Other bands followed but the UK has had a cultural bias in regards Australia - seeing us all as quite backward colonials (something that the late Barry Humphries turned into entertainment gold in various comedic personas such as Sir Les Patterson, and Dame Edna Everage). The Bee Gees had some success in the UK by sounding like the Beatles, and losing their Australian-ness. (Originally they were a 5-piece band, though obviously centred on the British born brothers Gibb, the other two members were Aussies - drummer (Frederick) Colin Petersen was actually a child star in the 1957 film “Smiley”). It wasn’t till the 70s that Little River Band cracked the US market for Aussie bands - though there is criticism of them as not sounding “Australian” (they could be any other of the West Coast sound). A criticism that could never be laid at the feet of Midnight Oil (whom you have also reacted to). The Oils unapologetically play songs with Australian character and content.@@playitagainsue

@johnchrysostomon6284 Awesome, thanks John. I appreciate the backstory. Isn't funny how people try to claim bands aren't Australian enough, or Canadian enough or European enough. It is just a way to minimize that particular culture's success without giving the culture their props. If a band is from somewhere then they are, as in your example, Australian. It is so ridiculous really. Australia has so many great bands and artists! 🤩💙

@@playitagainsue they broke up in 1968 when Judith wanted to pursue a solo career and get married. You are right. They were three boys with a kid sister. They had a reunion concert and tour in 1993 and then again periodically thereafter. I’m 75. They have been my favorite group throughout my life. Some of the music they recorded after their 1993 reunion is pop-folk, but deeply spiritual too.

The Seekers have many simply gorgeous songs that still stay strong in my memory from my youth .. This is one of their very best, and yes, it was No.1 in the UK and Australia .. "The Carnival Is Over" is an achingly sad but beautiful song, also written by Tom Springfield, and is another of their most famous hits .. Their biggest hit in the US was the delightful "Georgy Girl", which made No.2 on Billboard ( and No.1 on Cashbox ) in 1966, and Tom Springfield composed the music for it. A few of my other favourite Seekers songs ( so many to choose from ! ) are "Someday, One Day" ( by Paul Simon ), "Love Is Kind, Love Is Wine" ( by rhythm guitarist Bruce Woodley ), "Red Rubber Ball" ( Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley ), "A World of Our Own" ( Tom Springfield ),"Island of Dreams" ( Tom Springfield ), and "When Will The Good Apples Fall .. Check some out Sue .. They're wonderful !

Really liked The Seekers. A friend grew up in the circus, bearded lady, rubber man and all that and her favourite was "The Carnival is over". Wonder why?😁Judith was tiny with a huge voice and her fellow band mates, Athol, Bruce and Keith terrific as well. Another fave of mine was "Morningtown Ride". They were right up there with The Beatles and other big 60's groups. They had a lot of association with Dusty Springfield and the Springfields. The Bee Gees wrote "Massachusetts" and offered it to the Seekers but for some reason their manager didn't pass it along. Good for the Bee Gees because it was their first #1 in the UK. When Maurice Gibb died unexpectedly, they did a lovely version of the song in tribute.

This mid 1960's gem, about early 1965, went to #4 on Billboard Hot 100 in the USA. in retrospect for me this song is soundtrack in my life that opens up memories and feelings of lost relatives, and my original immediate family entirely gone but me, form those days. I am the last one left..."I know I'll never find another them..." Life was simpler then, it;s been nearly 60 years since 1964/65. Fore was no one running in the streety with military automatic weapons mowing people down, nor did most feel the need for anything more than a hunting gun, unless you were a crook. However it was not a perfect world by any stretch. But it was slower paced. that's why we have such a beautiful tune here, no tricks, just talent and heartfelt themes. or just fun rock and roll. Folk music like this was still lingering for a couple years...songs like We'll sing in the Sunshine by Gale Garnett, groups like the Seekers, Peter Paul and Mary, Motown, the Beach Boys etc., and of course the Beatles ruled the airwaves then. the Rolling Stone s didn't really take off until Summer 1965 with "Satisfaction."
