This is another installment of our mini-doc series "I Am A BJJ Fanatic."
"I Am A BJJ Fanatic" is a series of BJJ videos that covers many aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The series features the Worlds TOP BJJ competitors and trainers to share their philosophies and stories of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In this episode we have the great John Danaher. John Danaher is a world renowned instructor, he is considered by many the greatest bjj mind on the planet.
John has cemented his place in history as one of the best martial arts coaches there will ever be. Some of his students include Gordon Ryan, Garry Tonon, Georges St. Pierre and many others.
BJJ Fanatics was started by a pair of black belts (Bernardo Faria & Michael Zenga) who feel that nothing is more important than improving your BJJ skills as much as possible in the least amount of time. Their aim was to create a shop for BJJ Students who don’t look at BJJ as a sport - but as a lifestyle.

Jiu-Jitsu is addictive because it involves cooperative learning, exactly what western schools lack. Numerous studies by Deutsch show this simple fact: we like solving problems together instead of individually.

In ice hockey, there is the holy trinity; Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr & Wayne Gretzky. What made Orr so great (besides his amazing skill) was he changed/revolutionized the position of defenseman - after Orr we now see defenseman joining the offense & scoring. He changed the game of ice hockey forever. John Danaher has done that for BJJ. He is a true gift to BJJ.

Aside from the discrepancy in expectations and reality, don't forget that injuries and costs contribute tremendously to the high attrition rate. How does a white belt feel after training for maybe 2-3 weeks when he's taken down and hurts his ribs or his shoulder? Then he's out of the gym for a week or two if he's lucky, several weeks if he's unlucky. Then the student finds himself asking, "Is this what I'm paying $180-220/month for?"

JD is one of the deepest thinkers out there, but i think he overcomplicated one thing, the reason that jiujitsu is so addictive and yet has such a high attrition rate as he pointed out, is simply because it is both immensely fun and immensely difficult. very few activities are both of those things to the degree BJJ is. anyway, my 2c
