In today's video I am going to be covering two separate days of hunting. The goal was to do some more Woodcock and Grouse hunting and it paid off! My Dad and I had an awesome time upland hunting! We managed to successfully harvest a near 2 man limit of Ruffed Grouse (not all on footage) in one day and shot a couple others a couple days later! We shot a couple American Woodcock both days as well which is fantastic for this time of year, though they're definitely starting their migration and 1 Snowshoe Hare! I hope you all enjoy!

Are we allowed to hunt over logging roads in ontario?
@LakesnWoodsOutdoors
@LakesnWoodsOutdoors 11 ай бұрын
Little controversial but my understanding is any maintained and in use ones, no. If they're old and unmaintained, yes! There's always been conflicting information on the legality of hunting roads that are still in use by logging companies because they're theoretically not maintained nor are they a legitimate roadway so technically you can hunt them but if you're unsure and simply want to be safe, just scare the birds off the road 30 feet and you're able to shoot them!

you must aim pretty far in front of the bird to not get any pellets in the mat eh? do you guys use a turkey choke too?
@kristintourville948
@kristintourville948 8 ай бұрын
I commented before watching the entirety of the video, I now know which choke you guys use, pretty impressive though, I was always taught to carefully aim for the head, no way in heck would I be applauded for shooting a grouse as it flies, I'll look into that more
@LakesnWoodsOutdoors
@LakesnWoodsOutdoors 8 ай бұрын
@@kristintourville948 We commonly shoot them on the wing but also shoot tons on the ground, generally when we're wing shooting Grouse we're also targetting Woodcock, being that they're so small we tend to run Cylinder, Skeet or Improved Cylinder chokes and are forced to use them for Grouse too, personally I don't find any issues with these chokes and very rarely get many pellets in the meat, issue being if you run a tighter choke you're more likely to simply blow up a bird especially when they're flying directly away from you, though when I shoot them on the ground I use Modified, Improved Modified or Full, the tighter the better for clean headshots and 0 damage to the rest of the bird!

Every location is different, focus around alders, aspens with sparse conifers mixed in, sometimes driving the roads at the right time of day is good, but sometimes you need to get into the bush to find some birds. Best of luck!

I thought Woodcock came under the Migratory Bird Act ? Am I wrong ?
@LakesnWoodsOutdoors
@LakesnWoodsOutdoors 7 ай бұрын
You're not wrong! The confusing part is that even though they're "protected" under the migratory bird act, there's a few exceptions to certain species such as Woodcock and Snipe amongst others. If you look up the migratory bird hunting regulations for Ontario you will see all the different species you're legally allowed to hunt that are protected migratory birds, to hunt these birds you need a migratory game permit on top of your standard licensing to target them.

As much as I understand that point of view, it’s completely legal, I am fully capable of wing shooting as presented in this video but if I have a very clean and ethical ground shot opportunity I am gonna take it all day, wing shooting wounds far more birds than ground pounding does.
