I have only ever used the "I know the owner" card once. I walked into a car repair shop, went up to the counter, looked my mom right in the eye and told her to give me a deal because I know the owner. She owned it. She did not give me a deal.

Every time we visit the only restaurant owner we know, my s/o makes great effort to try to be a regular paying customer instead of trying to invoke our "knowing the owner creds" while the owner will immediately give us free food if he sees us. So yeah, people who know the owner probably don't usually say "I know the owner" unless they're super struggling for cash, lol

pro tip: even if you know the owner, please pay when you can. taking advantage of free food can be very bad for a business. if anything, you should be supportive of the business and pay extra. i'm not saying you always have to pay, it's just nice to help out when you can

I never understood expecting free stuff because you know the owner or they are family. If you can give friends and family discounts at your business, that's fantastic! But the reality for most people is that business is hard and they need the support of friends and family. If anything, they are the ones you should be able to count on most to help your business succeed.

So I work at a 5 guys and our owner is one of the sons of the original founder of 5 guys(The place was named after his 5 sons who were the 1st employees) A woman in her like 20s tried to scam a meal out of us by claiming to be the owner and after we showed her a video explaining who the owner was (A training video all employees watch, and this was after a 10 ish minute discussion explaining how we know she isn't) She still refused to back down till we threatened to call the cops

I work at subway it’s great, I’m 15 and whenever I’m ringing someone up there have been multiple instances where the customer thinks that the prices, broken card swipe, declined coupons, etc are absurd so they spend 20 minutes arguing, and I just say “sir this is the company policy, and everyone you see working here can’t change any of the problems you’ve brought up(were all teens just working the line), I’m really sorry sir”
