Vocalist since 2017 here, I would recommend looking into learning projection. Its a way of using the diaphragm to force a higher volume of air through the vocals to make them sound more loud and full. Alex Terrible is doing the same basic sounds you learned in this video but he's a master at projecting his scream to get that insane low growl. There is also a DVD by Melissa Cross called The Zen of Screaming all about breathing techniques, projection, and creating the sounds themselves, she was the vocal coach for Randy Blythe from LoG. What you managed to do took me 3 years to learn and is ultimately insanely impressive and if you keep practicing you'll have a sick ass scream!

If you’re a death metal singer, your stage moves should ONLY be stoically standing there with your hair down while you look down, feet solider with apart, with one hand cuffing the microphone and the other hand in an “open palm” position like you’re grabbing a fragile glass ball. Also, in the studio, your vocals MUST be compressed so heavily in the mix so that, and the double kick are the only things you hear. Guitars and bass are just a background wash.

The technique you're discovering literally on your own reminds me of the "tunnel throat" technique which is typically heard in deathcore. You haven't perfected it but you're on the right track to sounding incredible if you can manage to hone that sound. Use the technique that came the most natural and comfortable to you and double down on it, make it your own. Just keep experimenting with sounds and techniques that make sense as a metal vocalist.

Since I started with fry because it come extremely natural to me and I've been doing them for 3 years you need to find where your voice starts to break keep that note move it up from vocal folds to the false chords add distortion then close the false chords and let them vibrate only when air moves them up and down so they make the classic click fry distortion and then maintain that you don't need to push much with fry it's ny default quite scream you can start by wishpers I hope that helps even a bit

I started with whisper screaming in the shower and after doing that a while with something resembling distortion (whispering Dickie Allen noises) it stopped sounding like much of a whisper. I think I started tightening some part of my throat and it made a sound without any pain. The next time I watched a tutorial, I realised what I was doing was just a weak fry scream and then it got better with practice. I'm not 100% sure I'm doing it right but it sounds a lot better than everything else I've tried.

For many years I've been practicing screaming and it has not been an easy task. It's one of those things you have to stick to for a long time and constantly practice, ten years later and I have finally just started getting some what decent sounding to my own ears, a couple buddies think I'm actually really good but I know deep down inside I suck, But you know what confidence is the key as well as hard work. Keep at it dude and eventually you'll hit that sweet spot.

I think you did alright. Learning this stuff takes time, and part of it is actually the muscles in your throat adapting to the new way of using your vocal (and false) chords, and how to close off the right amount of airflow. I used several different techniques when I was a vocalist, but now that I haven't done it for a while I can't do it properly without a good amount of practice. Proper vocal warmups (not just "scream-related") also helps a bunch.

Just this intro alone gained you a subscriber lmao I've been doing "harsh" metal vocals since 2010, at the beginning I started doing false chord vocals, now I do a mixture of false chord and vocal fry, mainly vocal fry. But I can promise you doing false chords and vocal fry wrong can permanently fuck up your vocal chords and folds. If you ever want some pointers or free lessons let me know. I stopped taking students back in December so I could focus more on recording music, but I'd be more than happy to help.

I've been doing black metal vocals for id say 15+ years, I also felt like the things new people lacked when learning how to scream is projection and breathing techniques. Getting the actual sound you want should also be second to not destroying your vocal cords. Doing it the wrong way for a few years and getting polyps in your throat is probably not a fun thing. As its been mentioned probably, the Zen of Screaming is definitely a good place to start. Most the youtube tutorials I see teach you shortcuts and have some pretty bad advice. Its a fun hobby though.

The trick to screaming is throat singing. Khovu and dag kargyraa translate directly into falsecord and khoomei translates directly into fry. I'll be honest, 99% of the information out there on KZfaq for screaming is not good or is very outdated, but you managed a pretty solid base sound for an fc scream by the end of a month. The big issue with many of the resources you'll find online is people telling you to sigh or grunt to get your false folds to distort without telling you that there is a very specific way to sigh/grunt to prevent issues. This is where the two styles of kargyraa come in. Khovu and dag teach a controlled and clean engagement of the true folds, false folds, and aryepiglittic folds. You can think of these styles of kargyraa as a non distorted falsecord scream. Whereas almost everyone tells you to use vocal fry as the base for your fry scream when in reality vocal fry has nothing to do with fry. A fry scream comes from a high pressurized stream of air moving through a narrowed passageway of the throat causing cartilages to move at a high rate. Or simply using a controlled closure of the throat with a controlled stream of air to get the sound. Whereas vocal fry is an irregular phonation of one's true vocal folds and is safe to sing in, but not safe as a form of distortion. The best way to get a fry scream is to start from khoomei. It's another form of Tuvan throat singing like dag and khovu kargyraa, but instead teaches the controlled closure of the throat and the placement of sound needed to get a safe fry (not vocal fry) scream. So if you ever want to take your screams to the next level, this is how.

Dude “a fry scream” is literally an umbrella term with multiple options and techniques. Some people even use overcompressed false cords with less amount of projection and voila - you get some kind of a long scream. Also the theory about cartilages being the basis for frys, I’ve heard that many times but I seriously doubt it. As cartilages (cuneiform) just can’t make a good closure since they are literally just two round pieces of cartilage, they are not like walls. Plus EVI made a video on extreme vocals and they literally demonstrated (thru multiple laryngoscopy videos) that cartilage vibration provides a very low rumbling (in addition to FC vibration) in what they call a grunt - a typical old school death metal growl. So, any decent sources that it’s cartilages that generate fry distortion?

Love this vid. Only recommendation.... Have you considered possibly running your master audio track through a bus compressor to tighten up the range? When you're speaking, your voice is lower. But some clips are WICKED loud. If you throw a compressor/limiter on some of those super loud parts even...and turn them down to match your vocals...the rest will balance more evenly. Then you can bring the overall video volume and loudness up to a even level while still getting that overblown volume effect on certain clips. Food for thought. Keep em coming.

Yeah bro depends a lot on the sound you start with I was trying to make false chords and I was doing frys the reason some people don't get them is because you first need to find where your voice breaks and then take it move the sound from your actual vocals to the false chords then add distortion and close them false chords that's why frys last longer overall it's more complicated

the thing with fry is that you don't have to scream, it's a technique that doesn't have a lot of volume in comparison with false chords My aproach to it is giving a bit of tone like aaaaa but exhaling a bit, and slowly closing how much air you let pass with your throat I guess, so you start hearing this ... well, frying sound, if you do it quietly it sounds like you were whispering. It's hard to explain, for me the difficult one is the false chord, I can only do short ones like a darn big ol dawg, yours are really good imo

I learned the basics from watching Mary Zimmer on KZfaq and following some of her examples, and also the Melissa Cross "Zen and the art of screaming" dvd's, which specifically taught me about breathing and air movement (always use a "BY THE WAY!" when singing). I'm still working on volume and projection, but i'm happy with my results so far.

This is dope AF. I found this cause with in the past two hours (after watching Alex Terribles vocals on tiktok) I decided to learn to do low growls and it's coming along pretty damn well. I already know how to rap fast af and I can sing so this is basically the last step 😂

I know the struggle, I am physically the template for a fucking badass metal vocalist. I got a big beard, huge head of hair, and I’m built like an oak tree. But my voice sounds like…well, Uncle Judy

Imagine being me, not only being the singer but bassist, drummer, and guitarist at my own band and losing my GIANT b00bs and AZZ GF for a guy who only plays acoustic guitar.

If you do false chord for mid - you can practice bending it higher. Doing it right without force will lead you towards the place you need to be set at for most highs.
