It's not often I wake up an think "wow, I can't wait to review another SUV!". In fact, I never think that...
But I had a ripper time reviewing the facelifted 2023 Mazda CX-5! It brings a bunch of new changes into an already sweet package, and an engine that can actually put a smile on your face. So what's so good about the 2023 Mazda CX-5? Let's talk about it!

9:52 Regarding the "faux wood" finish. It's a common, comment. But truth be told, it's actually REAL Japanese sen WOOD. The Japanese craftmen found a way to polish and lacquer it to make it appear like metal. Problem is, they've taken real wood and changed it to be something so different to wood that in doing so it makes it appear fake. Hence the "faux" comment is justified.

Looks are not everything., Compare it to the competition. If you like driving and reliability, take the Mazda. If you like tech, take the Kia. If you like AWD, take the Subaru. If you like fuel economy, take the Toyota. They're all basically the same price. Market forces.... That said, the interior might "look" old - and it is - it's circa 2017. But it has the best materials by a country mile compared to anything it is competing with.

5:00 Sorry guys, Mazda won't phase out the diesel. Also there has been one minor issue which required a recall in around July 2012 on the first iteration of the engine. This was fixed with firmware and a different dipstick (I know because I was involved with the recall). Aside from that Mazda diesel is unique and easily one of the best on the market. Why? First is that Mazda is the first and only producer of low compression diesels. Most manufacturers go with the tried and tests 18:1 or 16:1 because it's easy and doesn't require additional engineering to make it work. It's been like this for decades. But over those decades there has been a lot of academic research into this being potentially the wrong compression ratio, and that by going as low as 14:1 would achieve lower CO2 emissions. No car maker was willing to put in the R&D though.... Until Mazda did. 14:1 has a LOT of wins. 1st win - much, much, much quieter. 18:1 is tractor. 16:1 is light tractor. 14:1 becomes more petrol like. Less NVH, higher rpm - it's just more easy to live with. Want to test this out? Park a Mazda next to a VW Tiguan or BMW diesel and you notice a difference. One of them will sound like it belongs on the farm - and it's not the Mazda. 2nd win - naturally lower CO2. This is an interesting one, because back in 2012 Mazda wanted to export this engine to the US. But US EPA rules are super tough. The worked honestly to meet emissions. Meanwhile VW exported the diesel Tiguan. Odd because due to the 16:1 compression ratio, it has higher CO2 emissions than the Mazda. But we know that VW cheated (Google Dieselgate). This ruined the party for everyone. VW was sued and Both the German and Japanese government did internal audits on their car manufacturers. Germany didn't publish results, but it's widely known that did publish results, because every car maker was cheating. Japanese also audited and one surprise occurred.... all car makers except Mazda were noted to have cheated. See: "Japan Releases (Nasty) Diesel Test Results, Germany Sits On Them" - www.forbes.com/sites/bertelschmitt/2016/03/05/japan-releases-nasty-diesel-test-results-germany-sits-on-them/ Quote: "Mazda’s new Scyactiv diesel-powered CX5 and Demio (exported as the Mazda2) tested at or near the standard." Turns out that by having a 14:1 compression ratio, Mazda's emissions were naturally low enough not to cheat. And the fact that they spent 7 years of R&D getting their engine compliant of US EPA. (Sadly because of dieselgate, diesel fell out of favour and the US EPA spec engine was frankly underpowered and under torqued to pass US EPA - like a greyhound swapped out for a poodle). So given: 1. Mazda diesel is a different tech leading to one of the most refined on the market 2. They've already released their new in line 6 diesel in Japan .... I doubt that it's going to be dropped. The only issue I have is that currently where I live in Australia, diesel is super expensive at $2.30/litre. At the moment though I am living in Japan, and Diesel is a very cheap $1.30 per litre (which is literally double normal). So Mazda's I see here in Japan are almost all diesel.

Yep, we've had two diesel CX5's, our current 2019 is a keeper. Very quiet and 450nm of torque is as strong as an ox. Never had a problem with either car mechanically . But you're right about the price of Diesel, it's very expensive here in NZ too.

@@greensocks4507 Glad to hear. I have a 2019 CX-8 with the same specs. I find that it prefers to be a country car than a city car. But I imagine (having driven in NZ a few times), there are some awesome scenic roads that would suit you 2019 a lot.

12:03 No launch control, but switch on auto hold (to allow it to hold brake) and then you just need to mash accelerator. You'll get about 0.3 faster. Add sport to mix. Looking forward to the CX-60 reviews. In Europe they're consistently getting 0-100 in 5.7s

Personally I choose to believe american youtuber sonce they seems more professional and serious and have had plenty of experienced compare to this one or any other aussie youtuber. Also like this video mention if you put premium98 its actually produced more hp n torque, not only aussie fuel is less cleaner compare yo any other developed country due to high sulfuric content, this youtuber probably used e10 since why would you put expensive fuel that isnt your car...

