Great Big Story

Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

In 1989, Mauro Morandi’s boat docked on Budelli Island off the northern coast of Sardinia, Italy. Discovering that the island’s caretaker was retiring within the next two days, Mauro decided to extend his stay indefinitely and step into the role himself. Little did he know that, nearly 30 years later, he would still be there. Mauro has built a small, simple life for himself on the island, collecting rain for drinking water, and building solar panels for electricity. Living alone, his love for his island paradise runs deep, and he hopes to stay as long as his health allows it.

As an Italian, I loved this video but I feel sad that the actual history of Butelli was not covered at all, so there are some facts about this beautiful island: - The only period in which the island was inabitated was in prehistoric eras, no modern settlement has ever been established on it. - The 'Pink Beach' that you see briefly on video owes its magnificent color to the shells of Miniacina miniacea, a foraminifera that lives in the habitat around the rhizomes of Posidonia oceanica, the most important flora in the Mediterranean Sea. Over time, however, the beach has lost almost completely its color due to the human behaviour explained in the video. In 1994, the Pink Beach has been put under severe regulations, and now is forbidden to access, walk, rest and even swim near it. In recent years, the park has given the possibility to visitors to walk on the hill that surround the beach, and boats have to stop at least 70 meters away from the shore. - Since 1800, the island had been private property, sold and brought by several people over the years, until a New Zealand man made an offer to buy it in 2015. All of sudden, a national campain started to prevent Butelli from being brought once again, in order to preserve its beauty (even if the new buyer had promised to mantain all the rules that were already established to preserve the natural state of the island). In the end, a sum of 3 million euro was put together to add the island to the already pre-existing National Park of the Maddalena Archipelago, but since then Mauro Morandi, the man in the video, has reported the fact that the Italian government is not taking care of the island at all, especially regarding the matter of the plastic waste that comes from the sea.

@@dirt1688 True. There is nothing wrong spending time with people. But it is always best to learn to live comfortably in solitude or being "alone". In our time, loneliness is not a matter of being physically isolated. We have a pandemic of superficial over-connected people -- people now feel lonelier even in a group, having lots of friends, lots of sex partners/encounters and in even having numerous group activities -- all to keep up with the appearance of being sociable. "And these are all the objects people give to the sea. They are very generous, aren't they?", that hit hard. And the way he looks at it with such disappointment of the rest of the human race

Great story but so much left uncovered. Please do a part 2!Would have been interesting to hear about his life before, what was his profession, did he have family, what happened to them, why he didn't want to talk to anyone for years, how did he find the island (besides "by chance"). Also how does he live? Does hunt or fish? What kind of fruit and veg grown on the island? What about the plants he takes care of? Where would he go if his health deteriorated and he had to leave?

What an amazing man. My dream is to rebuild a skoolie/ rv / etc.. and travel. I want to wake up, make a great cup of coffee and drink it outside and enjoy the scenery. Campfires, mountains, creeks, oceans, I could go on and on. These are things I crave! My last kiddo is about to graduate and go into the military. I own my home. I love this house so, so much. The ONLY way I would ever sell it is to buy a big vehicle to remodel and live in full time. Out right buy it. No payments. Point being (lol) I get this guy in the video. I personally need a bit more social interaction but not much. He is blessed having all this time there. ❤️

What an interesting human being, I am fascinated with him and his lifestyle. What a mentally strong and healthy man. Never been sick in 29 years, not even a cold, wow. And here we are in the rest of the world with Covid-19 causing immeasurable suffering and death globally. I am happy this man does not have to endure that. He doesn't even have a dog/cat/ or other type of pet for company, but then again, I bet he has befriended all the wildlife there. He is probably like St Francis of Assisi but on Budelli Island. All the best to him!
