Mulan Reaction is today's video!
Hey everyone! Join me as I watch Mulan today! I saw this once when I was a child and didn't really remember anything from it so we are watching it again!
Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.

Just to let you know, a heavily believed theory about the Stone Dragon not awakening is because it was already awakened: Mulan. When Mulan prepares to leave for the army, there are multiple images of dragons, starting with Mulan siting at Stone Dragon Statue, her sword hilt being a dragon, and other images. Mulan is the stone dragon preparing to defend the family. The song about her reflection showing what she is inside also comes back in the battle against the Hun Army. Mulan looks into the reflection of her sword and sees a mountain.

Back in those time terror tactics was the norm for spreading fear and causing as much chaos and destruction to exhaust their resources and the people would starve to death. This was done to force them to submit or die.

I find it interesting that Shen Yu didn't comment on Mulan's gender, to him she was "the soldier from the mountain" who fucked up his plan. He respected her as a soldier and considered her a genuine threat, which I think is the highest compliment a villain can give.

@@a.g.demada5263 Yes,Huns and Mongolian's etc weren't senseless barbarians. They were conquerors but their society, even highly nomadic, had some features that were a head of time. There's legend of Khutulun. A mongolian warrior / princess (can't remember right now which she was). Any warrior that lost to her in wrestle would lose a horse. If they would win her, they could marry her. Legend say when there finally was a man who could defeat her in wrestle and married to her, she had 10,000 horses in her stable. But yeah, Mulan is her father's daughter. There's few scenes but I think he was in his youth like Mulan is now. And Cody, yeah you never forget your first day in army or first morning.

Absolutely. I think another reason why he's so great is his unpredictability. The soldiers expect him to be intimidated by the announcement of his arrival or the fact that the odds are against him, when he demonstrates his ruthless and sinister nature. Literally burning the Chinese flag saying, "Perfect.", ordering the execution of a scout after letting them run, and plowing through the imperial army in the village while also leaving the village in ruin. Truly scary villain.

Shen Yu is also a Hun, and while Hun women didn't actively go off to war, they absolutely knew how to fight because, hey, guess whose job it was to protect them while their men were out raiding and pillaging? Attila's daughter challenged would-be suitors to a wrestling match wagering her hand against three of their finest horses as a final test of suitability to be her husband. By the time she actually got married, it is said she presented the resulting 50,000 strong herd of horses to her husband as a bridal gift.

I love how when Mulan reveals that it was her that almost defeated his army, Shan Yu is not like "a girl?!" He sees her as "the soldier from the mountains". This is due to the fact that, unlike most Asian people at the time, the huns and mongols treated women with more respect and dignity, they had bigger roles in society than just marrying. There are hypothesis that the Hun army would also have female soldiers.

What I think is interesting is that Shan Yu doesn't underestimate Mulan as an enemy just because she's a woman. He just sees another enemy, and a worthy one at that. But that is to be expected... while Hun women did not actively go to battle, they learned how to fight just like the men did. Because SOMEONE has to protect the camp while the men are off raiding. Attila's daughter supposedly challenged would-be suitors to a wrestling match, wagering her hand against three of their finest horses, as a final test of suitability to be her husband. It is said that when she finally married, she presented the resulting 50,000 strong herd to her husband as a wedding gift.

I always wanted a scene with someone yelling at Shen-Yu, "Your mother was a Yeti!!" and Shen replying, "How did you --?" then just frowning and charging at them. There were legends of Yeti/Yeren/Sasquatch having children by human mates, who would become enormous and brutal upon reaching adulthood. Well, that was my explanation for the more-than-human villain.