They need to offer a hybrid version.....
@inodesnet
@inodesnet Жыл бұрын
Mazda has already announced their progression towards hybrids and EV's. Given their engine tech is quite advanced, Toyota invested heavily to borrow Mazda engines in return for providing Mazda with hybrid tech. Toyota is of course doubling down on hybrid's which I think is a good idea. But I think most people who like driving detest the CVT's that Toyota pairs with their hybrids. CVT's are shocking on anything that needs to be responsive. We have a CVT on our family Honda NBox here in Japan, but in Japan we don't drive anywhere quickly because speed limits around us are all 30km/h. All Japanese brands are addicted to CVT's except one; Mazda. Back in Australia you need to be able to move. Far more responsive driving and you need to press accelerator and know it works - quickly. Mazda's current torque convertor is a real peach. Watch reviews in the US by mechanical oriented channels such as Savagegeese or Car Nut Guy, and they'll go as far as saying it's the best mainstream auto despite the 6 gears - with fact that although it's a slush box (a name given because torque converters rely on oil for energy transfer), the moved the clutch and made it direct connect, meaning it's actually the fasted shifting TC of any mainstream vehicle. But from a peach..... the new TC in the new CX-60 looks to be a massive jump up on tech. It's a multi-plate clutch with 8 gears and is a hybrid. So you can get a hybrid, Japanese (for reliability) and get something without a CVT. Although Kudos must be given to Toyota not only for their hybrid tech, but the fact on some models they've actually added a physical gear to match up with the CVT to help launch. Their "Direct Shift-CVT" is a great idea that should be copied.

Mazda by not making this eng available in the lower variant CX5 you lost out on a sale not everyone wants a sunroof, heated seats big tech screen multi zoned climate. As I said before part reason for Toyotas success is that there must have drive train is available throughout the range not just the range topper

13:14 Although good the Bose in this CX-5 is the old Bose system and is miles behind their new one. For the new one that actually did research with Bose themselves to get the best possible possible with one major, cool change. They took the speaker out of the front door and mounted in on the frame up in the well in a space no one uses. The result was far less vibration (speakers do an awesome job of rattling plastics and door contents), and clearer sounds. See: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZqkg9mX2K6-qX0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLSpgbigrtW3lWQ.html "This is not only the best sound system in its class, it's one of the best out there"

2:20 Considered by automotive reviewers worldwide as possibly the best mainstream red, "Soul Crystal Red" has a history. The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show was a big one. I attended and the Tokyo Motor show makes anything we ever put on in Australia seem tiny. One car stood among all others.... Simply google "2015 Tokyo Motor Show Best Car". The undisputed best car at the show was the Mazda RX-Vision. It became so iconic that it was featured as the hero car in the latest Gran Turismo on PS5. The thing that made it stand out was that it was the first car with "Soul Crystal Red", an extra layered version of the original "Soul Red". The application unlike almost all other cars, is NOT consistent as it is hand painted in layers in very specific directions to accentuate the body lines. It's made far more difficult because modern Mazda's don't have crease lines so errors in application of paint, become very obvious. People were coming to the stand and saying "I need a Mazda with that colour". Mazda's reply - "Not possible!!! This is hand painted". But far too many people were approaching their dealers worldwide. The solution was found. For every vehicle that would be featured in "Soul Crystal Red" would have a test vehicle painted by one of their Takumi's (匠 = Craftsman, Artisan). To be considered the best of the best, the Takumi's needed a minimum of 20 years experience. The Takumi's would paint the test vehicle and be motion captured (similar to what they do in Marvel movies for animation). This progressed later to doing it all in VR. The specific motions of the Takumi's were there turned into robotic patterns that paint robots would emulate in the factory. Regular cars would come through and be painted like any other manufacturer would paint their car. But if a Soul Red Crystal car came through, the robots would switch to the new pattern. Also additional layers were added as this was part of the process. There are four of this very specific paints now in Mazda's line up called Takuminuri (匠 Craftsman 塗 Paint/lacquer). --- There is one major issue though. Because it's so damn hard to paint in the first place, crash repair places absolutely hate this paint as it's very difficult to match. Search KZfaq and there are a lot of crash repair tutorials for this paint, but there isn't really videos for other brands given the paint is applied so carefully. Further to that, a lot of insurance companies have figured this out and charge an extra arm and a leg if you purchase one of these Mazda colours. I suppose the silver lining is that despite charging an extra for this paint, Mazda has the cheapest "special" paint charge of any brand in Australia. That shows honesty for the actual cost rather than the rip offs that many other brands seem to charge.
