My junior year of high school was a rollercoaster. Too many surprises and “life-changing” decisions. The college debate is a topic I'm super passionate about but haven't felt confident enough to film an entire video on. Well, I finally did it. I love talking about college stuffs, so feel free to share your questions or thoughts in the comments below...always open to some civil debate as well ;)
ABOUT MY DEBUT NOVEL
My debut novel "Leaving Wishville" is a 2021 Readers' Favorite Bronze Metalist. The story follows fourteen-year-old Benji Marino as he plans to escape from his small, dreary town. With time against him, leaving Wishville might be his only chance for freedom-but it may also cost him his life. Learn more: www.lostisland...

My family is always telling me I must go to college, like it's the most important thing ever. And to be honest, I have a feeling that I have to anyway. I know that being an author, songwriter, entrepreneur, and photographer (probably) won't help me when it comes to making a living; I feel that I'll most likely have to have another job along with those in order to provide for myself. Overall, you're making your own decisions, and it's obvious by the way you're moving that you'll be fine without going to college. I have faith in you, Mel!

Thank you Ryan! I'm not against going to college, but I do think it's good to recognize the possibility of making decent money from creative passions (even as a side-hustle). I used to have a similar belief to you, but "Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow" taught me that a big part of reaching success from doing what you love is improving confidence in your own abilities as an artist/entrepreneur. With the internet, I don't think it's as hard as it used to be, but that's just my take on it :)

I actually kinda see myself in what you've said. Everyone - school, family, friends - is stressing me to know what I want to do in my future. I always thought I had no choice and that I had to graduate good and that afterwards I had to go to college just because I had the grades for it and everyone told me that I could get a great career going. I still have no real clue what to do, but this video made something click in my head and now I suddenly see everything a bit different. Thank you for sharing your story!

The video where you followed Haruki Murakami’s schedule popped up as a recommended video for me. I checked it out and decided to see what other content you had on your channel. This video immediately caught my eye. Let me just say this, KEEP MAKING CONTENT. This is the content that young people need to see. This video was insightful and very inspirational. You show wisdom beyond your years. I ultimately think you made the right decision about not going to college and I don’t think you have anything to worry about, not that you seem worried. I am living proof that you don’t have to follow the traditional college path and can still be successful. Success can be measured in many different ways and you are the only one who should choose how to measure it. Great video and good luck! I subscribed and it will be fun to watch your journey to the top.

I went to university all the way to PhD (where I am now), and studied several different fields - majors, I guess - on the way. In Poland uni is free, so it wasn't a hard decision to just follow whatever topics interest me, and drop out of most of them eventually. Those years influenced me, Big Time. They moulded me into the person I am today. But they also took some things from me. Most of my younger years I wanted to be a novelist. I no longer write these days. I'm not sure if that would be the case if I didn't go to uni and change my perspective so much. I also feel like I'm still lost in the job market and strangely behind my peers in several ways. It's only now I'm establishing myself as an adult. A bit late, honestly. I could never regret my school life, but it did come with drawbacks. Anyway. Do what feels right for you. You're 17; if you feel like studying, you can do that later. Life will shape around you; happiness is something we create for ourselves, not win in a lottery of ever-proper choices.

One of the most real videos I've seen. You're pretty mature for your age. I don't think I would have made your decision at your age (which I think might be the right one). I'm a senior in Math at NYU and tbh idk what I wanna do with my life at this moment and I got a decent amount of debt. At first, I was like how you were, trying to get into some ambitious career path, instead for me it was a PhD. I realized around my sophomore year that academics wasn't for me. And that's when I read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". That's when I got into personal finance stuff and stayed away from avocado toast (Graham Stephan reference). That's when I realized to some extent college is a scam if you really don't know what you wanna do. Right now, I think it's just best to go with the flow but just make sure your finances are in order.

I'm listening to this, here a good while after midnight, and feeling a part of myself breaking. Hearing about your life is reminding me of parts of my own. My passions and the conflict with my addiction to school. I haven't written a single one of my books, I haven't managed to start up on KZfaq, I haven't learned as much of Spanish or Japanese as much as I'd like, nor have I endeavored into entrepreneurship the way I've toyed with. I'm sitting in a community college situation with plans to go to a full university once I'm ready. And while I am working towards *a* passion of mine, being psychology, there's so much I'm setting aside along the way. And the most painful part to me is that I have no real excuse. I have plenty of time to work things out and I'm just not using it.

