I am so sorry. I know that all to well. My dad committed suicide when I was 16 because he had a massive gambling addiction. I have experienced it first hand what it does to a family. It tears it apart. The gambling industry and the government do not give a f#@k about us families that have to live with someone who is or was a gambling addict. Something needs to change

My initial reaction when he spoke of "interactions with my wife" was you mean he still has a wife?!? Then I saw that he was only 25 but has lost $500,000 in sports gambling. Seems like the wife isn't too worried because he's making a bunch of money. She needs an eye-opener because it can get much worst and she's in as much jeopardy as he is. Wishing him well...

This touches home, I had an addiction in sports gambling for awhile I was ignoring my wife and my children and to the point where I watched games not for fun but for money and points. I one day just cold cut it all out everything. I even stopped fantasy football and everyone didn’t why. After that day I can see sports normal again and enjoy it and most of all I watch it with my family who my son loves soccer. I’m rooting for this caller think of your wife and tell yourself I can’t live without her and cut off the addiction it’s hard but doable

this is currently me. i cold cut 6 weeks ago banned myself from the apps i was using. i racked up some debt because i was hitting parlays and overspending on my credit cards telling myself i would pay off the whole amount since i would hit for decent amounts like over 10k multiple times during the year. even with those hits i was still down pretty big because i would just bet bigger when i hit. i went on a massive loss streak and then eventually just borrowed money from my next check. i can see sports not being so unhealthy if i were to just straight bet but im not disciplined enough to just bet like that. i dont trust myself to come back to it. i felt my mood dependant on whether i won or lost during the day was changing. when i lost my focus at work was not there. i would sleep terrible on close wins. i would rather sweat games than do financially better decisions. i made money in stocks just to punt it on bets. so 6 weeks in, im hoping this can be permanent but every day is a battle. as of now i dont even pay attention to sports. my first website look of the day isnt espn anymore. my first app opening isnt a sportsbook. ive deleted those but there are still ways of betting sports. theres infinite ways. i just hope i can avoid these. my mood has been much better. my sleep better. paying off all my debt and im like 60% there. i know i can do this. ive been a degenerate for too many years. maybe i got tired of getting torched too many times. the fun isnt there for me anymore.

From a man in his fifties who was betting 5K hands of blackjack at 17, I can offer some hope. Runaway gambling addiction is a sickness, but it's still not something you're addicted to in the true sense. You're more addicted when you're doing it. But from someone who had to stop doing a lot of bad things in his life, not gambling was the easiest. Just talking from a strictly behavioral aspect. You might jones to do it, but it's not a withdrawal kind of thing. It's not a true addiction like drugs or alcohol. It's a behavioral and mental flaw and if you stop doing it, that goes away, though your mental wiring might be totally different. It kinda ruined sports for me in a way. It's hard to watch an NBA regular season game sober with no money on it. Bet 30 grand on it and it's like a New Year's party at Leonardo DiCaprio's house.

I'm rooting for the caller. Not everyone understands the seriousness of an addiction like this. They wrongly assume that he makes plenty of money to support a habit like this. At the rate he's going, he could be caught taking money from his work to support the addiction, so he'd lose his job, several years of freedom by getting prison time, and his marriage would be in shambles. That's what awaits him if he doesn't get help now. I'm praying for complete deliverance from this ever-tightening vice. God is able. A support group is a great place to start.

This man is not ready for GA. He keeps asking how to start the process - the answer hasn't changed throughout the call. Dr. John repeats his message from start to finish. This man is totally in denial, thinks he's "not that bad" to need GA, or thinks it's full of degenerates and losers and he's above them. He hasn't hit his rock bottom and in a year, he'll be 1 million in the hole. Maybe then he'll hit bottom. Hoping for the best for him but he's really not ready. He is calling because he's in debt and scared. Not because he thinks it's a problem. He thinks the debt is a problem. Not the actual gambling. I feel terrible for him.

I am glad I never got into gambling. Sometimes my work takes me to Vegas, and even of I am staying in a hotel with a casino, I can't bring myself to throw even $10 away on a slot machine "just for fun". Unless you are highly skilled and treat it like a job, gambling on a regular basis will result in you losing 95% of the time. P.S. imagine what this guy could have in investments and assets if he'd not blown that money on gambling.

