's definitely not good. Wait... was that the kiss of death!? Oh, he knows everything... I better get the H outta here!"

I remember this scene when I was a young boy...watching it on TV. Once Michael holds Fredo's face so tightly - you know Michael was heart broken....the acting by both Al and John were at an academy award level...it was difficult to watch the fury in Michael's eyes as there were tears behind the anger.

The fact that they didn't both win Oscars for this film remains one of the great crimes against humanity (as it relates to acting awards). It does not get any better than this. Such remarkable, remarkable talents.

That's why these two films (I refuse to include the 3rd) is an epic tragedy. He starts off wanting nothing to do with the family 'business' and everything that entails... to get as far away as he can. That's why the ending scene is soo important. To show the difference between him and Sonny and their morals and values. Yet the end of the 2nd film he has become the very thing he despised most. To your point, he has crushed what remained of his soul by killing Fredo.

That is a bitter choice between familial affection and reality, Fredo's betrayal is an unforgiving crime in mafia family and had done harm to Micheal's family. Micheal must be cruel, warring to others what is the end of betrayer. So even Fredo was Micheal's beloved brother, It must be done, or the Corleone family would be crash down.

You're right but I genuinely believe that if Fredo had expressed remorse & guilt over his actions that Michael would have let him live. Michael knew that Fredo was weak & stupid. It's not out of the question that he could be convinced that Fredo got mixed up with shady people that took advantage of him and was in way over his head. Too bad Fredo instead vented rage & frustration against Michael which solidified the betrayal.

This is an iconic scene, no doubt… one scene where Pacino is so subtly phenomenal, also portraying the pain of his brothers betrayal, is where Michael, Fredo, Senator Geary and their entourage are at the Cuban Night Club and Fredo is bragging about he and Johnny Orloff knowing the back alley clubs like the back of their hands…. Early in the night Fredo had behaved as of he had never known Johnny or Hyman Roth. Michael hung his head in disbelief…. He broke his heart….
