A golden demon sits on the shelf and looks a bit dusty. The Grimdark spacemarines people have painted, the beginner who pushed themselves to try something new and the community you've created to help push people to just enjoy the process. I Imagine those sit in your heart.

The skill that goes into painting award winning pieces is exceptional but as you inferred, now days the bar is so high, if people want to be competition painters they almost have to make it their main focus in life, which, unless you are a commision painter, most people don't have the time or space to fit in that level of commitment alongside other goals. You're lucky enough to have seen the competition side of things and now you've settled on a part of the hobby that you enjoy and made a successful job out of it which to me is very admirable.

I've seen a ton of your minis and they are inspirational as funk, you probably just focus on the things you don't like and forget that other people probably don't even notice that, so when you compare yourself to others remember you're doing so with a bias. I don't believe the other painters are better or out of your range...I do believe you don't want to focus all of your time and effort on painting the way they do, because I would bet if you did, you would accomplish that task. You're my favourite painter because your minis inspire me, and I love your blunt honesty because I know it's not easy giving critiques, however, it is beneficial. I usually get my besty to critique stuff because he tries to find things I can improve and doesn't just tell me it's great...sometimes it irritates me, but it always helps me improve.

Another thing is the talent pool has grown so much more and so many more people are using so many more advanced techniques that are shared across platforms that never used to exist. Its good for the painting hobby but it also makes the skill curve much greater in the " areas of the work. Your stuffs great and just do it for your own reasons. If ever you want to try it again, its always an option. Thanks for all the cool videos and skills you share!

These videos are really interesting and particularly your analysis of the GD afterwards (with bad GW pics lol) since you won it multiple times. A kind of interview (like the one you did with Vince) but not super long with another GD competitor about how they prepare for GD would be really interesting. You said it on stream I think that some painters prepare everything months in advance whereas others just go with their inspiration but doit for 100+++ hours.

The first video I ever saw from you was the grimdark blood angels. I am from a D&D background, so I had never bought warhammer before, but when I saw how cool your models looked, I HAD to buy them and try it out. Now, two years later, I'm loving 40k and 100 models into the hobby, and i consistently have people tell me they love the way i painted the model. I always point them to your video 😂 You are stellar, and I wouldn't have these sick space marines without you, bud. Stay awesome.

Great video, i always like these introspective videos. From a personal standpoint I know I'll likely never win a golden demon as I'm a average painter who cant afford the time to give to get to that level. i think id like to challenge myself to paint something to enter just for the feedback and it would be nice to experience it at least once. BTW, as a father of a five year old I totally get how its exhausting to get up :) they're getting faster while you're getting slower. Though im looking forward to picking up the new Seraphon models from GW, he loves dinosaurs and I think it would be a nice project for us both to have a go at, this is also something for yourself to look forward too.

It's nice to hear this perspective from someone that has first hand experience at painting to such a high level and then deciding to take a step back from it, and the reasons why. It's how I image the impressionism movement came about. It's always good to learn like the masters but it's also nice to be able to take a step back once in a while and express yourself with your art without restrictions. And one piece shouldn't consume you.

I hear you. Competitions ruin the fun of things. I used to enjoy shooting, for the fun of it. But I can't be part of a gun club and not join the competition (according to their rules), so I quit shooting. I tried learning Spanish on DuoLingo. But because there's a score board, I had to be Nr. 1 and this turned learning Spanish into a competition and so I had to quit, because I'd be losing sleep and learning to a point where the obsession of being Nr. 1 just becomes unhealthy. This obsession has ruined many hobbies for me and I even have to be selective about the video games I play. Because if it includes a high score board, I'm no longer having fun.

All I'd say is never say never, but everything you said was fair. I've enjoyed painting for Golden Demon since I entered my first last year. I'm uber competitive myself but have always seen it as just a way to test myself against the better painters. I also really enjoyed meeting other great painters, so that has become more of the fix for me, do I want a Demon, hell yeah but I think realistically I know I've got so much more to learn and develop before I'm close.

When I fell into this hobby I had an only one idea - I want to paint all these cool models as they (professional painters) do! I started it approximately in 2015 (but with long breaks) and those days there were only a few channels which could provide me with high quality material about painting. I also thought that someday I'll be able to attend events like GD with my models, but the more time passed, the more and more professional painters got into my sight how do this for living (but maybe for some of them it's still a cool hobby). Those days I've painted 3-4 models in a year. Daily routine, chores and so on were a great obstacle to devoting more time on painting. When I eventually set-up my workshop my progression began to grow up. I was able to paint models every day after the main job that I do for living. And only the I realized that my 1,5-2,5 hours a day that I can allow me to spend on painting models, it's just nothing comparing to them and it slightly demotivated me to participate such events, but still it inspired me to keep painting models at least for myself (especially since I've already bought pile of models that, most probably, I'll never paint). I stopped worrying about Golden Demon, Crystal Brush and similar contests - I've started doing it for myself. And the other reason that helped me to overcame this eagerness to participate contests - judging. I've watched some of events and in each of them I notices that they're really subjective and sometimes judges are really biased if they think that someone's work is better than others. On sites like CMON, Putty&Paint and so on there lot of community that really praise works of their acquaintances and skip not less good works of newcomers or people who posting not often. I understand that this is simple subjective judging and don't complain about it, but understanding of these processes really helped me to stop worrying about expecting objective evaluation of my works. i understood that the only person who's opinion is important for this - it's me. If I'm not satisfied, the I do better. If I like how it turned out - I'm happy! (yes, I know that only by criticism of more competent persons I can be better, but still). It's just helped me to do it for myself :)