To be honest, I won't make a decision to not go to college but the thing that you said about kids becoming demotivated to take up creativity related careers when they compare themselves to other friends of their's, is very true. I would say that the golden key to succees is obviously not just education and academics. Its totally up to you because you are the one who is going to do that job and not your friends. Also after watching all the random things that I watch on KZfaq and coming to your channel is a great experience. I love how your content is always about a topic that actually makes sense and forces you to think again and again about something in particular.

Hello, Mel! I’ve been having so many conflicting thoughts about my future, which is considerably absurd considering my age. I’m not even a teenager yet, but I was able to relate to this video far too much. I visited Harvard in fourth grade, and I was absolutely captivated by it. I wanted the college life, I wanted to get away from my small town, and I also wanted to go into the medical field at that age. Being an oncologist was what I tricked myself into believing I wanted or years. It really, really wasn’t. Oncology may have been helpful, fascinating, and a money-maker for sure, but it wasn’t my passion. Stories have been my passion. I would draft them on paper, write fanfiction in my early elementary years, and tell stories with paper cut-outs. I’ve had a passion for story since I was extremely young, but now it’s only grown. I think I was hoping to drop it and forget about it, to ignore what I wanted, but the truth is, I’ve always disliked science and math, as well as school. I’ve always had the highest test scores, the best results on everything, etc. I really thought I liked school for a few years, but recently it feels as if I am drowning. Drowning with the desire to escape this hole I’ve dug myself into. I’m a writer, and I also have an interest in business and entrepreneurship. I don’t think school will help me develop either. I’m not in high school, yet I’ve already shifted through the courses they have there and decided none of them will assist me. There are no creative writing classes in my area, nothing of the sort. I can’t imagine doing school for all these years like I could in fourth grade. It’s not want I want. I want to travel and work on my novels, screenwriting, poetry. I want to also work on my creative projects. My parents insist with my perfect student vibe that I should go to college, that it’d be a disgrace if I didn’t. And so I’ve decided, just this early, that I want to graduate early and also take a GAP year in hopes of convincing my parents the college route isn’t for me. I am young and I have time, yet all of your opinions, right down to the regrets of leaving a STEM career behind, encompasses my opinions as well. Thank you, so much, for showing me that I’m not the only one out there with these views.

I never thought of that possibility. I've always been told "Yeah, you need to go to college or else or won't get a good job or you're not going to be in a good place in your life." "Do good in school or else you aren't going to get into a good college" Personally, I think that for what I want to do I kind of have to go to a place where I can get instruction, whether its just an online program or I apply and go to a college or university. It's journalism by the way. I have just started high school, finished the first week today, so I still have time to really think. This was a great video and really got my mind thinking about the future.

I am a senior in high school and struggling with what I want to do with my life. It is stressful because I know that college is something that my family has always wanted for me (I'm the first(and youngest) of my siblings that could complete college). But I am fully aware that I don't have to go to college to live a good life. I've really been enjoying my anatomy class this, especially since I get to study on my own schedule(because of quarantine), and I sort of want to go into a career like health science, public health, the medical field, etc. But it is not a matter of pressure of family. I love exploring how the human body works and how it reacts to changes, but the problem is that with some things I love them initially and quickly become disinterested(what I'm afraid of). The conflict is that I also like the idea of working on my own schedule, exploring the weird ideas of what life truly is, not answering to anyone, exploring little hobbies on the side (coding, learning languages and just being able to exist in my own time. But if I don't go to college, what would I actually do in that free time? What would do to make a living? I'm on track to graduate with a GPA of 3.8 and have 10 dual enrollment classes under my belt. I'm thinking about taking a gap year, but kind of scared of what my family and others think (even though I know that these are the decisions that I'm going to have to live with later on in life). It's just hard to think about not going to college after taking all those classes and working my butt off to get those grades. At the same time, I don't want to make the wrong decision. All of this is crazy because we are just kids and society puts so much pressure on the younger generation and always bombarded with "what do you want to do after high school?" "do what makes you happy". It's really stressful I'm sorry if this comment was too long. I just need to vent a little. Honestly, I could talk about this for hours, but I'm not trying to bore anyone 😅 Thank you for reading this, and if you have any input, I'd appreciate it :)

Hi Tony! I completely understand how you'd feel like not going to college would be a waste of your hard work. That was something I really struggled with as well. However, I'm definitely not advising you to skip college either. In my case, I had a firm idea of what I wanted to pursue as well as a general sense of where my income would come from, so although it was murky water, I still had a direction and goal to work toward. At the end of the day this is your decision and a matter of balancing personal happiness with your relationship to your family. I don't know your particular situation too well, but if you think a gap year would allow you time to build confidence in what path to take, that might be a good option for you. You'd have the opportunity to see if your interest in the medical field fades or not and would also have the chance to explore how you'd earn income and spend your time if you chose a path without college. Best of luck on your journey! You'll get through this :)

