I just bought a Wimm Mini and a Schiit Modi on your recommendation. The Modi made a big difference vs using the DAC in my 22 year old Denon. I noticed a difference with speakers, but a huge difference with headphones. And neither one broke the bank. Thank you for answering our questions. Loudness “contour” control was as attempt to reflect Fletcher Munson curves to compensate for human hearing’s nonlinearity. For my money, the best implementation of this protocol in mainstream consumer audio components was by Yamaha, back in the early ‘70s. IIRC, it could be cascaded with either the internal tone controls and filters, or even an external EQ such as Soundscraftsman, SAE, etc used in one of the amp or receiver’s tape monitor loops. The variable compensation essentially eliminated issues with the wide range of loudspeaker sensitivity between the popular speakers likely to be found in the audio salon showrooms of the day. “What’s an audio salon? “ Well, kids let old gramps tell ya story …. 😂 In my over 60 years addicted to audio, the short list of my regretful disposals would have definitely have included the CA1000 and CR1000, and maybe the Spica SC50is

I use a firestick 4k max, connected directly to my AVR to stream amazon HD music. It works pretty well, and even does Atmos music after a fairly recent update. The only real issue I have with it is that the recording level on atmos track is super low. I mean, I have to raise the volume by 10 db on atmos tracks vs HD/UHD. It does do bit perfect all the way up to 24/192. I do suffer from FOMO with it though, wondering if I'm missing out because the dac is maybe not that great. How good could a dac be that fits on a firestick?

The Wiim pro has been amazing for me. I do use an external dac though (SMSL Su-6). One thing I miss on it are the playlists tidal creates specifically for me, such as daily discovery and mix 1, mix 2 etc. I can use the chromecast function to get that though, so no big deal. Wouldve just prefered to have it in the app though. But at least I don't need my pc on for music now! Great device.

Sorbothane pucks and feet are worth their weight in gold for isolating a turntable. Weigh your turntable and buy the correct “Duro” and size. Sorbothane fixed my table from skipping when my kids dance in the same room.

Auris is a good one for streaming on vintage gear. BluMe, BluMe Pro and Audifi are the three they offer. I jave 3 of the Audifi and enjoy them. I am out in the sticks and have no land line internet so only off my phones for me. The Audify offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and has a subwoofer out and I like the dac that is in it actually! Just my 2 cents. Good info in the video.

Would a good “vintage streamer option” be something like one of your old vids “the best streamer isn’t a streamer”? In that vid I think you were suggesting a cheaper Bluetooth receiver and your phone. I was thinking maybe use your phone and a cheap usb or Apple dongle and a headphone to rca cable. Not the best option ever but that’d be around $20 and it’d get you started…

I'm enjoying watching your videos. Unlike others who I swear paid to do the reviews.. only because if you have companies like Klipsch Benco car audio and BMW sending you equipment to review. Assuredly they truly feel obligated to give those companies find reviews no matter what.. I would say truthfully that the grand majority of everyone who likes rock simply could never afford to spend the sort of monies that some companies are asking for their equipment it's ridiculous. I've been subscribed since pretty much the beginning. I have seen changes in the channel since the beginning. Things that happen once a youtuber get some success. The communication and accessibly start to wane. You don't return messages or reply to comments much. You get "popularly distanced". It happens I guess. Some of it comes off a bit dismissive. Also I think when you started you were more "this is my opinion, your mileage may vary" to now the more experienced "this is the way it is". Again pretty common in this forum. I still appreciate anyone that looks for gear for everyone, not just upscale stuff. I'm still a watcher...

I’ve got to assume that a lot of his changes you speak of come from an increase in confidence and just practicing and refining the process, I dunno. But I have to agree on the most selfish point that accessibility to him does go down to some degree. We hung out quite a bit at axpona last year and I’m definitely worried that he’s gonna be severely more distracted by fans and such this year. Regardless I’m still super happy to see how far he’s come and hope nothing but the best for the channel and his sanity in general.

I’ve got an ikea fubar over in the other corner of my room . . . from the rack I’ve got my system on . . . the fubar is wood ~ I’m not really sure why I got it. The wire rack I’ve got my system on ~ those are better because the crabs don’t like running on them. I knew trapezo likes to get on and into the wood . . . nonetheless it’s not bad here. There’s so much DDT dumped off the headland here ~ it’s not really a problem . . .

I can't hear any sound quality difference between streaming tidal from the wiim mini or the tidal app on my roku. Both are optical in a Geshelli J2. The roku tidal app doesn't have all the features of the tidal direct app

We live in a time of plus-side-minus-side as audiophiles: On the plus-side, it's harder than ever to mess up an audio purchase. You could buy a pair of speakers strictly on review praise, and a DAC-amp strictly on review praise, and hook your computer to the amp, and it ... would sound good enough that you could at least *decide* not to notice the shortcomings. That hasn't always been true in this hobby: It wasn't that long ago that you could buy $1000 worth of stuff and literally not be able to listen to it. But the minus-side is that, as a direct result, the whole idea of a giant-killer is pretty much out the window, too -- and people (other than Tarun) aren't talking about that part. If a $1000 combo rig can't sound bad anymore, that also means that a $400 combo rig can't be realistically expected to beat it. The hidden facet of this new reality is that bundled solutions (be they DAC-amps, powered speakers, etc) are in my opinion a much better value now, because you won't hear the limitations of one part of the chain when you're buying from a manufacturer who was careful to match things before putting them in the same box. So this got long, but I think that the more predictable linearity of price-to-performance has (somewhat paradoxically) ushered a much more attractive market for combos.

Seems others are getting into the sub-$500 Streamer/DAC market. Maybe you could review the new ones by Cambridge Audio and NAD one day, their sound quality and their apps ease (or lack thereof) use. Do they offer as good a sound as the Bluesound Node?

When it comes to eat use an adjustment levels an absolute finest option would make sure to be a parametric EQ it least 3 bands so that you may have millions of free-floating choices, Sony made some wonderful stuff a while ago that incorporated parametric EQ with the big advantage of preamp outputs so that you could record the audio that you heard on to whatever Source you choose

Under that IKEA cutting board, use 4 Sorbothane discs. I had to do this to keep bass feedback into my turntable.

What do recording engineers and producers use, I doubt it is the stuff you are suggesting! Studio monitors are not expensive but they are in a great room in most cases! Come on man do justice to audio, and teach setup and room acoustics

Dishonest? I wouldn't say so. A difference of opinion? Of course. My opinion is that if the speaker won't rattle my windows without falling apart (ie. LS50), it isn't good. To me, even a speaker with dual 6.5 woofers isn't good. It can make some base, but not loud, natural, effortless bass down to 25 hz.

Without a subwoofer most speakers struggle to come even close to 25hz, why would you imagine a bookshelf speaker would.

@@C4nnonF0dder I wouldn't consider most bookshelf speakers "great." Maybe my subs are too small (10") but they don't sound natural either. I'm running quad 15"s and that sounds the best so far. I don't allocate much of my budget to audio but I imagine there are good speakers out there. Maybe the Tekton Double Impact would tickle my fancy.

dood don’t ever listen to detractors. you have to remember that the people who like what you do are less likely to say anything. negative people need attention. if you were a shill or not doing a good job your channel growth would reflect. but it doesn’t. you have an amazing community
