After living in Taiwan for two years and traveling about, I give my update on "Why I left the United States" & if I truly experienced a better life abroad.
Fair warning: I feel quite lucky to be an American abroad.

I used to live abroad as well. You are echoing a lot of my sentiments as well. Especially with that healthcare fear. I want to leave again. Recently, I have come back to the US, and beside the fact that you HAVE to have a car which is expensive, the fact that everyone drives everywhere puts a giant barrier from one person to the next. Theres nothing lively going on in the US. Its just a bunch of people getting in their cars, driving to get what they need, avoiding small talk with strangers, and going back home.

Where did you live abroad before and can I ask where in the US are you? I agree on the car thing! I used to have a car and it broke down and of course I couldn't afford a new one, so I turned to public trans which was fine but it sucks having the mindset of needing to be near public trans if you don't have/can't afford a car. I think now the culture is changing somewhat though oddly thanks to COVID cause more and more people that don't need to work in a office and questioning why go back to that lifestyle.

You are really good at focusing on the key points. Health care and public security are really Taiwan's strengths. In the past records, health care is the first in the world, and public security is the second in the world! 👍😄👏 Note: The first place in the world of public security is Qatar in the Middle East! 妳真的很會抓重點,健保及治安真的是臺灣強項, 過去的紀錄,健保是世界第一,治安是世界第二! 註:治安世界第一名是中東的卡達!

@@KaylaCosmos Since you didn't reply for a long time, I thought you didn't want to talk about him, so I deleted that sentence! Mac is an American KZfaqr you met in Vietnam, and you've appeared in several of his videos! It's really a coincidence that he wrote me a message three minutes before you wrote to me, just like last time! He's currently traveling in Turkey, and if you check out his today's video, you can confirm everything I said above! I have seen your videos when you were still in Taiwan, you have a very cute personality, so I told Mac last time that you are a cute girl! Best regards with best wishes, take care! P. S. You might have covered the following question in earlier material (I have only just discovered your work via this video), but what of the linguistic aspects to your expatriation? I presume that you are fluent in Spanish and Mandarin?

Great question! I've actually never discussed it but I'm almost fluent in Spanish -- I can hold conversations, makes friends, etc, but my Mandarin is basic. I can have a conversation but it will be minimal and include many gestures haha.

regarding using the healthcare system too much, I feel like this is a very american perspective on what healthcare should be. we are conditioned to hold off on going to the doctor unless there’s something very serious to address, but I think that mindset is what opens us up for greater and longer term issues. going to the doctor when you feel sick, even if it feels like just a cold, could be the preventative step that stops an even greater issue down the line. a society that goes more frequently than not is probably a very healthy society. aside from being a hypochondriac I don’t think there’s a “too much” when it comes to health.

Thanks for the info. Planning to visit another country find out if it will be a permanent residence for me. Thinking about Spain...but you gave me another place to look into. The US is crumbling day by day. There is nothing that can be done to prevent this. I feel I need to add another tragic event to let people know that it's game over here. Just recently a man cut the head off of a young mother (25yrs old) of 2 kids with a sword. It was hard to believe it at first. But realizing the mental state as a nation and other factors. I truly am over it.
@KaylaCosmos

I encourage you to travel slow and you'll definetly find a place that feels right for you. Wow what a tragic story....it never seems to end and it's disappointing when this happens in a country that's self-proclaimed "the best on Earth" Sure, it's better than a lot of places....but for a developed nation we are far behind. Best of luck of your move!

A Philly girl. Heyyyyyy...... I grew up in Chester. Don't hold that against me. I hear you on that. I plan to retire early and those are my prime reasons for becoming an expat when I do. Healthcare and safety although my safety concerns are more towards police related injustice and the justice system in general here. I've never felt more safe than when I'm outside of my own country. I makes no sense. Also I do find that other cultures are less materialistic and more communal. I'm sure you see in both Vietnam and Colombia how people are out and socializing. As a result of my travels I came back and totally downsized. We just have to have here, and the debt loads we carry as a result of it are stressful. I've been to enough places and seen enough of other cultures to know that is another way, and for some, it's just better. I'm excited for you to have had this experience. I loved Vietnam, and I also love Colombia. Colombia is my destination. I'd love to see if you ever do (or have done) a video on how Safetywing works in the various countries. Really enjoying your content.

@@KaylaCosmos I’ll co-sign on that. I lived in Manhattan for several years and always felt safe. I’ve never felt safe in Philly (I work in Bucks County, but live in Jersey) and I’ve never seen anything like it. Some areas, like Kensington, look post-apocalyptic. As of now, only Center City is halfway decent.

@@johnwilliams3745 thanks for you input John! I remember the first dead body I saw in Philly was at 17th and Market at like 4 PM on a weekend. A block later a woman tried to rob me (not violently) but I swung back at her while she tried to stick her hand in my bag and waited a moment to see if it would escalate. I never felt comfortable living on Kensington but shit can happen anywhere in Philly.

Right on the money about the healthcare and safety in a urban environment in the US. Other then gun issues and Row vs. Wade, the recent inflation is putting lots of pressure on average Joe. I lived in Taiwan before and see your points. However, too many four-letter words are used. Don’t get bothered, it’s just me. Cheers from Dallas, Texas.

I have a serious question: are people leaving the US? Are baby boomers leaving? OR are millennials with remote-tech-job leaving? What do you see around you?
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 2 жыл бұрын
Ohh that's a great question. Personally I'm connected with more digital nomads and freelancers -- here in Medellin there's a lots of US business owners living here. But depending on the company (if working for someone vs employed), one still might not be able to stay abroad long term. In regards to baby boomers, I think so but where I am I don't often meet them. I don't think it's THAT MANY of us in contrast to the US population, but I would say there is definite growing dissatisfaction making more people consider leaving.

You forgot to mention the deplorable mental state of most people in the US and the fact that nobody gives a shit about anything and people don't have friends, they don't seem to care they don't have any friends, until one day they'll need them, at least a good one and they'll realize how lonely and fucked up they are.

Where I live I feel quite safe. I think there are a lot of social issues and poverty so you can find sketchy situations but I think if you practice common sense safety tips, it's quite decent. I do feel better in Medellin than I did in Philly. But for sure, Taiwan is safer than both.
