Thanks for reviewing the 31's. I wonder how much harder it would be to integrate a single sub in your system. I imagine that might be quite challenging. Two subs are ideal in any stereo system. I agree with you. Sub woofers changes the sound from 2.5D to 3D in a well setup system. Super important.

I have been an advocate for the right amount of bass for human hearing for a very long time I made this video over 3 years ago looking at the topic on a fundamental level How much BASS does an Audio System need to be Perfect?? More than you might think!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b6mnecehpsu-mKs.html But what I am referring to with the rel 31 partly comes under the human equal loudness umbrella but also there is a little more to it as well, as all subwoofers do that, many are good but less do it quite this good

This is an awesome review you have presented, and your confidence and rationale for endorsing The No.31 is obviously experiential in basis and shine through brilliantly! You really make clear as words could explain what the effects of the 31’s are, and I am sure listening is another realm altogether. Thank you Terry.

Yes Terry it was so easy to relate with your opinion. Just before I stumbled your video had a couple of hours of listening to my system made of Hegel 190 Harbeth p3esr coupled with Rel t7x and my room of 6×4×3 was filled with impressive sound pressure given the miniscule size of the speakers. My sofa was literally vibrating.and I assume the merits were mainly to the sub. And my Rel is only 8 inch and 200w.

What is really interesting - that on 18:05 REL and SF's woofers are out of phase. you can see it even better on 0.5x speed. Great video!
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
Very interesting comment so that is playing the first track on the blade runner 2049 soundtrack, I use that track as it has a lot of extreme deep bass in it that really gets the bass drivers moving a lot which looks cool on camera. I would be amazed if you saw any speaker / sub combo being perfectly in time for the whole of that track with the amount of very deep bass in it. The excursion of the drivers to create the same bass frequencies is not going to be the same but a lot of the time they do line up and it’s all the same track playing for every shot
@bbfoto7248
@bbfoto7248 Жыл бұрын
@Elkemper Good observation. Yes, slowing down the video playback even further to 0.25x speed, the subwoofer and SF mains appear to be completely 180° out of phase, while both look to be in near perfect physical time alignment with their front baffles aligned on relatively the same plane. 😂 What's most important when integrating the mains to subwoofer(s) is that the Phase Through the Crossover Region between the two needs to be as similar and coherent as possible. While seeing the "visual" representation of the diaphragm's phase between the two doesn't reveal the true in-room acoustical phase response, with these two in such close proximity and physically aligned, I don't see how they could possibly be providing anywhere near an ideal in-room phase response with constructive interference. Of course, this is just "B-roll" for visual stimulation and excitement, so there's that. 😉 But it's also quite hilarious to hear Terry's voice and commentary at this reduced speed...has the drunken sailor effect, LOL...start around 17:17
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
Basic phase is easy to test and listen to the difference, often out of phase causes a serious reduction in bass output which is easily audible. The subs were in phase simple as boys basic stuff. Your seeing different driver excursion behavior, no speakers and subwoofers will play very deep bass exactly identically for something like the blade runner 2049 sound track first track, the dual 7 are moving very differently to produce very deep bass to the subs. Its not really music either its just more of a low pressure constant noise type of sample which makes the drivers move a lot - which looks cool on camera
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
Also a very obvious sign is you turn the subs up more and get less bass, that was not happening either - again simple stuff but something that stands out very obviously
@Elkemper
@Elkemper Жыл бұрын
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Haha, man, there is no blaming or attempt to say, that you've done some bad job or anything like that. not at all. it was just very interesting observation, that those was so low frequency, that it could be caught on camera. (presumably it's 60fps) and maybe, just maaaybeee, if this is so low frequency - it's mostly inaudible, so you can not spot phase issues. May be the're is no out of phase on frequencies that are more audible, like 80+, but isn't there a possibility, that speaker could have different phase on different freq range (in extremes, when they roll off)? one more time - i'm not trying to be a smartass, just healthy curiosity.

subwoofer are the life of hifi :) and i sure appreciate the quality of these REL no.31 brings. but i also want to see what happens when you stack cheaper smaller subwoofers and add dsp to get the deep extension. there are smaller sealed subwoofers that is three times smaller and are only focused on sound quality, then you do not need large woofer excursion to get the low bass.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
The interview i did recently with Geoffrey from Ascendo he talked about the effect of the resonant frequency of subwoofers in smaller cabinets being higher. So it’s not just the driver it’s the driver cabinet relationship which effects how ‘boxy’ the bass might be. Very interesting guy I learnt loads from him

That’s the best spot in the room for the speakers bass response where I sit so it’s the best spot in the room for them. Width soundstage outside the speakers is compromised but if the speakers are further from the wall that doesn’t improve it just sounds worse cos the bass is worse. The subs were epic where they were so that is good. The side walls are very acoustically treated which is likely why

Not the best LF that is a very broad phrase, I didn't say that, I said the best musical bass from a subwoofer and best integration between a speaker and subwoofer agin fir music. This is even more of a feat considering the subs big output in my small room and me not using advanced DSP to set them up. I have had 4 1000w 15's in my room and they moved more air but still had a limit to how much pressure I could have before it was too much for the speakers and room.

