As an indie game dev its really awesome to see the massive success of indie games developed by small teams. Recently, there has been the incredible rise in popularity of the indie game Vampire Survivors. As indie game developers, or anyone interested in indie game development, I think it can be really beneficial to play and review popular indie games. This can give valuable insight into mechanics or interactions that ultimately helped the game's success.
Throughout this video I reflect on my nearly 2 years of indie game dev experience as I play through Vampire Survivors for (pretty much) the first time. I try to get a few key takeaways to help improve my indie game Castlemancer.
Comment below if you like this format of live reacting to a successful indie game, and we could review some other well known indie games. I also hope this helps any other indie game devs with key takeaways to look for in popular indie games.

I had no idea the dev had worked on slot machines. That makes a lot of sense!

Clearly not a healthbar game. You need the dmg numbers though, a lot of people love to see numbers go up. Very important. You have to play at least 10-15h to get a solid grip on the real draw of this game. Mechanics are great, but the unlocks and how it's mixed with secrets and other things on the map that you didn't even come close to is perfect. Not to mention different items outside of the gameplay.

Interesting, what makes a healthbar game vs. not a healthbar game?

Regarding the Axe, I noticed it and loved the idea. It is totally off anything I would have expected. Edit: I would not love health bars in Vampire Survivors. Too much clutter among the hundreds of enemies.

Man, barely into this video and that color flashing you praised for stimulating interest etc... Physically painful for me, with migraines and photosensitivity. Guess that's an automatic pass :( shame

I'm really sorry about that, I should have added a photosensitivity warning at the beginning! Fortunately the game does have a warning before the menu screen starts though! I'll make sure to add it in the description!