WOW the statistics on how much money spent on just sports betting is absolutely horrific. 😮 I am a child of a dad who committed suicide because he was a massive gambler. This is an addiction that we rarely ever take about. Majority of suicides they believe now is related to gambling addiction. This is a huge society problem which the government promotes. In the Uk in 2018 the gambling agency made 14 billion pounds for the year and in that year they spent 10 million pounds on education purposes and warning about gambling. These governments are making billions of profit off the sickness of addiction to gambling. 30% of their profits come from gambling addicts. That is absolutely horrific. Australia has the highest rate of suicide by gambling and it has the highest rate per capital of losses in gambling as we have the most pokie machines. China is the worst in the world and I believe the USA is about the 7th in the world. This is an addiction that needs to be spoken about daily.

So I don't drink alcohol at all. For people who find it impossible to make a 5 dollar bet , the best thing for them is to not bet at all. For most gamblers if they make a wager of 20.00 dollars winning 18.00 plus their 20.00 back is not enough to walk away for the day. It's like me with alcohol they want the jackpot that doesn't exist.

I commend the last caller for taking control and reaching out for help. Frustrating thing in the LDS/Mormon community, people are not fully truthful with their fiancés or spouses about their addictions and there’s not enough resources in the LDS community for addictions bc there is a belief that addictions aren’t really a problem. Church leaders aren’t equipped to help members with addictions either, have no counseling training or qualifications. Lots and lots of denial. His wife is only so wonderful at the moment is bc she has NO IDEA how bad the reality is. Not only that, he MARRIED HER WITHOUT HER KNOWING. He didn’t want to tell her beforehand bc of the potential there was to drive her away. I can’t even begin to express what a betrayal this is and I don’t think this has occurred to her yet. He needs a form of rehab, NOW. And he has the money for it so zero excuse. Without it, his marriage will not last.
@velocirapture89
@velocirapture89 Ай бұрын
It’s true, but things are improving. There are more resources now than ever before. The Church tends to focus so much on pornography issues, though, that most members have forgotten how the leaders used to absolutely rail against gambling and other compulsive behaviors. Ultimately, people need to take greater responsibility for their own lives.

It is... 10 billion divided by 582,000 homeless people (estimated) in the USA and that only comes out to 17,000$. I guess you could put every homeless person in an apartment for a year with 10 billion. That MIGHT help fix the issue; if they could get in at least an apartment they could start working and providing for themselves... But we both know most people are homeless by choice because they make great money panhandling out on the street.

Gambling is awesome. Nothing is more fun for me than gambling. It’s exhilarating, exciting, and it can also be painful. But it’s something that needs to be kept in check and it needs to be done responsibly. And keeping it in check requires discipline. As a recovered drug addict and someone who’s a big gambler who has also lost hundreds of thousands of dollars gambling, I understand it. And gambling isn’t an addiction. You don’t suffer withdrawals from gambling impulses. Just don’t do it. Have the discipline to avoid it if you can’t afford to lose it. Walk in to the casino with cash you can afford to lose, and have the discipline to leave when it’s gone. Have the discipline to leave your debit cards at home. I disagree with what he says about discipline. He’s wrong, I promise you.

This happens to me every month when I get paid. That’s how I found this video. I have been through the gut wrenching soul sucking pain of losing everything so many times. I don’t have money to pay my bills. My family and friends all see me as a gambling addict. I don’t know how much I’ve lost over the last 5 years, but it’s easily more than $120K… I woke up this morning feeling the pain of losing and once again, the regret of not walking out of the casino up over $4K. 32 hours of no sleep, no food… just gambling in the casino for 32 straight hours, with so many opportunities to walk out with thousands of dollars but ended up walking out with zero once again. So you’re wrong. But I have also struggled with drug addiction, and this does not even compare. I have more of a discipline problem than an addiction when it comes to gambling.

The problem with gambling is when you have a wining week/month it doesn’t feel at all like an addiction, it feels good lmfao. Also spending money you’ve won feels 1000x better then spending money you earned. It’s very hard to control but the key is to only play for fun. Not to TRY to cover your bills. It has to be expendable extra income.