2:12 Assuming Google is ever a reliable source for info, the Great Wall was about 16-26 feet tall with some parts of it looking taller then they actually are due to the ridges on the outside. 12:20 Just to let you know, a heavily believed theory about the Stone Dragon not awakening is because it was already awakened: Mulan. 19:36 Remember! The weights separately represent Discipline and Strength. Shen mentions in the beginning that you need BOTH to reach the arrow. Perfect use of a metaphor 23:38 Ambushing your enemy is extremely effective, even if said enemy outnumbers your own. There are dozens of historical examples, but a personal favorite that comes to mind is the Battle of San Jacinto. General Sam Houston led the Texan Army of about 900 against Santa Anna’s Mexican Army of about 1,500. Long story short, Sam ambushed Santa Anna and won the battle within 18 minutes. I skipped a lot of important context, but the main lesson of the story is: Don’t make camp near the enemy and assume you’re safe when your reinforcements arrive. 24:18-24:58 This isn’t mentioned but very important. Notice the Hun Archers focus their aim on the canons, destroying a bunch in the process. Then immediately after Shen and the group fire their canons with one remaining, Shan Yu makes a cavalry charge without fear of Bombardment. None of that was coincidence, but clear signs of Shan Yu and his leaders planning ahead, and making an *AMBUSH.* If shen’s group had as many canons as they started with, they’d probably be able to destroy the army with bombardment alone, or weaken the army enough to win in close melee, but they lost their canons to the archers, assumedly along with men (the deaths weren’t shown because DISNEY). It’s unfortunate for the Hun Army that one canon was all Mulan needed for an avalanche to happen.

There’s a theory about why the stone dragon didn’t awaken. Before Mulan makes the decision to go to war in her father’s place, she is seen sitting under the dragon in the rain, seeing her reflection before the montage of putting on the armor and leaving. So it may be that the spirit of the dragon lives within Mulan, that she in a way is the stone dragon, which is why the dragon didn’t awaken when Mushu tried to waken it.

I like to think that after the end, Mulan never fought again, because she never wanted to be a fighter, she did it only to protect her father, she's great at it, but she decided to find what she wants to do with her life from this point on instead of doing what she was told to, and she's so peaceful that I find hard to believe she had a carrier in the army after that :) but that's what I want to happen, unfortunately Mulan II really happened ^^

12:24 there is a theory that the great dragon "became" Mulan. That she carries the soul of it, which is why now the stone is just stone, and the dragon is Mulan. When she cried while sitting under it.

12:18 i feel the same way, cody. I just don't understand why the stone dragon didn't woke up. like mushu's gong had the ability to wake up the spirits, so why not the stone dragon??? 🤔

This might sound nuts, but there's a theory that the Stone Dragon's spirit went into Mulan, thus giving her the courage to fight in the army.

Civilians were often targeted in warfare because they want to raid them for supplies and valuables. It would also show how terrifying you were and cut your enemies off from the future supplies the civilians could produce. War has always been a horrible process.

Thanks Cody for recognizing the laws and gender roles in a movie set in ancient China. Some reactors were like “why did Mulan’s father get angry when she spoke out against the officer?” Or they were angry that Shang left Mulan on the mountain after her reveal even though he literally spared her life. It’s not that hard to reason how the culture works back then!

I've heard that the scene where Mulan cuts her hair with a sword, whereas the Western fandom praised the scene's epicness (and thought it meant a new beginning, liberation for Mulan...) it was not welcomed in the Chinese audience, since Chinese soldiers would maintain their hair long. If she were trying to disguise as a soldier, cutting her hair would make her identity as a woman more evident. That is why in the Live Action there is no haircut scene.

My favourite theory about this movie (and my personal headcanon) is that when Mulan made the decision to take her father's place while sitting at the feet of the Great Stone Dragon, SHE became the Dragon Guardian of the family. There is repeated imagery of the dragon in that whole sequence (seeing the Mushu incense holder, the screen going into her parents' room, the pommel of the sword) and that's why the statue never wakes up, because Mulan became the Guardian of the family. This has always been one of my favourite Disney movies for SO many reasons!

The dragon's eyes glowing in the temple symbolizes Mulan's role as the protector of her family awakening, instead of the actual dragon. The reason Mushu couldn't wake the dragon is because the dragon was no longer there. Mulan is implied to be the Great Dragon that protects her family. I googled it, this was the answer