Hello! I'm a junior in high school and you are such a big inspiration for me! I can relate to absolutely soooo many of the things you've mentioned in this video! I'd never been serious about school in the past until my 1st semester of Junior year. During that semester I worked so hard and got straight As for the first time, I was so dedicated to school, and I was also all about going to college too. However it's 2nd semester now and overtime I've realized constantly that maybe school and college, and living that life, experiencing all that, isn't for me! In fact, I too, just a few weeks ago, also wanted so bad to be an entrepreneur! I didn't want to go to college, and I too knew that you can a successful entrepreneur without college, and yes, the idea of not going to college scared me too! Especially when it came to how I thought I would tell my parents about it. So now watching your video, I'm so glad that I now understand that I'm not alone! Although now, I don't feel as passionate about being an entrepreneur, what I do know for sure is that I'm not going to college, that I don't want to go to college. I really believe that it isn't the path for me. Though I now am unsure of what to do with my life. I'm thinking of moving to Europe, I just want to escape to be honest, from this sort of life, this whole thing, I want to be free. I want to move to Europe and live by myself, I know that I'll be much happier taking another path then the traditional old school sort of path regarding college and careers. I'm still pondering on what jobs I could do though so that I can be able to have enough money to pay for my living expenses...

oh my god. we are in the exact same position. in england we start college at the age of 16, and of course I applied for biology chemistry and maths because I wanted to do the "best" and hardest subjects since I also wanted to go into the medical field and become a doctor. half way through my first year I realised I wasn't like my classmates, I was failing and I had no true passion for science. everything was falling apart and I literally didn't know what to do anymore. I also turned to writing (I've been writing stories and poetry since I was 12, and my biggest dream since the age of 7 was to become an author) anyway, my grades completely fell apart and due to covid-19 my final exams were cancelled so I was stuck with my teacher predicted grades. now I'm in my gap year but I'm studying for my exam resits and it is honestly so depressing. just thinking about studying maths and science for one more year is literally making me depressed but I don't know what else to do, I have no other choice but to go to university since I don't really have any back up plans (I don't have any creative projects or business plans) so for me university is honestly my only option, even though I truly hate school. I thought I loved it since I was an A grade student in secondary school and I spent most of my time at home just studying or reading since I had no social skills so I hardly spent time with my friends (I still have no social skills

I have just started high school and I have already decided not to go to college directly after high school. I have always loved writing because of the perennial joy in storytelling. I have written first drafts of novels when I was younger and I am currently working on a novel that I am so proud of and I am confident that it can be published. I have already won a few writing awards and I have secured publications for my short stories and poems. I feel I have found the passion bequeathed within me. I don’t need a Creative Writing degree to become an author and I certainly will not study English Literature. I have never been interested in math or science, but I love English, History, and Languages. I may study in college at some point, but I want to merely focus on a high school education for now. I want to be traditionally published, and I know a few literary agents and publishers I would like to submit to. You are an author and you are also an entrepreneur. You have a hybrid publishing company, Lost Island Press. I have already read Leaving Wishville and your writing style is quite similar to my own. I don’t write magical realism anymore; I write literary fiction. I feel like I have started working towards my dreams from a young age and I may not need a college degree to be successful because I am so close to establishing a career as an author and I will hopefully soon have a book published.

So lockdown came and I wa powerless to change it. However I ended up really loving it this year and I found my love for drama, however part of me still wishes I would have done things differently that night. I dont know what to do really, my friends say I wont be successful and I cant and wont because I'm not doing business like them. My story isnt a college one but still one I wanted to share, because people can learn from it. :))

Hey Mel so are you taking a gap year or are you completely gonna take off and start your business? Either way that's a really cool option that I'm glad you took, I know a lot of people who blindly go into college for the glory of pursuing STEM or some other tough major/career, but what if you're meant for something better with a different route you know? So I'm really glad you took the time to re-evaluate your decision! I'm personally in college and I can tell you you really don't get that much real-life experience and stuff unless you apply for it outside of school which is another extra thing to take on in addition to take on. So don't feel bad about your decision, and anyways, worst case scenario you didn't do as much as you wanted to this year, you can probably still head to college in a year (if I understood you correctly)! And I was pretty intrigued by your comment about voice acting, how did you get into it, I've really wanted to try it for a while actually!

