We call salmon Kahawai here in NZ. Means 'strong in the water'. They put up a great scrap on light gear which is why I fly fish for them. If they grew any bigger it's all anyone would fish for. They also make great fish tacos - roll the skinned fillet in crushed up tortilla chips before shallow frying and serving in a tortilla.

Hey Roger, what kind of sinker do you use for your live mullet?
@Pomatomus.Saltatrix
@Pomatomus.Saltatrix Жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, I really enjoyed your latest video! I've noticed in your vlogs that you often use Australian salmon as deadbait to try for mulloway. I was curious about your decision not to use the salmon as live bait in this specific situation. Considering the proximity of the hole to the shore, it seemed like a logical choice to release the live bait directly into the hole without casting even having to cast it out. It also seemed likely that a large mulloway would be attracted to and devour the salmon. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Do Australian mulloway not typically consume salmon? Should be the same story for any size of tailor. Please let us know Greetings from P. Saltatrix!

Hi Roger, assuming you salt the pilchard before use, as I find they turn to mush after 20 minutes and cannot use them.
@RogerOsborneFishing

Hi Original, I actually never salt my pilchards. After I buy them, I leave the block in my freezer and just take what I need for each trip. If I have some that I take home after fishing I freeze them for berley.

Wery instructive every one of your vids, excellent as always, but there’s one secret you seem to be reluctant to share with us. How do you avoid those pesky crabs stealing your bait even before the sinker hits the bottom? At a promising hole next to a rocky outcrop at Gunnamatta at rising tide but after 2 hour packing up very desappointed when a group of friendly fishous approached. Were not impressed with my two quite big sandcrabs tangled in a ball of (mine) line. They always bag out, they said. They do come there to target them, not the fish. Next time will go there better prepared for them as well.
@RogerOsborneFishing
@RogerOsborneFishing Жыл бұрын
Don't be bothered about Sand Crabs Steve, they are on most beaches but normally don't cause much trouble, try using them for bait.

Thanks Roger. I've got braid on my reel and nearly slice my finger off casting the star sinkers if I dont tighten the drag before the cast. Short of using a casting trigger do you have any advice on a better way? Cheers, Brad.
@RogerOsborneFishing

Putting in a big cast off the beach with heavier braid you really need some sort of thin glove to protect your finger. I have cut myself a few times because I am used to using mono. Otherwise just use mono