For being touted as REL's "SMALL Flagship Subwoofer", with their particular and unusual form factor and quite large size they will be difficult to (ideally) place in smaller rooms (as you found), and are space hogs compared to similar price/performance competition. Too bad you can't orient them upright 90° so they take up much less floor space. In addition, I don't find them particularly aesthetically appealing, either, but that's just my opinion and preference. Piano Black Gloss Lacquer is so 1980's to 2000's. 😊 Terry, in my experiments and measurements over many years with all types of subwoofers, I've found there to be better room integration and improved transfer function & efficiency with less cancellations when the subwoofer driver faces the WALL, and not into the room...at least with sealed alignments. As shown in your review, with their placement, and because bass frequencies radiate equally in all directions, imagine the initial wave front and propagation from the subwoofer cone wrapping back around and behind the enclosure and to the front wall boundary behind them, and then reflecting from that front wall boundary forward to the front baffle and subwoofer diaphragm again. Dependent on the distance from the driver diaphragm to the wall or boundary/boundaries, this will cause a severe cancelation(s) at particular frequencies, essentially causing erratic response via comb filtering. This will be even more detrimental if that particular cancelation frequency falls within the crossover region, as it will be difficult to achieve a smooth and natural transition from the mains to the subwoofer. However, if you face the subwoofer cone closer and towards the front wall or boundaries, due to the much shorter distance, any such cancelations will be higher in frequency and essentially out-of-band or not even present due to the crossover. You will also achieve better in-room transfer function or "boundary loading" which improves efficiency and lowers distortion. Have you tried this with any of your subwoofers?

I had subwoofers placed in the front corners of my room for years and sat near field and far field neither time would I have gotten away without serious dsp being needed, granted I didn’t have these subs but I had good subs including 15s stacked on top of each other. I mentioned right at the start that the subs had to be placed so they could be on camera, rel wanted to put them in the corners but I know my room better than that and know where they are you still get corner like room gain in the low end and when I have measured subs in this kind of position before the response has been much better than I thought it would be. Also I find bass seems to blend better with this placement than in the corner too without time alignment controls such as in AV kit. Could be placebo but I moved the left sub forward a few inches and that helped. Always does in my room for some reason. I know your right in terms of the rooms reflectivity but other problems and issues arise too even when you corner place the subs so it’s often the lesser or evils we have to choose. For me that was being able to get 52kg subs on camera without moving them much. I think these are the nicest looking subs of them all personally but each to their own.

17hz at -6dB Seems a bit too bass light for a several thousand dollar subwoofer. A Genelec 7380 is cheaper and doesn't roll off as quick, plus it has room correction, all for thousands less. What is the appeal of REL subwoofers considering there are much better output and specific use case woofers at that price? This doesn't seem to fit any particular niche well.

It’s an interesting comparison because the genelec is a studio sub with 0 attention to detail paid to asthetic so hardly anyone would want that subwoofer in their home only a very extreme person the rel looks lovely and that costs money. Secondly if you go only from the spec sheet -17 compared to -16 @ -6db is no difference in the real world by the time the room comes into play. So that’s no difference the bigger difference is in all the genelic claims 120db output that is a lot a very impressive number. As I said in the video it’s possible to achieve these numbers for the same or less money. That’s not why you buy the rel. In my room for music I don’t need 120db. For room correction I would only want Dirac live and that doesn’t come with the genelic so it’s not of value to me. So it’s horses for courses like everything. Numbers on paper only tell you so much hence my introduction

@@PursuitPerfectSystem So the appeal of this subwoofers the aesthetics? I suppose if someone wants a shape that isn't a box. Just doesn't seem competitive on any level, Even compared to things I would consider expensive for their performance like Genelec. I have Dirac Live by the way... Prefer GLM for a single listening position, but can appreciate Dirac for optimizing for wider sweet spots.

Of course some of the appeal is aesthetics when these big things have to be in your home and style matching to speakers and so on. Speak to people in the real world and that matters more to them half the time as the performance is expected when your spending big money. The fact these sound great in a small room with minimal eq is a testament to their quality. If I installed dual dual 15s in my room the below 30hz bass would be off the wazoo and I would have to eq the shit out of them to make them sound good. That is not a good approach to audio. I used to think it was but less is more when it comes to these things, for music anyway Unless GLM fixes impulse response then it wont better Dirac live for anything maybe it’s just how you have used it as it takes a bit of getting used to

@@PursuitPerfectSystem I don't see how these work any better with minimal EQ than an SVS, HSU, or Rythmik. When spending big money I hope people are more particular and don't just assume performance. I've demo'd $20,000 tiny bookshelves made of instrument wood with no internal bracing and the performance isn't there. Same story with REL: unless you like the aesthetic, the performance isn't commensurate with the price from what I see.

Your basing your opinion on something you haven’t seen or experienced by the sounds of it let alone lived with for a few months maybe doing so would change your mind or maybe what you require from a subwoofer is different to what these offer. Both outcomes are possible. I can see many choosing these rels over the subs you mentioned for the reasons I explain in this video. Some might choose the others for equal reasons that are their own. Neither subjective reason for choosing a product and it will be subjective even if it’s a decision based off a personal interpretation of objective data that’s still a subjective decision by the way negates the other. So it’s all gravy buy whatever you want when I experience better subs in my room I will say so. I have already experienced much much bigger subs that were immense for music but not without a whole host of dsp coming before them and not in a small room
