Replayability counts as amount fun that you have with the game. Fusion is the most fun Metroid and the most replayable, imo.

Nah. Zero Mission is more replayable for me. Fusion is great and all. But it's way too linear and heavy dialog focus. It doesn't balanced on progression and freedom of exploration from what makes Metroid; well, Metroid.

I actually played fusion for the first time a couple months ago. One thing that surprised me was how similar it was to Other M. That game is criticized for being Linear and making Samus emotional, though both of these are present in fan favorite Fusion. In fact Fusion felt even more linear at times. The games aren't 1 to 1 though, there are still a good number of differences, the largest being there's no SA-X equivalent in M which is Fusions biggest selling point. That and she talks more in M than in fusion. Not going to go into every difference though.

@@Wyrlwind personally I find aspects of it enjoyable. If you ever do I'd say play it for the combat. Controls take getting used to and the story is hit or miss you'll either like it or you won't so temper expectations. I thought it was ok. Samas interacts with stunned enemies allowing for cool in game sequences that are basically a precursor to what we eventually get in dread, this makes combat the most enjoyable aspect of the entire game at least in my opinion. But since there's more to Metroid than combat I always understood why others didn't bother to give the game a try.

Growing up playing zero mission, fusion, and prime since I was in elementary school (now 27 y/o) I’m been a HUGE Metroid fan. It wasn’t until I got my switch that I finally got to play super, and I gotta say, not having nostalgia goggles for that game its aged pretty badly. The level design and music are definitely 10/10 but the controls and way Samus moves are so clunky it makes the game not enjoyable for me. I see a lot of people online saying it doesn’t need a remake because it still holds up today, but I find that opinion far from true, and I think those people are just blinded by nostalgia. Even being a fan of fusion since the year it came out, I would LOVE if they gave it the Samus returns/dread treatment in terms of a remake

As for why the ledge grab (Power Grip) is an upgrade in Zero Mission is due to story reasons. In Fusion since Samus' original suit was corrupted and taken over by the X, her new Fusion suit is much lighter, allowing her to hang from ledges. And since Zero Mission released after Zero Mission, it had to keep up the updated gameplay from Fusion for being on the same handheld, and since it wouldn't have made sense for Samus to be able to grab ledges with her heavy armor, Zero Mission added that by introducing it as a power up. My experience with Metroid was back in 2017 when I kept hearing the name Super Metroid flying around a lot for some reason. So I gave it a try and got hooked really fast. It didn't take me long to beat all the 2d Metroid games to that point - Fusion, Zero Mission, Metroid II, the fan remake AM2R (and Samus Returns when it came out), a bit of NEStroid, and then the entire Prime Trilogy. It has become my favorite franchise as of now with Prime 2 personally being my favorite game, and I hope Prime 4 is able to shoulder with the series as much as Dread did.

You should have tried Zero mission instead of Metroid 1, they are essentially the same game except ZM has all the conveniences of fusion including Saves and a map. Edit:my bad, thought you only had time to try the original as far as 2d, which would have been a shame.

The original Metroid does give you a map in the manual, but it’s extremely vague. It basically just shows you the general direction how to get to each area. The manual also literally tells you to make your own map and there’s descriptions for every item/enemy. Even with all of that the game can still be rough lol

As a fan of Metroid since its first "revival" with Metroids Prime and Fusion, my two cents (or more, judging by the length) on your experiences (and my own) are the following... 1) Metroid Prime's Gravity Suit trap: I don't actually remember if I fell into this back in 2003, but it's a very common experience and seems likely since I've never played the game with the hint system activated. One of the original devs has admitted that it was basically the biggest design flaw in the game, and said something along the lines of "if I could only change one thing about Metroid Prime, it would be making the hint system kick in earlier when you need to get the Gravity Suit to proceed through the crashed frigate." 2) The original adventure: As much as I love the atmosphere, identity and historical significance of the original Metroid, it's... really not a good game. It had a lot of development issues (including getting scrapped halfway through development and redeveloped from scratch), so it lacked a lot of the polish that made the original Zelda more playable. As much as I loathe what Metroid: Zero Mission did in the story department (its core gameplay is excellent, handhold-y waypoint markers aside), my strong recommendation is that a new player briefly tries out NES Metroid just to get a feel for what it was like, then switches to Zero Mission for a more enjoyable and navigable experience, and lastly maybe goes back to the NES game and uses their acquired understanding of the Zebes's layout to make the original more palatable. 3) The Power Grip: For some reason, they really went out of their way to "explain" all the abilities you could acquire in Zero Mission that weren't available in the original game, basically by stuffing them into mysterious locations that Samus couldn't visit on the NES. I'd say it was generally a bad move, and they honestly could have just skipped the Gravity Suit (despite it being my fave), Plasma Beam and Space Jump while making ledge-grabbing Samus can just do from the start. 4) Ability Amnesia: While Metroid Fusion did it extremely well, and Prime 1 and 2 did it... okay-like, I could personally do without any sort of explanation for Samus losing her collected abilities. They should just start each game fresh and not acknowledge it. 5) Dread: The game did fix a lot of the issues I had with Samus Returns on the 3DS (like making the counter-attack system actually enjoyable), but I agree hard on that aspects of it overstay their welcome due to repetition. The way the E.M.M.I.:s are used seems to completely miss the point of why SA-X worked so well, the barrage of Chozo mini-bosses really just got annoying, and the emphasis on trial-and-error repetition for the twitch gameplay-focused bosses was just... too much. At their core, these games have been about exploration, and I know for a fact that a lot of old fans of the series just gave up because of the boss battles. (I was like a hair's breadth away from giving up on two occasions, personally.) Also, the game definitely has some really weird design decisions for its map/layout that haven't ever been in the old games. Like blocking off paths, not updating the map to match, and then just never giving you a way to bypass those blocks. (Or making the passages one-way.) It's obnoxious and actually reminds me of Final Fantasy XI, which intentionally messed with the players to waste their time in that regard. X) Super Metroid: As far as I'm concerned, Super Metroid has the best world design in the entire franchise, and might even be in the top layer for the Metroidvania sub-genre as a whole. The one thing that brings it down is its control scheme, which can be summarized as "the original Metroid 1 and 2 controls with more features stacked on top". If Nintendo were to ever release a version of the game that simply had its controls updated to match Zero Mission (with some tweaks due to there being two more buttons on an SNES controller), I would personally say it's the Indisputable Best Game in the franchise.
