Honestly, I don't believe that she is paying 560 for a 1 bedroom apartment in that neighborhood. 560 bucks is a studio in a district much further from the parliament. (I live in Budapest.) Her apartment in that area should be around a 1000 dollar. Maybe she is lucky because her landlord didn't raise the rent for some reason. But don't be fooled her experience is not representative for everyday people in Hungary.

The food prices are the same or some cases higher then in western europe. We pay 27% taxes on everything and if you are sick with more than a flu you have to go to the private sector anyways. In the past, I also had a devastating opinion of the Hungarian health care system, and unfortunately I still have it when I look at the direction of the processes in the 5 years since I have been working in my own practice. However, the picture is greatly improved by the experiences of my foreign and Hungarian patients who spent a longer or shorter time abroad and used the healthcare systems there, and then moved to Hungary. They have the same opinion about the Hungarian healthcare system as in the above video about the public transport: compared to what they experienced abroad, the one here is much better. This is the opinion of more than 80% of similar patients. Hungarian here. This video is a HUGE LIE. For 560 USD per month, you will get an old 30-35 square meter apartment *without a separate bedroom* somewhere in the *outer part* of the city. A flat like she showcases us in the video in the very center of downtown where she lives costs around 1200 USD/month *without* utilities. The price she pays for it is a heavily subsidized price but for some strange reason she "forgets" to mention this little detail. The average net income in Hungary in 2024 is 1260 USD, nowhere near what she earns. Hungary had the highest inflation in Europe in 2023 which increased prices by a huge amount, inflation for food was 55%, while salaries barely increased.

In the states she’s get around $2500 a month for life once retire age. Also if she made $30k in USA her healthcare would almost be free per month with medical/medicare. Also her salary would be higher here and more job opportunities for digital marketing here than there. She just wants to work part time but try to find an easier way out. This reminds me of people who move down to Mexico from the states for lower cost of living, but those types usually struggle there too.

As a Hungarian: 30k for a year is not bad at all, but IT IS NOT THE AVERAGE here. Actually here in Budapest a 2500$ salary for a month is pretty comfortable. It is beyond the average which is cc. the half of it. Health insurance... Well, yes, it is the fraction of the price as in the US, BUT: everyone who can afford it, spend for private healthcare. And you can easily spend 1 or 2 months of your salary for that. I"m happy for her, and I'm glad that she is having a good time here :) but keep in mind that is not the full picture at all. :)

People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

It is true that the presence of Westerners have contributed to the inflation of housing costs in Budapest and many other cities. However, you can't really blame them for it. It's just the way markets work. As demand increases, prices go up -- the influx of folks with a willingness to pay (WTP) higher than that of the locals makes the impact even stronger. On a personal level, you might act like the world is yours if you were to relocate to Vietnam and spend your Hungarian salary there. The lady in the video seems like a fairly humble and reasonable person who treats everyone around her with respect.

@@00Imochan have you heard of the Golden Visa program that many EU countries, including Hungary, have currently in place? It allows foreign nationals to acquire citizenship by means of investment into real estate, while it does not require them to actually establish residency in the country. Now, that I certainly view as extremely harmful. That is practically selling out the most hyped cities to Western, mostly American, investors and all of it is just a game for them. By contrast, decent expats bring several benefits to their host country and immediate community and should be welcomed.

It did contain factually correct information, and people need to know that life in Hungary is not all fun and games if you're not on a Westerner's budget. However, hating on expats altogether does not fix anything. I don't want to be the smart guy. All I want is to challenge you to come up with a more sophisticated view of the situation, suggestions for a possible solution, or at least some reasonable arguments for the position you currently hold.

Budapest buildings have a lot of character. The scenic view from Buda to Pest over the river is a UNESCO world heritage and is breathtaking. The city has lots to do. Awesome and huge ancient spas with tons of pools at different temperatures and types. They have the oldest metro train underground and it is very well maintained. They even have a Dracula castle (edit: it was not a Dracula castle but still a cool castle, it’s actually an agricultural museum built in 1896). Night clubs are open 24/7 and their nightclub drinks are really cheap. The island (Margaret Island, thanks to commenter below) with hostel, little zoo, water features, pool, etc is also very cool. We also rented 2-seater Vespa scooters. It’s an awesome way to see the city and find parking. Just stay away from the main roads where possible. Traffic rules aren’t exactly the same as in the states

I am a local to Budapest. I admit the scenery is very nice, I still find it beautiful every time I look over the city from a bridge or a hill. The spas are overpriced and overcrowded for regular visiting. Nightclubs are the hubs of criminals and prostitues you can expect some nasty thing whenever you visit one of them, you wont visit them regularly if you live here. The old metro is cool, most people dont use it btw even the metro is cool, the people using it are not :D The castle you are talking about (Vajdahunyad vára) is not the Dracula castle, there is only a statue to the hungarian actor who played Dracula (Lugosi Béla). The "real" Dracula castle, where Dracula lived is a different castle, called Törcsvár (Bran in romanian). Margaret island is really cool for regular visiting.

"I"m happy for her, and I'm glad that she is having a good time here :) but keep in mind that is not the full picture at all. :)" This quote is from one of the more sobering comments. My first reaction to this video is why did CNBC choose this Digital/Influencer/Ex-pat living in Budapest of all places? Her idyllic journey sounds like a Hollywood movie in the making starring Zendaya. (sarcasm intended) Pretty sure it's not the full picture. But she's seems like a person oblivious to anything that's not about her life journey. I noticed no people walking on the streets during her walks. When was this shot? Just after dawn? Anyone seeking to leave the USA should do thorough research and find the right fit for you. This seems like hers. Good for her. But be aware, many who fled to foreign shores during the Pandemic are returning as many countries changed their policies and things become more expensive than when they arrived.
