As an engineer who didn't do much manual jobs, I can't express enough how fulfilling is the experience of acquiring some practical skills as these. It does pay off!

Agreed! I have two skill acquisition goals this year. The first was to learn how to 3D model well enough to make my own 3D prints. I've been taking lessons on that since April and I'm really pleased with my progress. The second was to learn to weld and even this introductory lesson has been a game changer. Keep on learning!

When I retired, I set up a shop in my garage to "build stuff." Included was a Lincoln Stick welder. But, I didn't know how to weld. I managed to find a welding course taught as an Arigriculture Extension Couse at the local high school. It was very inexpensive, maybe $ 25, met one evening a week for three hours for eight weeks. It covered primarily electric arc (stick) welding but did include a couple of lessons on MIG, flux core, and gas welding. If you want to learn to weld, check out your local high school or college and see if they offer extension courses in welding. Also, check with your state or county extension offices for possible courses.

No beginner has any business trying to weld a car chassis. Period.
@JCWren
@JCWren 8 ай бұрын
Maybe Jeff told you this off camera, but before pulling the trigger, do a couple of dry runs to make sure you've got the range of motion you need, that you're not getting twisted up, and that the tip will remain at the correct angle and remain visible. You may find you need to reposition to get that pass done. You can restart a weld, but it's more ideal not to. It's important to be as comfortable as the situation will let you be. Obviously if you're welding on a car chassis you're not going to be in a seated position at the correct height at a welding table, but make it as good as you can be. Finally, when you get fatigued, just stop. Pushing through is only going to allow for more misteaks to happen and wind up with poor welds.

Nils, this was great! I know nothing about welding, but always wanted to make it a possibility in my DYI shed. Now I know some more - so thank you! Adding a compressor, a table saw and this type of equipment to a DYI´ers arsenal of tools, makes a huge difference. I am thinking that a welder would do too, but I am still not sure what it actually takes. I mean, are there any small welding sets available and would you consider making a video of how to get started if you start from scratch and know nothing about which type of machine or tread to go for? For DYI´ers that is not going into serious welding, but just want to fix a broken metal leg or similar.

Not bad, considering you don't have many adjustments on that machine, plus is an AC welder which creates mote spatter. Now you are ready for an upgrade, the Titanium 125. The Titanium 125 is on sale this weekend, $149 with coupon.

I was taught to weld by an expert - it’s not about the welding bead - anyone can be taught to put a good bead down - especially with todays equipment. It’s really all about managing heat and upset (metal distortion and shrinkage) on your project. It is about knowing where to start and stop, controlling heat, and planning your project so dimensions are achieved and distortion is controlled. He also taught me that everyone knows how to use a broom so there is no excuse for not cleaning up the shop floor.

Is anyone type of welding any stronger than the other
@LRN2DIY
@LRN2DIY 8 ай бұрын
According to Jeff (Mech Master) flux core is actually one of the stronger, more penetrating welds. Here's an article that helps to break some of it down: kanyanaengineering.com.au/different-types-of-welding/#:~:text=TIG%20welding%20is%20often%20considered,can%20create%20a%20strong%20joint.