I remember way back seeing Golden Demon published in WD magazine (and once visiting a big city seeing a winner in one of the GW stores and seeing how good the winning models were!). The ones that stood out to me, as a complete arm-chair observer: 1. Concept 2. Context 3. Painting Skill CONCEPT: I felt taking a given model of a given race and doing 2 things: 1. Epitomizing that lore as GW put 2. Creating an original take on that lore. Eg new colour scheme for the model's background no one thought of eg. edit eg your Tau and Necron models give a taste of doing both 1 and 2 here. CONTEXT: Fleshing out the base, adding/modifying and changing the composition of the model all added to the model, and made it more alive eg a forest character needs some reference to trees etc. The Chris Claymore models are good egs here. PAINTING SKILL: It's all above bringing the above 2 to this execution. The stuff that I can't even describe lacking the artistic know-how, but things like shadows and light, colour patterns, realism eg weathering and all that magic, emotion in the face if possible etc. That shadow on that sword and cloak and face was crazy good eg. As for painting, I enjoyed how peaceful it was painting miniatures and the colours application giving a feeling of "breathing to life" in a project. Painting for results might ruin that enjoyment?

Reminds me of the beginning of every other sport like ufc. Royce Gracie won multiple ufc titles in the beginning but if he fought a modern ufc fighter he wouldn’t have a chance. He was still good enough to beat most anyone today but not the very best. The game has just evolved and advanced so much, the chances of winners from previous generations even in their prime being able to compete now is unlikely

I guess with competition stuff (especially after winning several golden demons) it´s more about knowing you "could" do it again than actiually doing it. You can rest well sir - you did it. There is no end to competing again and again and again - teaching the mastery one has achieved and getting the credit for it is the highest goal one can reach.

Even the thought of programming after work just feels so draining. I think part of why is there's not enough time to get "into" it. I have maybe 2 hours per day to program in my spare time. By the time I'm really getting "into" it, it's time to go to bed.

It's like in any other career. You start as an employee, or an athlete, or a soldier. Do your job well, compete with others. Then transition into a leadership, teaching, and training role, to enable the next generation to outdo the previous efforts.

I think it would be actually a really great video series where you paint a mini to the highest standard. Because for me it's really hard to understand what you do on a mini for like 50-100 hours +. Your minis look so amazing after like 20 hoers already. And I have the same thing after 20 hoers I don't know where the next steps are. So it would be actually great for me to see where you would but in so Mitch Time

My friend Trovarion ,for me a old 3 times lucky GD winner(2 silver and 1 bronze),the main problem is there is nno more any GD competition here in France..so way to much expensive to travel England or Usa and don't speak of the ultra concentration of great painters now struggle in every category coming outside or locals...

Yes, it's a shame. I usually don't have the budget either to travel to any of these.

Has to be that skink that won the slayer sword. It was painted to perfection and didn't need an elaborate base or being a giant complex mini.

What you say makes a lot of sense. After all, it's a "friendly" competition, and you have proven yourself (to yourself mostly, I suppose) over and over again... so if the spark, as you say, is no longer there, and your main focus is content creation and teaching, you should follow what you think makes most sense for you at this point in your life.

I think recent golden demon mini are in a weird style, a style of glowing, shiny (even for skin)perfect paintjob that are technically awesome, but that I dislike, I prefer many more minis like the space marine grimdark you have paint

I think there need a new tournament that is not control by GW. You can still have the 100 hours+ group but you can have more. I would love to see a terrain grouping. I say a unpainted kit bashing set up. A 1 hour paint job contest.

Concerning the quality, I Just checked Warhammer Vault and found a White Dwarf from 2004-ish. The level is ridiculously better nowadays. It's nuts.

I personally really don’t like recording videos about painting. To make a good video on which people can see what I do, I have to sit in a very uncomfortable position, and I can barely see what I’m painting 😅 for some reason it’s also very stressful to me 😅

@@trovarion I’m glad to hear that too! My Lieutenant Tolmeron is the first miniature about which I didn’t make any video tutorial, and painting him went much, much quicker and and was so much more pleasant. That’s why I decided to stop making videos for some time. 😁