I'm diving right in!! I know that I can always change my mind in the future and go back to college, but I'm not planning to. And YES YES YES...there's a trend of students chasing challenge and status over what they are naturally drawn towards. For voice acting I bought a $40 microphone, recorded a demo reel, and posted a gig on Fiverr (pretty much the only Freelance option for minors). It took a while to receive my first order but after that the orders and reviews came in rather quickly.

This is really interesting, because I myself was a good student, but chose not to go to college for the same reason. I knew that the idea of juggling college life and real life was not something I found appealing. Also, I don't actually need a degree to be a software developer. One of the things to make sure you do is RESEARCH. Don't waste years trying to go into a field, even a highly praised one, because it sounds important or "fancy". What matters is that you understand what that career really entails or demands (you can do this by asking people who have experience in that field), and then build the skills for the job you know you are meant for. There was a person my dad knew who decided to be a marine biologist, expecting some sort of glamorous experience that was promised to her, and it didn't take long for her to realize it wasn't for her. True that every job is a job. But know your job before you sign.

Loved hearing your perspective! I’m still on the fence about college myself. I intended to go to a school out of state and study English. But recently i learned I’m seriously interested in digital media and since I want to start and online based business it made more sense for me and it costs a fraction and of the price to study from home over going out of state. However, I live with a lot of people and don’t know how realistic school at home really is. But I know I could use the money I would have spent on school out of state could be put towards my business instead 🤔

I jumped on it too early and didn't know what I was doing or what I wanted out of those 2 years I initially planned to study there. Hi Mel! Hope you are ok. Usually I don't tend to comment youtube videos, but when I finished yours, I couldn't help but to, because of my similar story. I just finished high school as well and I debated with myself for a very long time about what to do next, because going to college never really was my dream goal, even tho it's something very helpful for those who really want to take a degree on a specific area... but, it is not my case. I don't even know what I want to do next professionally. The only thing I know is that I still feel very guilty with myself for not going to college when everyone else is going, because where I'm from, everyone believes that without a degree you are worthless and by the fact I was probably the typical "studious nerd" of the class I feel like I'm disapointing a lot of people for not going. Because, honestly just the ideia of going, terryfies me a lot, but the ideia of not going just make me feel like I'm completely lost... anyways, I signed for a local internship in something I quite like and I'll start very soon and meanwhile I want to discover more about myself. What my interests are and hobbies that could bring something more to my life as well to others and then I hope to figure out my purpose through my own knowledge accomplishment. Thanks for taking the time to read this long comment. Wish you well. - Inês :)

In 2018, I cleared one of the most competitive exams after school here in India for the admission in an IIT (only 10k people are selected out of around 1.5 million applicants). Couldn't join due to financial issues. Got admission in a local college for 3-year degree and started exploring life outside of my books. I wasn't able to achieve much other than a different perspective on life because I was still working to score decent enough in college. Then Covid happened in march last year and the college being low on infrastructure there wasn't any online classes, just few tests every month. I decided to shut off my focus on studies for the time being and just give the tests without any prep. I applied for a couple of writing internships. Got one and learned. Building my web writing portfolio now. Also cleared the exam for Government Jobs here so I'll have offer letter around the end of 2021. Now, first of all I don't want to go to college for that last semester. As you side I like learning, in fact I'm constantly hungry for knowledge but I'm not a big fan of the social (and boring) aspects of it. After that there's the challange of building sustainable income from writing till the year end because Indian government doesn't allow income from other sources if you are working under it. Let's see how it goes.

I'm on a gap year right now due to COVID and I have so many hobbies that I really love doing, so this year has been amazing. The kind of funny thing though has been discovering I don't love doing certain hobbies constantly whereas there are some that I love even when I hate them, if that makes sense, like writing. I did well all-round in school so I could have picked anything really, but I LOVE foreign languages. I just love them. So I want to go into higher education to study in-depth. I admittedly haven't thought loads about what I'd do if I didn't go to college (or uni, in the UK), but for me, that's because I would be so, so gutted to not study foreign languages in massive detail. I could just go and live in foreign countries to learn languages, but then I'd miss out on learning the grammar (which I love, it's one of my favourite parts) and I wouldn't get a qualification that would allow me to be a foreign languages teacher which is likely where I'll end up. But I'm open to anything - language graduates are in increasing demand, meaning I could be a overseas sales person for any company that needs it, or a translator/interpreter for a company, or I could get a job at GCHQ (a.k.a. be a sort-of spy) or I could work anywhere around the world doing environmental conservation work. And I intend to write alongside whatever I do. Basically, what I'd add is **you should only go to college/uni because you undyingly love your subject AND it's a really great option for your career** (e.g. photography graduates don't have loads of choices with a degree, but loads of debt :( ). **If you don't love it, why** spend all that money/time/effort?! There are courses that are far, far cheaper that can teach you all you need to know. Or you can try an apprenticeship. Or you can get in at the bottom of a massive company and work your way up. Networking is way more important in getting jobs that people realise. Do what you love as a job, or do it alongside another job. :)

For me, I never enjoyed school or studying. My GPA has always been about 3.25 on average (and that's me not studying) Because I never study (unless it was for a test or exam, but then again I'd only spend a very short amount of time studying). This year I'm going to eleventh grade and I picked mostly all the hard courses which I am super nervous for, I know in myself that if I do put in the time to study and the effort that I will get good grades. I believe in that. But is it something I enjoy? No it isn't. And also I don't trust myself when it comes to school. I always believe that I am wrong in many things or that I'm a failure if I make a few mistakes. But anyway the only things I'm really passionate about are writing, baking+cooking, and art. I'm not sure what my future career options might be but I'm hoping to see what comes to me in the future. My biggest goal right now is to really focus on getting good grades (even though I don't enjoy anything about school) but I'm forcing myself which is exhausting. I'm also graduating early! I'm about 90% sure that I'm not going to collage, at least not soon. As my dad says, there's no age limit, and there's nothing wrong with going once you're an adult. If in a few years I still feel like I need it, then I would definitely consider, but I want to see what I can do on my own first. I want to start a small business and be a freelancer and an author. I want to travel the world and learn at conferences and online. Because I'm homeschooled, not going to college has always been just as viable an option as not going - mentally, at least. My younger brother wants to go to college though, he's always loved building and tech and he flies drones professionally, so he's considering getting some sort of STEM degree. I find the college debate interesting, and I've been back and forth on my choice a bit, but I've come to the realization that it's actually not as big a deal as it can feel like it is. College is only four years, and you can do those years whenever you like, or not at all.

In Ecuador is also hard go to college if u don’t have enough money to afford. In all my school life I was a really good student, to sum I graduated with 9.20 this year. I really want to go to college because it is one of my dreams and also because living in Latin America is so hard if u do not graduate of college. I said to my mother I would like to have the time until I begin the college to write a lot but I have to do an exam for public colleges (I really don’t need but my father insists to do it) and also reading a lot for obtain a scholarship for the university I want. So I really want all my college issues resolve asap for have time to write 😭😭😭

It is so inspiring to see people like u. Well everybody knows that American education is better than anywhere else which is why I am trynna take the SAT test. I get 1300+ in trials , although I mean I have never been social and u can't find any internship programs or things for extracurriculars. It is just limited resources here and our income isn't sufficient for the American colleges. I don't want u to say that you don't need to go to college to be experienced and have all the people around u that u care about. I am asking for a video that could help international students get their way through this journey or something helpful for us. You are so lucky tho even if you dropped out at this stage cuz of your knowledge and everything else. Thanks for the video gave me a little bit of understanding about this process and finding yourself. I might have messed it up or sounded silly or something just forget the mistakes I did. I hope you will find my comment.

Hi! A close friend of mine has struggled with the same problem. My advice is to stress over it as little as possible. It’s not uncommon. Spend time trying new things and experimenting with hobbies to find something that sparks your interest. Talent isn’t that important either. Search for what you enjoy, not what you’re good at, and with time you’ll improve your skills.

The only thing you are missing is 60 to 250k dollars of debt and a piece of paper which doesn't guarantee a job so good for you however, should you change your mind someday it is never late to go. Your 20s are about figuring who you are anway. Enjoy!

I wouldn’t have advised one or the other. I would’ve said, take 1-2 years off and see how you feel without going to college and doing what you like for that time. And then decide whether to go to college or not.

Wow things like these pop up in students!!!??? Damn Indians don't really get that..... I guess the society we live in influences our thoughts and I seriously never thought about this all I know was I am good at whatever I pick up (that includes science) so even before me having a conversation with my parents I just realised let's make the application form or the resume beautiful with a few degrees and meanwhile work ur ass out on ur skill which u wanna excell in and when u can stand on ur feet go for whatever you want to because this is the more safe way rather than risking the way you did...... It's just that we don't get a lot of chance to think about ourselves and so we never get into this dilemma of making such a decision at a very young age..... I've turned 18 recently and I am gonna get the IIT and develop my skill in entrepreneurship and music and after I am done I'll go see the world ......but u did a brave decision all the best
